    Vast majority of the names on this list are swimmers and gymnasts for obvious reasons. Number of medals is not the only indicator of greatness. Imagine all the sports that there is only 1 gold opportunity and even if you win golds in 5 consecutive Olympics, you won’t make it to this list.

      What is it with people and putting limitations and making finite statements on sporting records and achievements?
      There is a much higher chance of Phelps' record being broken than not because the future is both infinite and progressive, while the achievements of the past were achieved in a rather minute time period with limited resources.

    Mark Spitz is one of the GOATs of swimming many don’t know about. He retired at the age of 22, after participating in two Olympics and winning a total of 11 medals (in the 1972 games, he swam in 7 events and won 7 gold medals while setting 7 world records). If he had stayed in swimming as an amateur, and swam in another 2-3 Olympics (although he would not have been in the 1980 games as the US boycotted them that year), he likely would have been in the same rare air as Phelps.

    • @djo-dji6018
      @djo-dji6018 Месяц назад +5

      No, you are mistaken. In the 1970s a 22-year-old swimmer was already a 'mature' swimmer with relatively low chances of further improvement, so Spitz could have at most tried to qualify for the 1976 Olympics, but with no guarantees of winning individual medals. Roland Matthes, another legendary swimmer from Germany, actually competed at Montreal Olympics in 1976 at the age of 26yo and was regarded as a unusual case of longevity at that level! I was a swimmer in the 1980s, and in that decade a 25-yo swimmer was still regarded as 'old'. So no, Spitz would have had no chances to get much closer to Phelps' medals record.

    • @Mik-xq2co
      @Mik-xq2co Месяц назад

      @@djo-dji6018 I would not agree that 22 years of age constituted a "mature" swimmer with low chances of continuing to improve as they age. A male peaks physically at around the age of between the late 20s and early 30s. Given this, there is no reason to think that Spitz would not have continued to improve if he had dedicated his next 8--12 years to being a world class swimmer.
      What has changed is how today's athletes can support themselves financially while dedicating their full time to their sport. Both in terms of money provided by the government and outside commercial/NIL financial deals, today's athletes can profit and support themselves; this is especially true for high profile sports like swimming, track and gymnastics. This was not true 3-plus decades ago, when athletes had to be true "amateurs" and had little to no way to profit off of their names and image. This meant most athletes would compete in one or maybe two Olympics and then transition to college or a job to provide a living for themselves and their families. This was true of both Spitz, which meant he basically retired at the age of 22 so that he could make a living off of his past accomplishments. IF he had stayed in competitive swimming, there is no reason to think that he did not have at least another 2-3 Olympics in him, which would have likely put him north of a total of 20 total medals. It's not like the human body ages more slowly now vs 40 years ago, but rather many top athletes would retire to pursue making a better financial life for themselves.
      I can't really comment on Roland Matthes (he was a backstroke specialist and an all-time great in this swimming stroke) as his situation was different than Spitz, being an East German and likely having more financial support from the government?? It seems he retired after three Olympics at an age of 26 or 27 to pursue a medical degree and eventually became an orthopedic surgeon.

    Without taking away the brilliance of these athletes, swimming, then gymnastics and then Athletics have multi-events that are similar and have relays. Shooting and fencing is just a change of weapon. I feel this devalues the single event sports where the option to win multiples is zero. In other ords, there are some amazing athletes whose sport does not allow them to compete for five, six, or seven medals at a single olympics. Interesting though.

    Swimming lends itself to racking up medals. There are 21 Olympic swimming races. (Track has 11.) Imagine swimming was only the freestyle at 50/100/200/400/800/1600m, two freestyle relays (50/100), 50/100m backstroke, and 50m butterfly. No one wins eight golds in a single program.
    It is also important to note that it was really Phelps’ longevity was most amazing, as opposed to his winning multiple events in one Olympics. Mark Spitz won 11 Olympic medals (9 gold) over two Olympics. After seven golds in ‘72 his subsequent endorsements paid him the modern day equivalent of $70m. He retired at just 22 years old. If he races in 76, at just 26 years old he very well could have won another seven.
    (There is also a physics component to swimming which allows an athlete to be competitive at the 100/200/400m, which are equivalent, via time, to 400/800/1500 in track. No one runs Olympic level 400/800/1500 in the same body. The muscle mass requirements vary too greatly where in swimming buoyancy mitigates that concern.)

    He was severely injured in the first round of the 1956 horse jumping competition, but did not want to let his teammates down for their chance to win the team competition and started heavily on painkillers, almost sedated, to the second round. He could barely control his horse Halla, but the brave horse carried him home, winning both the team and individual gold medal.

      For those women that have more medals than her, well gymnastics was different back then.
      The equipment was different. The technique was different. The culture was different (though frighteningly, still the same in some ways). The entire sport had less difficult elements that allowed women (yes, women, not girls) to continue for longer into their 20s and even 30s. For 2 or even 3 Olympic games. That gave them a chance to win more medals.
      Today, the sport is different. It’s more popular, so there are more people, especially girls, coming through and replacing the previous generation. The sport has equipment that demands incredibly higher levels of difficulty, which means that physical and mental burnout makes it harder for gymnasts to remain competitive at the Olympic level for a long period of time. The fact that Simone has remained dominant from 2013 to now is equivalent to if Michael Phelps were absolutely undefeatable for somewhat 25 years.
      Back then the apparatuses were more….not similar, but at the same time, there wasn’t anything much different between their specialists, and people were able to be good in the all around, rather than now when the different apparatuses take such a different approach that it is hard for a gymnast to be contending not only for world finals, but for world medals on two events, much less all 4. Simone has world medals and a consistent world class level on all 4 apparatuses.
      (Take a look at the lineup of the uneven bars final, then at the beam final, and look at their physiques, the average height. See some differences? Yeah. That wouldn’t have been there in the 60s)
      Simone has pushed the sport to new levels technically, reached technical levels that nobody else has dared to touch before, and done it with such consistency and execution that has put her at the top of world gymnastics for the past 8 years. We are very grateful to live in the era of Simone Biles, the gymnast who has arguably the greatest impact on the sport in history.
      And with eight Olympic medals and 30 World Championship medals, she is the most decorated gymnast in history. In today's era, that is much more impressive given that the level of competition is much higher. That is why she is widely considered the greatest gymnast in history.
