I know your pain all too well. It's amazing how a cat(or any pet) can become part of the family. And when they pass it can be just as difficult as losing a member of the family.
Don't worry most of the time when are little furry move on to the next world, they are always watching us and somehow they manage to let new furry buddies accompany us in the near future.

One of my cats was starting at me, and he kept on doing it, I got in his face and meowed, he looked more confused than anything, he then proceeded to walk backwards off the table from terror.

When my cat meows wanting to go out during a storm, I open the door to show him. He then looks at the weather, then up at me, and meows: "Yeah, you're right, it's pretty crappy and cold out there! If you need me, I'll be on the litter tray." Then he turns around and saunters away. Problem solved. 👍
My kitty used to stick her pawcoutvthe door. If it was too cold she'd shake it and turn to stay inside! Its nice when they know what the want isnt it?
I had a cat years ago that would go hide whenever it would thunder. If it was just raining and he wanted to go out, I'd open the door, he'd go to the door, realize it was wet and quickly decide he wanted no part of it.

When I was younger, we had this cat named Jinx. She was, in almost every sense of the word, MY cat. She'd constantly be with me, and whenever I'd come home from school, she'd be meowing up a storm, and we just sorta summed it up to her telling me about her day, to which I'd try and go along with... *sigh*, I wish I had her still...

My cat knows; treat, outside, autumn (her name), food, hi, how are you?, and meow
She'll sometimes respond(meow) to these words/quotes. Otherwise she turns her head or her ears.
She understands mostly everything we say to her....its pretty funny!
Ive had her for 11 years. Im 14. We are quite similar in age and we get along perfectly!

Same here we'd have conversations where my cat would respond with a nod or shake for a yes or no. For complicated responses he used different types of meows for certain words and phrases. Like for example a loud yowl in the exact tone of a human swearing in anger to convey frustration or an insult (we argued a lot about the morality of keeping animals as pets and not companions.) Or a purr followed by a mutual headbutt as a greeting. Pets in general want to communicate with you and how easy it is for individual owners to communicate with their pets. Is simply a matter of how willing the individual is to meet your pet halfway in how they communicate as well.
Eventually me and my cat settled on calling it a partnership. But he eventually left anyways out of frustration at initially being a pet and not an equal. He never returned sadly.

Each cat makes up his own way of talking to humans.
I've heard that cats have a meow special to their owners. I'm guessing that's probably true since female cats have a special kind of meow they use for their kittens as well.

debbie Cats really only meow to communicate with things that aren't cats, but they have their own little personalities so they each meow differently, especially when they really know who they're talking to. My cat mostly only meowed at my mom when he was hungry, but he seemed to babble at me just for fun 😂
@LinusDickTips I once had a cat who had a meow special to "let me out to do my business". She didn't use the litter tray unless she had no choice. I always knew she needed to go because of her special meow that told me. She had other meows for communicating specific things to me. Six, if I recall correctly. Our current cat uses staring more than vocalizing. Once he gets my attention, he will lead me to what he wants...to go outside, to eat, to cuddle, to play. Lately he's begun sitting in one place in the kitchen when he wants something, even when it's not food he wants. The food is right there so that's how this started, but now he goes there as an all purpose request place. 😆

Their meows actually mean something. Short chirps like that first cat is usually a signal to follow them. They want to show you something. (It may just be the refrigerator, but still...) I listen to my cat, and yes, she usually gets what she wants.

How could we not? They usually start the conversations. 😝
Apparently the cat's meow was developed by cats to communicate with humans only. You will seldom hear cats meowing at each other, and even when they do, they are using their "human voice". Even though cats have been "domesticated" longer than any other animal (probably hanging out with humans longer than dogs), they are still essentially wild, and are perfectly capable of surviving in the world without humans. Not so most dogs, many of whom would not last long in the wilds without their human companions.
And as we all know...cats are independent from their human "owners" and in some circumstances will venture off to find "better" humans than the ones that are presently living with them. Very interesting animals, & l have and love both a dog and cat.
P.S. The history of cat & human interaction is very interesting. It seems that as soon as humans were able to accumulate enough food to store away some grains, seeds and roots, it became apparent that there was a need for pest control, and cats naturally filled the bill, becoming the hungry pest control officer and making their presence vital to our survival. Who came first, the dog or cat is a chicken or the egg arguement...semantics and without any real meaning. ❤🐕🐈

It's not true that cats have been domesticated longer than dogs. Genetic studies show that dogs diverged from their wolf ancestors around 20,000-40,000 years ago. Cats weren't domesticated until humans invented agriculture in Mesopotamia, around 10,000-12,000 years ago. The more recent domestication of cats may explain why they are more independent than dogs, and a little more "wild". I think it makes them more interesting than dogs, but that's just me.
That's not true. If you ever encountered feral newborn kitties you could hear them meowing constantly, calling for momma. At that point they don't know what the heck human is.

My cat doesn't talk very much, but she did when she was younger. She mostly talks when she really wants something like food or to get me up in the morning, and when she greets me when I come home to scold me for being late.
I have a white Turkish Angora that I have conversations with all the time. He's very vocal.

I’m convinced that cats actually understand what you’re saying to them. I always tell my cats where I’m going and when I’ll be back, explain what I’m doing with them even discuss the weather if necessary. They probably know more than we realise. ❤️😻🐾🐈🤣
I think they understand too. when I got married, my wife had a cat, which still lives with us. But she is Greek - and always spoke Greek to the cat. So I had to learn all the Greek phrases he knew, so I could ask him if he’s hungry, or thirsty, or whatever. By now, he understands my English and don’t have to do that any longer, but it was pretty funny to have to learn to speak a little Greek just so I could communicate with the cat..... interestingly enough, he speaks the same language to the both of us! Ha

LinusDickTips Incredible, but I believe it. I could write a book about the way they communicate and understand what you are saying. Some cats are known to have canine traits, like fetching things.

From what I’ve read, cats only really communicate with humans this way and not so much other cats. It’s an evolutionary trait that endears themselves to humans who’ll provide food, shelter and affection for being so loveable! Amazing creatures.

I've had 2 Gray Tabbies, both rescues, 1 female in 2007, & 1 male 2016. Both were together about 8 months when my female died in August 2017. Neither cat was vocal or talkative or ever meowed, nor I suspect could, but both would squeak much like a mouse. The late female Tigress was very smart & knew the function of a doorknob; if only she had the hand to operate it!
I thought my cat was the only one who knew how to open a door.
F*** My Life I had a total of three cats who opened and closed my kitchen cabinets, and I had two kittens who worked out a two-kitten method of unlocking and opening my bathroom door. I gave up on trying to keep them out of the bathroom. When I tried to keep the cats out of my kitchen cabinets, one of them pulled a cabinet door off of its hinges while hunting a mouse.
Nope the cat we have will open the bedroom door and run around at night but then we locked him out one day and he stopped for a bit but it’s started again
I think every cat knows how to open the door - get the 'uman slave to do it! Much easier and doesn't use any energy.
There was a British "system" back in the 70's to train your cat to use the toilet (28 steps) and even flush it (another 14 steps, IIRC). The problem was, you had to put a small litter box under the lid for the first steps, and that proved too difficult for the humans to deal with.
If you watch, they clearly know how knobs work, and they hate to be reminded about the whole opposable-thumb thing. I've seen them not miss a beat with lever-handles.
All of these cat responses are really wonderful. I love reading these stories about cats.
The weirdest thing about cats for me everytime when occupied around my house or get in contact with one and feed them like they are part of the family, positive things mostly happens in the near future. I remembered after the passing of the last 2 cats that lived around my house and I taken care of which are Mimi and Whitey, I felt the same level of sadness of when my great grandma moved on to the better world in 04. Sometimes I wish they live longer enough to see me raise a family of my own and I adopt them to my household.
So as the years passed by(which were 2015 which Mimi passed in December/2016 which pure young Whitey moved on ) which is now 2017, at the beginning of summer semester I was feeling lonely and the thought of all the pets and furry ones I met who moved on between the years 2015-2017 came rushing in my head this took place right after my weight training course as I was heading towards my second class that day. Something told me to keep going like it was a spirit guiding me, so I pushed on and just like that I encounter the girl that I literally dream of when I was small. And this was the same woman that saw back in early 2016 in which my body gave off paranormal sensation, but at the sametime it was filled with positive energy and happiness. I remember I doubted myself when I first her saw then and forgot about her immediately telling myself that I'm too ugly go with someone like that and she is way out of my league. But she was looking at me this time as her eyes stuck on me like a magnet. I think this was a gift from both Whitey and Mimi. Sorry guys my eyes are kinda watery right now because not because of that happy day, is because I really miss both Mimi & Whitey. And I hope I see them again and all my other furry buddies when I go.
Even though both Whitey & Mimi are gone, I now have 2 younger cats that are now living with me. And do Love them both, but no cat will ever replace both Mimi & Whitey.

Our adorable shy male tabby, can't meow. He makes high pitched squeaks and squeals, almost sounds like puppies. It is the cutest sound to my ears.
