    never saw a boom broken like that....mental note. Glad you avoided more damage.

      I had a J/105 boom break right over my head during a race. Snapped just aft of the vang. Little bits of aluminum rained down in my hair. Surprising but uneventful. But we were 10 minutes from our slip by motor.

    Well done guys....for beginners who are thinking of doing this ... Cruising world had a great article from a couple who had sailed the Pacific for years. If you push the boat and sail more than 120 nms a day... Things break. Things wear out. They slowed down, sailing became more comfortable and a lot less repairs.
    My advice.... From 20 yrs cruising experience.... Slow down and enjoy the sail.

    14 days that was a very quick trip. Well done guys. Sorry to see the boom broken. But no damage to you both and a lesson learned. Well done. I’m playing catch with your videos and really enjoying watching fellow brits following their dreams. I hope to be following it you in august this year when I until the line from the uk and head south and then across the pond.

    Well done I’d say... Amy is as adaptable as Matt is inventive. Obviously it’s a great feeling when you all can work so well together under stressful happenings. It’s always embarrassing, distressing, frustrating when something serious goes wrong with no expectations, but you handled it all well. Glad you could share it all; glad you let us come along. I’m a little late to your start, so I’m slowly catching up, albeit you are in the other ocean...but Ill catch a good wind and be with you before the end of year. 😉

    I've been all over catching up on your videos and have been very impressed with your sailing skills. Both of you. Later in your videos you admit any time two boats sail together it becomes a race but with you two I'm guessing a decent rivalry and bragging rights exists most of the time for who trims the boat better eking out that extra knot. It's a pleasure to watch.

    Bilge Alarm. Beeping or flashing light so you know when you have water down there. VERY simple, can be built with a little creativity and a float and switch, and a simple light and or buzzer/beeper.
    Breaking the boom, even La Vagabonde did that ! Not to feel ashamed. Great job guys, venturing out into the "unknown" (hoping for paradise).
    I went back to these episodes because I had a freak occurrence with my Ham Radio ! I was able to reach Cape Verde from my home in California with a wire antenna and a 5 watt ham radio ! My radio is similar to an HF marine radio but its sold to hams Amateur Radio. Typically a very easy test for a license. And, it will also work on Marine frequencies. A kit from India !
    The last Cabo Verde Island you talked of was beautiful !

    Lovely boat the Heritage. I owned one back in the 80s ' 'Velindra' and she is currently in Australia. Her owners a young English couple are working there for a few months (according to their blog) and will no doubt continue their journey when funds allow. I changed my Heritage ' for an Oyster 406 'Muskrat' and she is somewhere in the Greek Isles. Previous to my Heritage I had a Contessa 32 another great boat and the Heritage was like a stretched version particularly with it's sailing performance. Holman and Pye great designers and Oysters extremely well built.

      James Town good to hear you also loved your Heritage. Florence is our first yacht but we looked at a lot of different designs before chosing her, which turned out to be one of the best decisions we have ever made.

    Have been wondering how much sailing experience you guys had before setting off to Europe? I hear about folks going to sea with “none” but I never believe it...
    Did you go into the Med before embarking on your round the world sail?

    Just catching up on back issues while the shelter in place order effects us. Just finished the new sails from the Philippines.
    I watch all the cruisers.
    I must admit your lady is the the hottest of all the live aboard ladies.
    Not that it is a dog walk, there are some pretty ones posting videos.
    Nice fish btw. Your lady's cooking seems almost as astonishing as she is.

    Hey guys, loving the videos. Got a feeling your pole broke because you weren't bringing the pole forward to the clew when the genoa was reefed. The pole end should always be right up against the genoa clew otherwise you load up the pole unevenly and will chafe through your sheets much faster.

    Looking at the amount of roll the boat looks to be quite tender? Would sailing a bit off straight downwind have helped? Nice vid,thanks for putting it up.

    Great video of life crossing the Atlantic. Just a couple of questions. What went wrong with your preventer set-up and what are you now doing differently to avoid an accidental jibe?

    • @SailingYachtFlorence
      @SailingYachtFlorence  7 лет назад +7

      Hi Bruce, the preventer snapped where I had tied a bowline, its now spliced for more strength. However we have learnt that florence sails very well with no mainsail in above 20 knots. So now if we are sailing downwind in more than 20 knots we take the main down. We are also more cautious at night so reef down and sail a little slower if the weather is unsettled. cheers M&A

      Hi, when your boom broke Any also mentions something else giving before the boom folded, but I couldn’t make out what it was. Can you also give some details how you straightened it again. Cheers. Enjoying the videos and playing catch up

    • @SailingYachtFlorence
      @SailingYachtFlorence  6 лет назад +1

      The preventer snapped which allowed the boom to cross the boat. We bought a new boom section and transferred all of the fittings across from the old boom.

    Did your guys liked cape verde..

    • @SailingYachtFlorence
      @SailingYachtFlorence  7 лет назад +1

      justiniano amado we did enjoy Cape Verde and found it worth going there as we would have sailed that far south in order to pick up the trade winds. Sao Antao (I think that's how it's spelt) was our favourite island but the anchorage was poor so we took the ferry from Mindelo.

    Wow guys just catching up on vidoes I can only imagine having sprung a leak, broke a boom and spreader while underway in an Atlantic crossing. Now you know. Take nothing for granted and I bet you have 5 different things now to stop a leak you never thought of before. Corks, cedar wedges, rags, wax, all work when appropriate for the job at hand. And always keeps several pounds of marine tex aboard.my buddy lost a thru hull to a lightning strike and was able to plug it in the middle of the night in a squall. He said his hair stood up for like 20 minutes. His anchor and wind indicator was completely gone. No thanks.
