One of the best representations of what Synesthesia is like.

It's interesting watching someone else's experiences with synesthesia. I'm seeing something entirely different listening to this video, and the dissonance between what i'm hearing and seeing is super interesting

This is beautiful. I just found out I had Synesthesia (Before I always thought everyone associated colors and smells with names letters and numbers, saw and heard sounds, and heard colors)- I recently finished a book A Mango Shaped Space, and I had asked a few friends and family about numbers with personalities, letters with colors, and names with smells. I got no other reaction than "No, you are crazy." I have also been watching another RUclips channel, Echo Gillette, and I've heard her mention Michael Gagne quite a few times, so I decided to check him out for myself. As soon as I found this video, I was so happy to find that there are actually other people that understand me and can relate to my everyday experience. I loved this video, and I thought it was a beautiful representation of what it feels like to have Synesthesia. Whew, that was quite a slab of text- whoever made it through to the end of this, good for you, you get 100 Awesome Points.

Because I have a more mild form of synesthesia I never really thought much about it in my life before I just thought "That's just how the world is" and I thought it was a normal thing. After 21 years of my life I learned it wasn't normal at all and realized that I had synesthesia. Then I thought something was wrong with me, and my sister shared this video with me and I nearly cried, cause that's a lot of what it's like for me (not exactly, but close). I guess I'm not so alone. Thank you for this video.

When I hear music, a voice, or anything, my mind comes up with shapes. Not colors, just shapes and patterns. Sometimes they'll go around me, and I keep my eyes open and I look at it, even though nothing is really there. Sometimes I'll close my eyes and think of all the shapes and patterns. I like this video! It doesn't portray what I see (obviously), but it's still pretty cool!!

I also see patterns when I listen to music. when I'm listening to music I am standing in the middle of a room which is so big it seems eternal. then every sound is a pattern going up or down and when I focus on a pattern I see a thousand new patterns. It's really awesome to have this but it's so hard to explain :(

It's really quite weird to watch someone else's patterns on the screen while my own are going on in my head. But I don't think I could make something like this because whenever I look at a shape or a pattern it changes so quickly and I can't remember how it looked unless the sound is still playing.

Your experience of synesthesia is one of the closest to mine I've seen, especially with the tempo and textures and movement. This was awesome to watch; I'm an animator in the game design field right now, so I know how long this took you- amazing job 😮

Do you have synesthesia? What program do you use to animate that?? I have synesthesia and I'm a animation and film student, I'm making my titulation project about synesthesia and I'm very interest about that

I love Michel Gagné and I love this piece, but I don't think he has synesthesia. The sounds in the beginning are very similar, but are varying a lot visually. while this is very effective from an animation and direction standpoint, it betrays that it may not be his internal experience. synesthesia is not always well-designed and part of how it can be 'diagnosed' is by its consistency. not that each sound should be copy-pasted animation, but if that wobble noise is staying roughly the same volume and pitch i personally do not experience it changing color and especially not shape or texture. i don't really know what my point is, because i think this film is gorgeous and I'm actually not critical of it. I love the crackly-sounds as these bands of pattern, that feels 'accurate' (in quotes because every synesthete has a different, but consistent experience). the same general group of sounds is used throughout, but the visual style shifts drastically and seemingly at random? plus there are visual elements not tied to any sound, or repeated with very different sounds.. anyway. i just want to explain a little more about what synesthesia feels like, and say that overall this piece comes VERY close to describing the experience to people who do not see sounds. even my own sound visualizing animations aren't completely accurate because it is such an abstract thing.

You are correct. This film was a commission, planned and executed following a very methodical manner. My other abstract film, Sensology, which was done as a stream of consciousness exercise is much closer to a real synesthetic experience.
