  • Skyrim's civil war quest line is one of my personal favorite story lines in The Elder Scrolls 5. However, despite playing through it numerous time before, there are still a handful of hidden details, secrets and Easter eggs that some of us are only now just uncovering for both the Imperials and Stormcloaks. So, whether it's hidden siege equipment, or secret spies - today we'll be taking a look at 5 Skyrim civil war secrets that you may have missed.

    The thing I dislike most about the civil war quest line, although I do like most of it, is there are so few tactics used in the battles,most of the time it is just a senseless charge and brawl.

    • @joshuakim5240
      @joshuakim5240 6 лет назад +68

      The only thing i found nice about those charge-and-brawl battles is that they're the only times where Illusion enhancement spells with splash radius are actually applicable. Did a pacifist support build playthrough (would not recommend unless you REALLY like that playstyle) and Rally and Call to Arms buffing allies in those battles made them surprisingly kickass.

      You can kill the World-Eater, one of the most powerful Vampire Lords, and a dragon priest turned protégé of one of the most powerful Daedric princes. I think the Dragonborn could easily wipe out the entire Aldmeri Dominion.

    • @memz9513
      @memz9513 6 лет назад +127

      Impatiens the Sorry Shmuck Well firstly the only reason you were able to kill alduin is because he isn't at full power. He wasn't eating the world while you were playing, if he was there would be no way you can take him on as he has the blessing of Akatosh. As for the Harkon you have his daughter on your side she is a beast and strong af. And as for Miraak he is the only example that I agree with, defeating him was a pretty big sign of power. However dragonborn are not invincible, Talos the god of man was only able to conquer the dominion after he acquired the numidium. You don't have the numidium, you are not the emperor, even if you were there is no stable empire. I just don't think that the dragonborn has enough power to take on the dominion by himself let alone with the empire.

    • @thewolfpaladin1858
      @thewolfpaladin1858 6 лет назад +73

      MMG Network you also have to include the fact that the Thalmor are not as large as they used to be

    • @memz9513
      @memz9513 6 лет назад +76

      Well yeah, but a small Dominion vs a small Empire (that's getting smaller) or Independent Skyrim (much much smaller) is not going to defeat the former. Even if the Dragonborn sides with them. Here is the problem, there is a very obvious implementation of power fantasy within TESV, however once the game finishes that power isn't as prevalent. What im trying to say is the reason you're unbeatable in Skyrim is because you are playing. The event that take after the game are not defined by the player. So i'd rather take the predictable route rather that the emotional one. I know that if the Dragonborn invaded the dominion within the game, he would accomplish that, within the game. The game hardly ever allows for the Dragonborn to fail. Even in the civil war quest line, if you abandon the battle of Windhelm NPC's (Ulfric Stormcloak) are alerted of your personal failure, he even tells you that you acted cowardly, however the side that you were on still wins. The game does not let you fail. However once out of the game the Protagonist syndrome is over, and the Dragonborn's accomplishments after that are not certain victory. I also know that the dominion is not as powerful as it once was, but consider this, The Empire is fracturing, Hammerfell has gained independence, Skyrim is in civil war, there is a Dragon crisis within Skyrim, Red Mountain has erupted rendering Morrowind Useless, Argonia is acting shady AF, Highrock and Cyrodiil seem to be stable, however the Emperor is arguably dead, The dominion is also weaker than before, and Tamriel is still recovering from the Oblivion crisis (apart from Argonia). All in all the Dominion ( Elsweyr, Valenwood and the Summerset isles) have the upper hand, as well as the treaties of Stros M'kai and the White Gold concordat, the Blades are in hiding the Thalmor are essentially overseeing most of the empire allowing them to infiltrate and delude and confuse the people turning them against one another, no one in Skyrim has any clue of this, the Asset (Ulfric Stormcloak) is blindly playing his role in confronting the Empire, consequentially securing an ample opportunity for the Dominion. So yes the situation is pretty dire.

    Ambarys hasn't been in Skyrim only ''recently'', he came when the Red Mountain erupted, that's 4E 5, some 165 years before the Great War. The Great War, as well as the Umbriel Crisis, and other wars took place post- 4E 5. It's not far fetched to assume that his armor is kept as a reward from his time in the Legion; as that's custom in the Legion, being allowed to keep your armor. No Imperial spy would hold onto Imperial armor, if they'd have it in the first place, as it'd result in being easily recognised as an Imperial.
    Margret is an Imperial spy, no Imperial armor on her, just records of her mission, which is exactly what a spy would have, not a set of armor.

      In elvish terms that wouldn’t be too long ago. Elves have a lifespan of 800 years, so he’s been there for around Maybe 10, almost 11 years for us compared to some of the ones from before that

      Where did you get 800? From what I know, Elves are old when 200 years old, and very old when 300. Most elves older than 300 years prolong their lifespans through magic.

      The Forgotten Hero The Real Barenziah says that elves can naturally live to 1000, but due to disease and conflict don't usually live anywhere near that long. No source really contradicts that claim-- Barenziah herself is one elf who's pretty ancient (she was a teenager when Tiber Septim was conquering Tamriel) and there's no sign she used magic to extend her life.

    If you restore the Boethiah-Quest through a mod, that dialogue is really creepy, if you think about it. They call Boethiah (one of the "darker" Daedric Princes), Oblivion's nobility.... i like to think, that her shrine above the city of Windhelm influences the people. Just think about it: The Lady of deceit, conspiracy, secret plots of murder, assassination, TREASON, and UNLAWFUL OWERTHROW OF AUTHORITY, the Prince of Plots, the Dark Warrior, DECIEVER OF NATIONS... and now compare that with Ulfric and what he did....
    Oh, and before I forget:
    If you sided with the Empire, the guards just say that the Throne of Solitude is cused, because both the High King and the Jarl died only months apart.

    What I like about the Civil War is how much it is connected to the main questline, especially with the caunsil part. If you know you're going to be a Stormcloak, you'll better give every hold to the Empire so that you can conquer all these parts back, making the Civil War that much longer. Make sure you're thane of every hold before giving them away so that you can become thane again, and receiving new reward weapons for it. It's a completionist thing mainly, but one to keep in mind nontheless.

    wouldn't it be amazing to have spin-offs to skyrim, DLC or small game sized?
    like for example playing the story of that elf who used to be an imperial soldier. following him through the adventures he experienced and then finally meet him again in the main game, knowing so much more about this character.

      The Thalmor have their place. In addition to securing foreign law, they are also imposing Thalmor beliefs onto a nation that was already well established. The Thalmor don't seem to be a large enough organization to stand on its own. So honestly, I feel like they'd fall apart eventually. More likely due to a revolt, or if enough folk rose up to revolt.
      Alas. Afraid I must disagree. Every non-Khajit, non-Orc character I play...

    I actually did fight through the necromancer's dungeon before, and I really enjoyed it. I thought her idea to use necromancy to fight a war was genius, for every soldier killed in battle, she would gain another member of her own army. The only problem to this exponential growth of army size would be the maintaining and expanding of the spell.
    She could have brought an era of piece to skyrim. And if I remember right, she was doing a good job at raising a mass grave full of bodies, so she may have been able to pull it off.
    She would be named the greatest necromancer of all time indeed.

    I used to always side with the stormcloaks untill i decided to make a roman themed character. But now i side with the imperials because of some dialogue that can be had with General Tulius. At the end of the civil war questline if you stick around after the speech he gives he actually reveals how he actually feels about the thalmor and that he still considers them an enemy and an issue to be taken care of in the future. Yea i think an independent skyrim would be better but the empire is truly the most capable at taking on the thalmor, especially with the Dragonborn backing them up. We can imagine that in the next Elder Scrolls game there will be some kind of lore about the Dragonborn saying how insanely powerful he was/is even though as the player your limited in how strong you can be due to gameplay mechanics, theres no limit to how strong you could be in the lore of the elder scrolls, perhaps if the dragonborn is dead by the next game he will have reached divine status like talos did.

    Did you guys see that you can now effectively build forts and settlements in Skyrim? It works surprising well, I'm only on Xbox One, but the mod is called Tundra Defense by Elderwind, it works really well with the NPC's travel type mods and such and you can recruit random npc's to live and fight for your forts, etc. Open Civil War by Simtam gives you that fleshed out feel along with some of those battle site mods and stuff.

    If the dark elves want things to improve they can do it themselves but they don't. They are stubborn and refuse to help in the war effort in any way.
    There are many high elves in Windhelm. Even they are more trusted and own land along side the nords. Maybe it isn't because the dark elves are elves. Maybe it's because they refuse to conform to the rest of the community.
    They are guests and yet they act like the guy in his 30's in his parents basement. Both sides are have culpability, you should act as if the 30 year old is somehow a victim.
    I've tested and if you only help dark elves you can still be thane. So it's more neutrality that an active push down.

    the dark elves of morrowind were a slave trading, incredibly xenophobic and racist (thinking every other race beneath them no better than beasts of burden) and a mortal enemy of the kingdoms of skyrim for millenia. the simple fact that a dunmer could even live in skyrim without being skewered by the populace, let alone in windhelm, is a massive gesture, especially when the dunmer have never and will never extend such a kindness in their entire history.

    • @Hazy18
      @Hazy18 6 лет назад +21

      John Blood the Dark Elves only have so much beef with the nords because of Ysgrammor invading Morrowind on his quest to kill all the Elves and took Skyrim from the Snow Elves. What you say is true about how they felt about beast races like Khajiit and Argonians but it’s more the High Elves that think everything is beneath them

    • @159tony
      @159tony 6 лет назад +16

      Wrong. the elves had their beef well before then. plus, ysgramor's quest to kill all the elves are the events during and after the songs of return. To the atmorans, the only good elf, after the night of tears, was a dead elf. Plus, morrowind also housed some snow elves. The tomb of the snow prince should tell you as much. Ysgramor was on a quest of revenge, other elven nations just got in the way. But i'll still say that the dunmer have well deserved whatever treatment is tossed their way during this time of the fourth era, not because of any "yaargh, their ancestors commited great evils" no nothing like that. but because some of those elves, or indeed most of them, committed to that kind of bullshit when it was still ongoing in the third, second and some even the first era.

    • @Hazy18
      @Hazy18 6 лет назад +13

      John Blood exactly, the Atmorans judged an entire species group on the actions of one type of them, the Snow Elves, whos home they had invaded in the first place. The Chimer/Dunmer were too busy warring with the Dwemer at the time of the Night of tears and only started fighting against the Nords when the Atmorans started to invade the border of Morrowind which caused the Chimer and Dwemer to put aside their differences for a time to work together against the nords. I’m not disagreeing with you that they did do bad things but neither the nords or dark elves are any better than eachother, I’m just biased because they’re my favourite race of the ES games but it’s not a very valid point to use their looking down on other races like Argonains and using them as slaves considered how all the nords treat the Argonians and Khajiit during Skyrim as well as the Dunmer, even blaming them for the collapse of Winterhold along with most nords views on High Elves, when not all of them support the Thalmor and also how they look down on Bretons as half Elves and magic users.

Also even better than using it to change sides, reverse pickpocket it on to Ralof then after the quest is over pickpocket it from him in the Sleeping Giant Inn. So there is a kind of way to keep it

    Today was a first.
    During this playthrough, I sided with the Empire for the Civil War and avoided the Dark Brotherhood since it doesn't
    make sense to kill the Emperor after siding with the Imperials.
    Anyway, I was traveling past Fort Greenwall and a garrison of Imperials were there. As I walked past the front gate,
    one of the soldiers addressed me as 'Legate'.
    I can't remember having my rank acknowledged by ANY soldier once the CW quest line was finished - regardless of which
    side I chose. Maybe it had something to do with me actually being at one of the forts and not in one of the cities?
    Either way, it felt pretty good to have someone remember who I am.
    I'm sick and tired of the guards giving me shit, even though I'm a Thane in practically every Hold, as well as
    Solstheim's Favorite Adventurer AND the person who saved the World - 3 times I might add.
    I especially get pissed at the Whiterun guards: "I catch your hand in my pocket and I'm going to cut it off."
    What you're GONNA catch is my foot up your ass, jag-off.
    You KNOW I'm the Dragonborn. I fought right alongside you when the dragon attacked the Western Watchtower,
    and it wasn't even my job. It was YOUR job.
    =====================================
    Maybe I'll be a 100% evil person on my next playthrough.
    I'll side with the Dark Brotherhood, the Thieves Guild, Cannibals, Molag Bal, Boethiah, the Stormcloaks
    (yes, they ARE the bad guys), Lord Harkon AND the Champions (I don't like werewolves.)
    I'll pickpocket everyone in sight and drop a poison just to be a dick.
    Oooh, I know... I'll kill every parent so I can send all the kids to Honorhall Orphanage. They'll like it there.
    I'll ignore every dragon that Alduin raises from the dead and let them devastate the towns. "Somebody DO something!"
    I AM. I'm watching you die.
    I'll make Maven Black-Briar one of my mistresses. She shouldn't be sleeping with her son, anyway.
    Plus, I'll spit in the Jarl's eye.
    But the MOST evil thing I will do is.....
    You guessed it - I won't lay a finger on Nazeem. He can have Whiterun and the Cloud District all to himself.

They asked why i were wearing their armor and i had two dialog options (cant remember them). One of the options caused them to attack me because i might be a spy or something

    I’ve noticed that the two Jarl-killing quests were removed, I know Balgruuf’s quest was removed because he was one of Bethesda’s favorite characters, but I wonder why they removed Elisif’s

    Wow, first "things you might have missed in Skyrim" list I've seen where more than two facts were things I didn't know. In fact, I didn't know any of these.

      i do fight for the empire, but that's only because rikke is there. tullius is a warmongering piece of shit who only wants skyrim as a shield for cyrodil and cares nothing about it's people. galmar is a racist and warmongering piece of shit.
      ulfric has some of the same tendencies as galmar, but he also sees reason. if you could put someone with some sense next to him, such as rikke, skyrim would in much better shape.

    Ambarys is definitely an imperial spy , the armour he has in his quarters is no ordinary imperial legion armour , it is a full set of penitus occulatus armour which became the empires's intelligence service after the fall from grace of the Blades after the assassination of Uriel Septim. Hope this helps :)

    Never thought about going after the crown for one side and then betraying them. Going to have to try that there and see how it works out.

    I’ll admit, the treatment of the Dark Elves in Windhelm is a huge reason why I side with the Imperials 90% of the time.
