I cant believe you would blame the cows on going under a fence or even jumping or going threw one. 😂🤣😊. I blame it on the fence trolls 😂😁. Everyone sure seems to be happy. Heres hoping yall have a good rest of your week and a very happy weekend.
I just realized(after you said it) that we ride the fences clockwise too. Maybe it’s an old cowboy habit since we mount and dismount from that side as well when we pack out to check fences. Found some humor in that, thanks.
It’s like that Chris Ledoux song “ well the caveings all done and the branding through .haying won’t start for another week or two, there’s only one thing left to do is time to celebrate
Very interesting, Mike! Your situation is so different from ours here in Alabama. It's common to get 3-5 cuttings of hay, providing weather cooperates, and not uncommon to see unused hay bales sitting, spoiling on field edges because it just wasn't needed. Our growing season is LONG and keeping grazing livestock fed is just not a problem. 5,000 acres is a lot of land, but you need every bit of it! I always enjoy!
Mike and Erin, I love all that you do. Thank you for sharing with us. You are always so positive and even natured. I don't understand why anyone can give a thumbs down! Especially on Mackenzie's father day post! They must be very sad people! 😕
Mike - "There's still one very important thing to think about, and that's how long they'll be allowed to live..." Me - "That's kind of dark" Mike - "...in this pasture." Me - "oh"
I'm amazed at how much you had to learn, when you came to ranch life! Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us. Your videos are always interesting.
Mike great video. Those 🐄 living good on that beautiful Ranch I love it. A lot of responsibility on the Ranch. Hope you had a blessed Father Day ❣️ Enjoy your evening Mike
Hi again! Great vid Mike. You've learned the cattle checklist well! Happy you made it through branding. Watched the whole event and relieved you had some help. Noticing alot of time could be saved and eliminate the frustration if you had a cow dog or two to help with sorting or containment or a couple cowy horses and riders that could help you out. I know you spoke once about a dog for a pet but maybe you could find one to cover both those bases. Just that adjustment can make such a difference. All the cattle looked really good after winter so they're off to a good start on pasture. Always thought those tub licks were such a great invention! Now you can ride all the fence and take advantage of blowing away some stress and enjoying the pastures when you're not fixing the never ending job of fence fixing. Shifting gears into a new season will give all kinds of possibilities for new vids. Can hardly wait to see what you get into Mike! Thx as always for sharing. As I told Mackenzie on Father's Day you both are blessed to have each other! What a special gift for you Dad and I could tell she was so tickled to do it. Happy she shared it too! Thx
As I watched the cow walk away from you I recalled that In 1970 I was working on a ranch in Lusk with a couple pals from high school. The Rancher's mother and father had homesteaded the property in the early 1900's, the Rancher had trained his cows to come when he called them. Every time we'd drive into a pasture to bring them anything to eat, especially salt; he would yell "calf, ,,,calf,,,,, calf; and darned if all the cows didn't come running! They'd still come running even when we brought them nothing. Strangest thing I had ever seen. I thought you could only call a dog.
Hi Mike, looks like things are going out there! The Dr just came in I was supposed to be in here 3 days and that was 4 days ago. I guess things don't go as well when you get older that including pain or am I buying his second house in Canada. Can't wait to get out. THANK YOU for the videos!!!!!!!
Amazing how different ranches in Wyoming are only 100 miles away. Where I am from the altitude is higher, the ranches larger, and there is no hay ground. Thanks for telling your story.
Beautiful video Mike we appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us and can't wait for them next few videos showing fixing dents with new technology in Old technology I remember doing it in New Mexico is a kid watching my dad do it with old technology so that'll be interesting have a great rest of the week
I'm retired and have been considering getting into a small farm/ranch just because I have always admired the lifestyle. After watching this video I am feeling overwhelmed and thinking it's out of my league. First of all there's no way I could ever afford 5000 acres. I might be able to afford 50 acres. Anyway, I sure did enjoy the video, and am happy for you and your family ...
@@OurWyomingLife , I know all about trees falling on fence, that's what I'm saying u don't have to worried about trees falling on fence at least the part u show us. Thanks for replying and I enjoyed you and your family y'all's Wyoming life thank your daughter for father's day. Y'all folks take care good .
Have you ever tried to grow a millet variety to grow forage for the cows? It does good in droughty conditions compared to alfalfa. It’s cheaper to grow than buying hay that’s for sure.
Great video very interesting and inspirational to me as I want to buy some property and homestead . Love your content and your voice is very great I can listen to you all day ! Keep up the great videos man ! Stay safe out there working hard .
Why do you not drill holes in the bottom of barrels that hold your salt/cobalt licks? Doesn't water help dissolve them faster? NOT a critique -- a genuine question. As always, LOVE your videos!
💪 Video Mike!!! I didnt know about the salt blocks. And what happens to the black barrels with the supplements when it rains? Cant wait for the next Video... 🤠
Thanks Washingtons Global, when it rains we do get a bit of dissolving. The the water evaporates and the bottom of the barrel has the leftover minerals- Mike
We have used lick tubs before but we found out our cattle get too lose at there back end if you were wundering what I meant..lol inerways so when I gone out to feed them I only give it to them like every three days or so, then take it back out. Tell the next three days or so. Seemed to help them of not getting lose cuz I always was told if the animals are getting too lose! They are wasting protein and for you as well for giving it to them. So It's either the one or another which makes sense inerways form what their eating or licking but im just curious do you fertilize and lime your pastures to help on the grass growth cuz I was about to say that might would help for your cows stay on grass longer by weather permitting inerways good video.👍 sir.
I don’t figure any of this information will ever be used by me. BUT, I sure do enjoy learning about my food. You do a great job sharing what you do. I appreciate it very much. Thank you.
When you put salt and cobalt blocks out in those barrels, do you open a bung on the bottom for rain (if it happens) drain out, or do you want water to be held in them so they dissolve some?
Fullcircle Homestead with the amount of rain we get its not worth bothering with. Besides the cows will beat up the barrels and we get a few new ones every year- Mike
Why is the hay you buy better? How could you make yours better.? Do you have elect fence?I should have waited. Should have known you would answer my questions. I love your channel. So educating.
Hey Mike, I never noticed this White, tall, posts behind you before. Are those just power poles for the oil Wells? Do you have holes in the bottom of the barrels that have the blocks in them, or do they dissolve in rain water?
Hey Grant, Thats all they are electric poles for the well. As far as the barrels the salt and mineral does disolve a bit, but the water evaporates fairly fast so the lose of product is minimal. Thanks- Mike
Like I think you need to look into hay feeders they hold like 4 to 8 bales and they cut down on waste everybody here that uses them say it cut there usage down by up to half what they were using
Which of your videos would you recommend for someone looking to start ranching? Really looking to start in the next few years and would love the advice. Thanks!
I wish you would have gone over mineral placement. And why you want to place mineral in certain places versus other places although I guess it is a little more important on Forest Service land that I manage then it is in your own personal pastor.
Hey ground I think it’s more important because if you don’t have much hey for the winter like you said Mike hey isn’t cheep....opening for gate is very important also!..fun video!
In my view you should either turn it all to pasture and buy all your hay or (if you're losing money when you buy hay) you should cut back on cows/pasture and make more hay so you rarely buy it.
Since you pay 40 dollars per ton for your hay verses 185. Dollars and you seem to get an average of half your winter hay I would think at least you would want to add at least 200 acres of hay. Luca
Hey Mike, have you ever tried using a horn to call the cattle to you? I've seen RUclips video's where some guy or a young girl with a squeeze box started to play a tune, and the cattle came running! We they trained or just inquisitive? Don't know, but they sure were responsive.

I never knew that raising cattle was such a science . I have learned a lot since I been watching your videos
Todd, thanks for watching. Glad we can share the knowledge. Mike
Love the Duluth Minnesota T-shirt my neck of the woods
Thanks TJ- Mike
im so glad your talking about the minerals so many have no clue what it takes n just think oh they eat grass n thats it.
You just have to love cows......they can smell an open gate they are not supposed to go through😂😂😂😂😂
They sure can smell an open gate! Mike
I just realized(after you said it) that we ride the fences clockwise too. Maybe it’s an old cowboy habit since we mount and dismount from that side as well when we pack out to check fences. Found some humor in that, thanks.

Thank you Garry. We dont try to figure out the "Thumbs down" anymore. Mackenzie made us so proud! Thanks Mike
I just realized I keep the fence to my left also I never really thought about it until u said it
if you drive a truck or the gator, you have to get out on the left, so you keep the fence on that side, most likely mount the atv the same way
Or a 4 wheeler, the throttle is typically on the right, easier to turn the shoulders to the left, away from the throttle arm, than look across it.

Mike, y'all have a beautiful ranch, 5000 acres......that's a lot of land to keep up with.
Thank you Sandy. Mike
U right
I understand the fence is only a suggestion. Dad always had cows and on occasion they would get out. We always kept busy bailing hay or something.
Always something to do isnt there? Thanks for watching Mike
@@OurWyomingLife ya and I had 4 brothers.

Cows are funny.
was in Gillette on Wednesday, your country is pretty green this year.
I notice u don't have to worried about any trees falling over your fence. That's a good thing.
😂 true
LOL No trees, but ya see birds every so often!
One less thing to worry about! Thanks Mike
@@mattfencl3614 knowing you- you've probably wondered where the wood fence posts came from and where the birds nest at! LOL- Mike

Matt Phillips Branding went very well. You too- Mike
In Ireland we could keep 150 Cowes on 250 Acres including hay ground
Conor our stocking rates are a little different here in Wyoming.
You have plenty of rain...and EU subsidies.
Wyoming is a mile higher, gets less than 1/3 the rain, and it's winter blows down from the arctic instead of up from gulf of Mexico.

I usually do. Just didn't have a drill with me. Need to get one and go down. Thanks - Mike
both very important
Mike you mentioned rotational grazing does not work for you. Why is that? Would love to know. Thank you.

Do you ever bush hog the old pasture to knock down the bushes and the stuff the cows don't eat, or is it to much work with little return?
Man, I thought my 60 acres was big lol. 5,000 acres---you have some serious land.

Larry, I think its just an conditioned response. The cows here a song or someones voice and associate with getting fed. Mike
After you hay The field do you allow the cattle to graze the hay field
do a video about that slow old pumpjack...
What flatbed do you have on your truck? Great lookin ranch truck!
5 thousand acres damn I wish that must of been 💰💰

Do you treat your posts with chemical to prevent rot and termites? Or do they come pre treated?
