Wait... we have a cutscene in a Metal Gear Solid game were Snake DOESN'T repeat the last word of whatever the other person said but as a question? WHAT BASS-ACKWARDS WORLD IS THIS?!!
All throughout this speech I was thinking "I can throw a grenade to the truck behind us, knock out the guards in truck and drag skull face away before the guys up front can catch us. Fulton him out then call a chopper."
You know what Kojima should've added to this scene? Skull Face should've carried a small wooden box containing two cigars; one for himself and another for Venom as an ironic "gesture of respect" (as he still thinks Venom is Big Boss himself). Both of them smoke their cigars while the song plays on the background (would've actually been badass). And then, after the Sahelanthropus fight when Skull Face dies slowly beneath the rubble, he's surrounded by a pool of gasoline. Venom lights the unfinished stub of cigar he was given, takes a long puff and as he exhales the smoke, throws it on Skull Face who suddenly is set on fire. The man suffers the same fate when he was a child, but this time he'll die a slow and agonizing death. And thus Venom/Big Boss finally becomes "a demon" he was always hinted to be.
I absolutely *love* non-cinematic, one-way conversation with long, awkward pauses in between segments of Skull Face's monologue. Big Boss had the absolute best lines by far, though. It would have been really cool if you could get another 1 minute long cassette tape *after* that showcases Big Boss' thoughts. Or, Kaz could say every line for him, and then Big Boss could say "Yeah...I guess...." again.
That same philosopher (Emil Cioran) said this as well: "Revenge is not always sweet, once it is consummated we feel inferior to our victim." So, if Achmed (Jeff Dunham Reference) here was truly a man of literature, he would have known that if he takes revenge on Zero, it would not end well for him.
He did end up getting away with it somewhat through using the parasites to cripple zero using a fake pin badge and turn him into a vegetable relieing on life support to live.
Good point: Never has there been a game where the Protagonist and Antagonist are sitting so close to each other without either actively trying to kill the other Bad point: Venom just leaves Skullz in the dust the entire trip
Fuck haters, I really like this Sins Of The Father moment. I mean, when those two, worst enemies, are watching at each other, and this THE SIIIIIIIINS NEVER DIES plays, gives me chills.
MarsShadow Skull Face's face is scary and is badly burnt, anyone in his position wouldn't want to directly look him in the eye, if anything I find it completely logical for him not feeling comfortable being there with him
Despite the criticism shown here, I think Skull Face had plans that reflects off indigenous sufferage, making this scene very relevant & contempoary. Many tribes in rural US & indigenous communities are vocally displaying their distain over the loss of native tounge. Much less the impact it's receiving from overwhelmed economic incentives & unilateralism from English usage. Each tribe often dreams or fantasizes over some "blaze of glory" way of retaliation against governments enforcing this status quo. It touches on sociology & anthropology to the point that Skull Face is a martyr for his Hungarian roots and is acting on his blaze of glory moment. A mutagent lasts decades when fully used, so killing all those speaking English is an attempt to change that status quo. Written English would be recessed if a vector killing strain of English existed 24/7.
It's honestly a cool idea for a villain motivation. Sadly, it comes right before he dies and pretty much only comes up right here. You don't find out any more about the man except for the briefing tapes you unlock at the end of the story missions, at which point Skullface has been dead for hours at that point and it doesn't matter much at that point.
I do like some of the ideas behind Skull Face's character. The concept of wanting to eradicate a whole language is interesting but utterly ridiculous and grandiose in it's execution, which is often the charm behind Kojima's storytelling. I think this scene would have worked a lot better if it was shortened, the song was removed, and Venom actually spoke instead of just sitting there like a plank. MGS1 had amazing conversations between Snake and his enemies so this feels like a missed opportunity to me. They must have been paying Kiefer 10 grand a line or something.
I was expecting something epic from big boss at 5:03. Like he was re-adjusting himself for an amazing speech. Explaining to him that wiping out a tongue is not a solution. That nuclear weapon proliferation is not a solution. It's a perpetuation of the problem. You can justify suffering all you want. In the end, people will not leave the world be. The world will end. You are a madman. And I am a Snake waiting for the right moment to sink my teeth in. And the second the jeep stops you hear the radio saying "This is Pequod. Ready to fire on your command, Boss!" And then Big Boss yells "FIRE!" Then slow mo CQC badassery and explosions ensue. But then Skull Face pushes a button and unleashes Sahelanthropus before Snake can stop him. Instead we get awkward stare for 3 minutes.
It wasn't until like my 5th viewing that I realized Skull Face's vision of the future becomes Big Boss' plan for Outer Heaven. Uniting the world through war and nuclear deterrence, "a language of nukes." Now I finally understand why Skull Face's phantom is with Venom in the final cutscene. Because with Sahelanthropus, Venom (and Big Boss) will fulfill his will.
Fuck, I don't care how awkward that silent stare was, that song is so awesome, at 6:35, I even remember in my game, it was turning to morning, so when ha art started, the sun shone through the area. It was so memorable I love this game
1:25 Skullface: "a philosopher once said 'It is no nation we inhabit, but a language.'" Venom Snake: (Looks at camera) "Sheesh! You hearing this shit too?"
This scene is perfect. Skull Face believes he's talking to the real Big Boss, believes that he's explaining his grand plan to the real deal. Meanwhile, in Punished Snake's eye there is this emptiness. He's like an empty shell, a void staring back. Skull Face has no idea that his glare is for nothing, he's not talking to the true Boss, and his plans are about to fall apart not because of his rival, but because there just happened to be someone even angrier and more vengeful than him in the general area, as if he was crushed by a simple move of fate rather than having an epic downfall. I also loved controlling the camera. MGSV is about gameplay and a variety of storytelling ideas and being able to view the staredown for yourself is awesome.
+ZerogunRivale This scene is garbage. It's absolutely disappointing that he's speaking to the fake BB, a random medic. I don't care if he's the best solider in MSF. People begin to blame Konami for this when it was obviously Kojima to blame for this horrible display of writing. Really? I want to rid the world of the English language? What would that do? Nothing. Especially when Skullface speaks English. Snake doesn't say a word, because Kojima thinks it's being edgy for Snake not to speak. Are you kidding me? Snake never says a word to Skullface? Also why not just kill him? Such a cliche villain who doesn't kill the protagonist when he has the chance. Boss nevers displays any anger in fact it seems he's not really after Skullface for revenge. So much that he doesn't even kill Skullface. If you think this is brilliant then you are easily impressed and have never played the previous metal gear games. There is such a thing as a bad opinion, and if you have one be prepared to defend it. Kojima really dropped the ball on this game.
a) If you have to insult the person you are speaking to, you aren't very good at getting your opinion across. I've played every Metal Gear game, including the MSX ones. Metal Gear Solid 3 is still my favorite, followed by MGS2. b) Skull Face wants to wipe out English because he wants revenge against Zero. He clearly says in his speech that he sees Zero and Cipher as representative of the military force that the US government dealt out during that time. Since in Metal Gear universe Cipher is the one influencing the government, it sort of makes sense. Since Zero is his target for revenge and English is his tongue, then it's the choice for language which he wants to wipe out. Simultaneously, he feels this would stop Cipher totally and wholly since at this point, Cipher has stretched its arms into much of the US government and military. c) I agree, it's cliche for Skull Face not to kill Snake right then and there. It was also cliche for Solidus not to kill Raiden during the torture sequence and Volgin not to kill Snake when he caught him at Grozny Grad. d) Punished Snake never displays any emotion, but he's also this kind of being of emptiness, a fractured being who really is neither Medic nor Big Boss. He's not anybody and doesn't really have his own identity. Whether one likes the way this plays it, is of course, a matter of opinion.
+tylerboy565 how about you just accept it that konami is the bitch that made this shit , who knows maybe kojima was already out when they were about to finish the game , its not the games fault
+ZerogunRivale I'm actually surprised that people glance over the fact that kojima is basically handing over the director seat for the camera in this scene. There is so much going on in this scene, this video doesn't do much justice in keeping it static, and I agree with others while it can be a little awkward to see them have a stare down, that's kind of the point. Skull Face is showing his "power" and venom doesn't have the words for it. The music describes vemon for you.
+BloodPlusPwn As if Kojima can do no wrong. Face it he dropped the ball with the story in this game. You know it was him especially since he has his name plastered all over the game credits before and after every mission. Clearly he is taking credit for all the writing. Not Konami, which is to blame for many things but not for the mediocre story Kojima wrote.
That's a lot of stuff I never said? I was just making a joke. Of course Kojima dropped the ball. He reached way out of him area of expertise and delivered a subpar game as a result.

LOL guys it's cause he's supposed to be YOU ha ha, what a great recycled twist from MGS2 eh? They could have made Venom Solidus and it would have ended great but nope. Have an unfinished game.
+Jacob Dahl Such a cliche in Metal Gear Solid now. That along with the "I was born on the battlefield origin" But you know what, it kind've works. It shows how a persons origin can influence the way they turn out in life. Like if soldiers hadn't attacked Skullface's village, and he had a better origin he might not have become such a hateful and sadistic person in life. He might have become a good man who instead devoted his life to helping people.
Funfact but did you know that Skull Face was originally going to be named Scar Face? And that James did all his lines for the game in under an hour? I found that out and thought I share while we all wait for the jeep to reach it’s destination… also one time I was replaying this mission, Skull Face got through the whole speech without that awkward silence moment. I don’t know how it happened but he said everything in time that when we reached the destination he was finally done with his speech.
This has to be the most awkward cutscene in the entire video game history. 5 minutes of a guy talking on the other person who never responds during a car ride, then soul music just starts playing for a few minutes of silence.
whats funny but kinda fucked up about Skullface is it's heavily implied the entire reason he forgot his language was he stopped speaking it seemingly not realizing how useful knowing his mother tongue would be. It's kinda implied he decided to join the Allies against the nazis. It's implied the main reason he lost his language was due to his drive for power. He didn't think to keep his mother tongue as he was too busy working to make himself more then his homeland every was. Hungarian was a safe language to speak in the USSR and most likely in the west as well. Everything points to Skullface being a fool and not practicing his mother tongue.
They should have done a proper cutscene instead of doing the driving simulator thing they did. It was a cool scene, but I prefer the classic MGS cutscene style.
+darkmay200 the ladder climb had more personality to it than this one. you fucking had Venom just doing his IDLE animation the whole time which took away from this scene, it was obvious that konami rushed Kojipro.

Imagine if Solid Snake was the one on the other end of Skull Face's seat.
"I was born in a small village."
"A small village?"
"I was still a child when we were raided by soldiers, foreign soldiers."
"Foreign soldiers?"
"Torn from my elders, I was made to speak their language."
"Speak their language?"
This is so accurate. Take my like, funnyman.
"Phantom Pain?"
I could hear David Hayter already
Psycho mantis ?
God I wish he appeared more in the game. I friggin love his voice.
Corrderio
The tapes with him are ASMR
he also sounds like he hisses when he starts talking......like a snake.......
@@A-B101 Yeah, especially the one where he orders his soldiers to rape Paz
Play Dawn of War 2.
This man’s voiced wheeljack in transformers prime! 😂
The way "Sins of the father" starts implies that he commissioned that song specifically for when he gave that speech
Gordon Freeman could be in Snake's place and wouldn't make any difference in this scene. LOL
+Batman com Preparo I bet Freeman's Mind would have some interesting things to say lol
+Brian Cahill " As fried megi was explaining he's plan to me I could not help but to feel a bit tired by the soothing sound of music that was coming from the radio of the car, I slowly found myself drifting of to the land of sheeps... and in my dreams I saw what many would believe impossible... a cloud made out of pancakes.
When I came to we were still sitting in the car still going, Raidio turned off and no pancakes in sight.
It turns out that mr megi had noticed my drift to sleep but had kindly refrained from waking me so that I Morgan Freeman could continue enjoying my slumber... now awake and radio turned off he was free to continue with he's explonation to rule the world"

huh funny thing is only now when I read your comment did I realized it was GORDON freeman he was talking about x)
Wait... we have a cutscene in a Metal Gear Solid game were Snake DOESN'T repeat the last word of whatever the other person said but as a question? WHAT BASS-ACKWARDS WORLD IS THIS?!!
METAL GEAR?!!!
LIQUIIID?!
DEEPTHROAT?!
GRAY FOX?!!
FIDDLES!?!?!?!?!?!
All throughout this speech I was thinking "I can throw a grenade to the truck behind us, knock out the guards in truck and drag skull face away before the guys up front can catch us. Fulton him out then call a chopper."
I feel ya hahaha plus that whole moment of silence I was like do I do it now haha than I noticed I can't do anything but move the camera

the way snake keeps looking at the camera going like "the fuck is he on about?" is killing me
Sins of the Father playing in this scene was sooooo awkward imo, but I liked the speech

Skull face is venom snake
They liked the song so much that they stopped talking and just awkwardly stared at each other.
And thus Venom/Big Boss finally becomes "a demon" he was always hinted to be.
shiiiiiiiit.....
Pretty fucking good
GNARLY
That would have made this scene so good.
Not bad, guess we'll see how Death Stranding turns out
Snake is just looking away during the scene.
"You feel it too, don't you?"
5:00
Snake: "So. Is this one of the top 40 hits?"
Skullface: "Oh don't even get me started on the music!"
Kojimas love for Orwell's 1984 really showed in MGSV.
+seanbhoy192 after all betrayals? why?
*****
youve ot a point there.
+Guybrush Threepwood What does that have to do with this scene...?
+Nison545 "This war is peace"
"War is peace" is a phrase that is splattered throughout 1984.
Guybrush Threepwood Oh, good call. Missed that line.
Nah, big boss is sitting in his chair rn. Hm hmm
You know this is not the real Big Boss when he didn't question everything he listens.
Im still absorbed in my thought that bigboss didnt talk here just to ensure he got no parasites in him
Wow, wtf that makes sense
That's actually a good point, wow
we get it. you dont like english.
+Erick Pan-Cho Blame Zero.
'Also I hated my second grade grammar teacher! What a bitch...'
Damn, he got the idea for Vocal Cord Parasites when he poisoned her coffee? D:
he got a f in 101
He doesn't hate english. He hates zero, who is english as anyone can be.
I like how Venom just looks at the camera like " you're in for a ride guys"
It took skullface 3 minutes to remember the how the end of his speech went he must have felt so embarrassed
Finally someone in this comment section actually trying to understand this scene instead of making jokes
it took me like 10mins to find a good comment
Good point: Never has there been a game where the Protagonist and Antagonist are sitting so close to each other without either actively trying to kill the other
Bad point: Venom just leaves Skullz in the dust the entire trip
7:30
"You asleep or what?"
"I could probably fulton ourselves right now, but that wouldn't be polite".
0:46 looks directly into the camera like The Office
"Can you skip this? Or is this required"
In this scene they foreshadow that Venom is not the real BB, the real one would be repeating everything that Skull Face says as a question
Fuck haters, I really like this Sins Of The Father moment. I mean, when those two, worst enemies, are watching at each other, and this THE SIIIIIIIINS NEVER DIES plays, gives me chills.
+CapitanMine Same :)
+CapitanMine Really...why would anyone hate this?
+Miyakolover Because people can't handle this beautiful art.
huskiesghost Biased society views can shun down great artists for decades if not centuries if history taught us anything
@Reconsider your position I'm sorry, but HOW does "autistic" fit in your comment?
It's honestly a cool idea for a villain motivation. Sadly, it comes right before he dies and pretty much only comes up right here. You don't find out any more about the man except for the briefing tapes you unlock at the end of the story missions, at which point Skullface has been dead for hours at that point and it doesn't matter much at that point.
Definitely a very good villain, only MGS can produce characters like that. Too bad his cutscenes weren’t as good as his tapes/background
nanomachines
I do like some of the ideas behind Skull Face's character. The concept of wanting to eradicate a whole language is interesting but utterly ridiculous and grandiose in it's execution, which is often the charm behind Kojima's storytelling. I think this scene would have worked a lot better if it was shortened, the song was removed, and Venom actually spoke instead of just sitting there like a plank. MGS1 had amazing conversations between Snake and his enemies so this feels like a missed opportunity to me. They must have been paying Kiefer 10 grand a line or something.
4:05 snake just broke the forth wall...he looks at the camera with intense boredom and confusion. Lol
"Get a load of this guy"
If I was Skull Face, I'd be REALLY wondering why the heck Venom isn't saying a darn thing.
@BEASTFRAG435 why are we still here? After 6 years of this game. Just to suffer. Ah. So much wasted potential from this game
One of my favorite elements of MGS were the messages given to us. Words have meaning. The way we used them within ourselves and to others.
Skullface: "I was born in a small village"
Big Boss: "And how does it taste?"
*venom puts a cassette into his walkman*
[♬Tupac - I just don't give a fuck♬]

I was born in a small village. I was still a child when we're played like damn fiddles!
0:36
Snake:”slaps skull faces hands away”
Snake:hands off mister this body is reserved for kaz and kaz only
Fuck, I don't care how awkward that silent stare was, that song is so awesome, at 6:35, I even remember in my game, it was turning to morning, so when ha art started, the sun shone through the area. It was so memorable
I love this game
1:25
Skullface: "a philosopher once said 'It is no nation we inhabit, but a language.'"
Venom Snake: (Looks at camera) "Sheesh! You hearing this shit too?"
I like how Big Boss seem not to care one bit about Skull Face's heel promo, he's like "get over it already"
+ZerogunRivale You should really fuck off with the ending
I too liked this scene, but it looks like Venom just wanted to whip out the Phantom Cigar and slip into another coma :D
Well, at least we can tell where they fired Kojima.
Glad some people realize that he might blew this project giben the fact he had 5-7 years developing it.
james roe That's exactly what I was saying.

I found that out and thought I share while we all wait for the jeep to reach it’s destination… also one time I was replaying this mission, Skull Face got through the whole speech without that awkward silence moment.

He was a pretty good idea for a villain. It's just that didn't execute that idea very well.
This has to be the most awkward cutscene in the entire video game history. 5 minutes of a guy talking on the other person who never responds during a car ride, then soul music just starts playing for a few minutes of silence.
Skull Face: I will stop Zero from controlling the world with censorship
Also Skull Face: I will delete language.
Venom Snake: You fell for my trap card! Revenge Sign Language!
Skull Face: "To unite America and the entire world..."
Snake: "Who the fuck starts a conversation like that?"
whats funny but kinda fucked up about Skullface is it's heavily implied the entire reason he forgot his language was he stopped speaking it seemingly not realizing how useful knowing his mother tongue would be. Everything points to Skullface being a fool and not practicing his mother tongue.
i wish there was a mod that would allow the wind to blow his hat off and someone in the convoy has to come out and fetch it then get back in the car
They should have done a proper cutscene instead of doing the driving simulator thing they did.
It was a cool scene, but I prefer the classic MGS cutscene style.
+Owari Dragon this was a classic mgs cutscene aka ladder climb
+darkmay200 the ladder climb had more personality to it than this one.
you fucking had Venom just doing his IDLE animation the whole time which took away from this scene, it was obvious that konami rushed Kojipro.
For a second, I thought you meant Marvel's Venom.
Hmmm.
Owari Dragon marvels venom and this venom have some things in common.
+Owari Dragon Nah I think the driving simulator thing was fine. Gave it a nice touch. There was no need for a cutscene.
People believe he gives his speech to the wrong person but he really meant the speech for us the player cause we are Big Boss
