Glacier National Park // The Floral Park Traverse

  • First let me explain the seemingly cold and callous reaction of my friends to my situation 3/4 of the way through this video. Everyone there has seen me spiral. They all know that there’s little they can do but make light of the situation and take some satisfaction in the fact that it’s not them feeling like they just got off the teacup ride at Disneyland. However, behind all the jokes made at my expense there’s a knowledge that they would do anything to make sure I don’t die out there. Also, I would definitely be making fun of them if the roles were reversed. When we set out on this adventure we didn’t know it had a name until a stranger on the trail educated us on it’s existence. Turns out we were attempting the Floral Park Traverse, a very aptly named 26 miles of floral splendor through Glacier National Park. This episode was filmed August 2. I’m not sure if that's peak flower time but it sure felt like it.

    Crushed it! If you all ever come out east head up to the White Mountains in New Hampshire. There is a 52 mile 15k vert hike called the White Mountain Hut Traverse. Its a rite of passage for the workers in the huts and the challenge is to complete it in one day.

      i was planning on doing it this summer but ran out of weekends finishing my 48 list. next year im planning the hut traverse, a double presi and extended pemi. also the hut traverse is closer to 17k vert

      No offense, but these guys live 30 min from the WURL which is like an upgraded version of the traverse you mentioned. And we just watched a video of them in Glacier, I don't think the White Mountain Traverse is high on their list.

    I live right by Glacier National Park...30 years hiking in the park and have done the floral traverse twice, the normal route is from Logan pass to Lake McDonald lodge. They added on miles by going to through Gunsight area, to hike in the dark at hidden lake is a dare above all dares as it is a dinner plate for Grizzly bears...that area is the highest concentration of Grizzlys in the lower 48s and loaded with huckleberries....you passed by more bears than you know. You guys are fun to watch love the intensity

    yes. Aug. 2 is peak floral time.
    I did part of this hike(Logan pass to Sperry to Lake McDonald) in 1987. Unforgettable. I've hike numerous times since to the ridge at the far end of Hidden lake to view Avalanche Lake where my parents ashes are. And I've have wandered down into floral park on a couple other occasions. Hidden lake itself, has been a destination of mine at least 50 times. It is my fortress of solitude.
    Good video. Nice to see those places from far back in my memory

    I spent a few days in Glacier back in August 1990. We rode on a motorcycle around the back roads to Polebridge, saw the burned trees from a fire in 1989 but also saw so many deer and much regrowth as well. I was 40 at the time and in much better shape than now, but was plagued by chronic migraine headaches. Motorcycle riding was very cathartic to a certain extent although I was down for 4 days of the 14 days of our trip. At the age of 69, it has been easy to look back and wish I had taken up running as well as all of the walking I thoroughly enjoyed. I have often wished I had taken better care of myself instead of taking care of everyone else. Thank you for this beautiful film which is so reminiscent of my 1st and only trip to a place East of the Rockies, a place I'd never seen before and will always remember with great fondness. I took 10 rolls of film and filled 3 photo albums with maps, pictures and souvenirs that I still have.

    Amazing content as always. I've never tried running before I stumbled upon this channel. I always thought it looked miserable(Danny puking probably doesn't help that). Because your videos do such a good job capturing the adventure, I decided to give it a go this summer. Ive done a few peak bagging days in the Colorado high country, and just competed a half marathon in Rocky Mountain National Park with a little bit of scrambling and route finding. no puking though. Thank you for the inspiration!

    Wow guys, what an amazing video! You should spend two weeks camping in Glacier next year and really go deep on the park, there are so many insane hikes and summits. To echo what everyone else here is saying:
    1. This is my favourite channel on youtube;
    2. Every time I get a notification that a MA video has dropped, I get as stoked as one can be;
    3. It is one thing for you guys to have the athletic ability to be able to manage to complete all of these adventures, but it is another to be able to film it and produce such incredible videos every damn time!
    To add some further things:
    1. Congratulations on making 2020 your biggest year ever (I think?), even despite the universal challenge we're all facing right now, the quality and content has been superb.
    2. Please, please keep it going, it's a pain having to wait two weeks between videos (though I think that may be beyond your control this year)!
    3. I've watched every video start to finish you've made in the past two years as I know how much watch duration matters on youtube!
    4. I cannot wait to see some autumn and winter content (I see you're in Aspen now, hope you're filming!)
    5. I am genuinely concerned for your vomiting Danny, the R2R can possibly be put down to sunstroke, but what was the reason this time? Hope you're okay, you crazy man, lol.
    Love from Ireland xx

    Awesome video as always guys! Frankly, with 80F+ temps, I'm amazed Danny didn't start suffering earlier, but glad for his sake he didn't. @Danny, please tell us you go out with some form of satellite PLB (position location beacon) just in case this heat sickness ever gets too extreme, particularly when you're on a solo mission. I reckon the guys could get you out as fast or faster, as it would take 'search & rescue' when you're all together.

Grant from the East, traversing to the summit of Stanton/Great Northern, then descending to the West via the normal climber's route. Beautiful photo opportunities with two different glaciers. You could also check out a winter tour to summit Grant and Liebig from the East.
