  • In the next of our 'At home with Ralph' series, Ralph talks to the extraordinary David Pinnegar, owner of Hammerwood Hall, a country house in the South of England containing 30 pianos, all tuned differently. He has a method of tuning dating back to the middle of the 19th century which, he convinces us, is a superior system!

I'm a Piano Technician and I've always thought that I was a nerd. Nope. This sets a new bar.
That being said, this is a beautiful example of the Tuner's Art.
I personally like this system well, but I doubt that we're every going to get any serious takers. Folks are just too used to 12ET.

      Try ruclips.net/video/AHAZjcPmtrs/видео.html . It's a tuning that's catching on.

Really enjoyed watching this, I remember Ralph recommended I get in touch with David about learning how to tune this way! Very interesting for someone with pitch (and used to equal temperament through an orchestral background) to hear those luscious home keys sounding so resonant!
Interesting too that the F# harmonic example didn't follow the harmonic series we're used to in audio (root, octave, 3rd, 5th, octave, 3rd, 5th, 7th, octave, 9th etc)

I came across David in a Pianostreet discussion thread. His dedication was evident in his desire for others to 'hear' what he was saying, and in this video his Passion is evident. It's only yesterday that my mind and ears opened to the richness of unequal temperament, and grasping the degree of subtleties, the nuances, that the great composers were conveying.

Typically Equal Temperament allows you to more easily play in all keys

No. This temperament enables playing in all keys and easily too. Try ruclips.net/video/AHAZjcPmtrs/видео.html for example.

the first note he plays is out of tune, then he announces he's done.
