    A battery explosion is a cop out. As soon as water hits the battery, they blow up. It's like someone's cause of death being that their heart stopped beating.

      A Submarine Battery expels large amounts of Hydrogen and Oxygen while charging or discharging. Prior to WWII, battery explosions were the leading cause of loss of life. It was also the reason of the Argentine Submarine, SAN JUAN a few years ago.

    I think the acoustic data would have found more evidence of ships in the area if the Soviets had attacked Scorpion. Furthermore, as more details of the K129 have come to light, it's clear that the US had no reason to sink the vessel, but rather took advantage of catastrophic mechanical failure to gain intel (albeit outdated). This sort of tit for tat behavior sounds believable in a spy thriller from Tom Clancy, but the incidents of the Cold War tend to reveal, once documents have been declassified, that people tended to blunder into them, rather than being premeditated. My brother in law is a former submarine electrician, and the impression that I got from him is that the Navy knows more than it publicly admits regarding Thresher or Scorpion, and it mostly has to do with their then policies on safety and foolproofing submarines to operate at the depths and environments they were pushing with little to no experience in the 1960s. They were, in a sense, overdriving their lights on a dark night. Simply put, there is a reason why the Navy stopped the half-done refits immediately after Scorpion's loss and that there have been no major incidents save for a couple of collisions since then.

    • @shipwrecksunday
      @shipwrecksunday  3 месяца назад +1

      Totally agree with you! I think it's much more likely to be a mechanical failure than anything else!

      @shipwrecksunday Unfortunately, my former co-worker passed in the late 90's unexpectedly.
      What I remember is from 34 years ago, but what he described is something hard to forget, so I'll share what he told me.
      According to him, Scorpion had a not so good reputation, not from the written material condition of the boat, but what he described as being hyper- aggressive when deployed. The word among the submarine force was to stay away from duty on that boat.
      The theory is she was torpedoed by a ussr submarine, but what he told me is one is one of the ussr task force destroyers Scorpion was playing "cat-and-mouse" with got tired of the games and sunk it.
      Plausible? Or was he maybe making it up? I never shared this story until a couple months ago with another former co-worker and friend who is also a former submariner of the Thresher/Permit class. He's shared with me what's circulates around his fellow submariners.
      IMHO, it's time the navy comes clean to what happened to Scorpion, first and foremost for closure for the families.

      @shipwrecksunday The cold war between the USA and Soviet Union began in 1947 with the Truman Doctrine. It ended in 1991 with the implosion of the Soviet Union. It's inexcusable this cold war secret should stay classified.
      Why?
      Its heartless and cruel that spouses extended family, and in some cases children have passed, never knowing what happened to their loved ones.

    Those patrols in the North of the USSR were very often ELINT operations. They even managed at a point to tap into the Soviet navy phone lines.
    The reason why they start early with the search could have been the SOSUS line. It's a interesting Cold War tool of the NATO.
    1968 was a bad year for subs. Besides the USS Scorpion, the INS Dakar, the French Minerve and the Soviet K-129 sunk in that year. The Minerve was only found 1999, the Dakar 2019. The K-129 wreck has a great story, search for the Hughes Glomar Explorer.

    SERIOUS Competition in covering Aircraft Disasters, but MOST get solved eventually due to the wreckage being more easily accessed/recovered. I HATE unsolved mysteries so carry on explaining (where possible) the reason(s) for Shipwrecks. In Scorpion`s case the USN needs to be more transparent over the cause - what can be SO secret after all this time? Admission of culpability is more commendable than concealment. Q. Scorpion was lost due to poor material condition, and probably poor procedural compliance. She was a victim of a large battery explosion which killed the crew instantly. The ship continued on and exceeded her crush depth when she imploded. John Craven made many wrong and unscientific presumptions on her loss. The best account of all of this by Bruce Rule. The SAG came to conclusion of a battery explosion. The cause was not accepted by the Navy until 2012. But, conspiracy theories still continue. Signed...a 30 year Submarine Veteran.
