Atlantic crossing - we've hit a whale!

- We lose our engine, escape a small fire, run into a gale, lose our steering and then, to round it off, we hit a whale.
This is our second leg sailing east across the North Atlantic Ocean, from Bermuda to the Azores. Our first leg in the previous video was sailing up from the Caribbean. But we're really not in the tropics any more!
Transatlantic, Bluewater, Offshore,
April/May 2023,
Vancouver 34C sailboat, crew of two
This is peak recording. No women in bikinis, no music. Just vlog and breathtaking views compiled in 1 video
Steve is the sort of crew everybody wants on offshore passages! Unflappable and with an excellent sense of humour! I've always found that the right crew can make or break any passage!
I like Steve 🎉 . Cooks with a sense of humour ! Can’t faze him . Pleasant . Id have him on any trip
Like Sam Holmes Sailing. Always happy no matter happens
I was about to say the same thing. Steve would make things go by quickly, he seems hella chill
Best and funniest sailing video I've seen so far! Thanks for sharing your experiences and the laughs
This is by far the best sailing video I have ever watched. It feels real. Great video, audio and attitude😁 No constant half naked women is a real plus. I am a woman but want to see sailing for goodness sakes. You are hitting it right out of the park!!! Fantastic! Just subscribed! ⛵️🌊🐳
Also I am appreciating the lack of music, just the sounds of the sea and the boat. Of all the utube sailing channels I have watched this is the first one that reminds me directly of my experiences crossing oceans. Reading a real book!
Like the sights and sound of real sailing, no music is nice, great guys . There is a different feeling to this channel but I can't describe it. Well done 👍
Thank you. Whatever that intangible 'feeling' about it is, I'm glad it works for you😊
@@theoddvoyage The pressure of materialism diminishes away from land-unless, that feeling is shattered by music or some other disturbance..
Great camerawork and oh so dry humour, well done lads let's have some more.
Thank you😄
Yes ty for the absolutely infamous dry humor. Very needed today!.!
Very nice video. I am preparing myself and boat to cross Atlantic soon. Hope to have good weather!
Fair winds!
Having good attitudes can make all the difference during long passages. You both were great! Safe travels ❤
After 30 years of power boating I finally get what sail boats are all about! I am loving the trip on my 65" TV 👍
So are you tempted? 😄
You guys Are actually showing how it is to cross the ocean…not like many other sailing channels where it is all Calm Blue Water and delfins…Lovely video 👍
thank you
The Sailing Brothers, and Adventures of an Old Sea Dog are really worth the watch too.
@@coffee6783 yes 🤩 they Are also on my Watch list
My sentiments entirely - finally, someone showing what it's really like crossing the Atlantic.....if you thought Jenga would be hard to play, I wonder if darts would be as difficult😎
Plenty of other great sailing channels out there. Great video
I’ve never been more aware of my extreme levels of high anxiety as I watch this. Sailing very clearly requires a calm demeanor! Love watching marine channels, as they take me places I’ll never physically see
That Steve , appears to be just the sort of person to have on a passage like this . He sounds like a right character .
Yes - totally dependable and mighty entertaining
Steve seems like a pleasant sailing companion! The guy cooks and does the fishing!
The Sea is always out to get you...often feeling personal at times.
What most people don't understand is the amount of courage it takes to take to the open Sea.
Enjoyed watching.
Awe and respect for the Ocean is .preceded by knowledge and experience .
As a few others have said, I really appreciate that I was able to watch this without that annoying music other utubers always add. Im not sure why they do that, but its one of my biggest peeves. It was so nice just listening to the waves, and made it feel more real, if that makes any sense?😊
2 lovers that also love the sea, it doesn't get better than this.
Looking forward to reading Steve's first book.
I Like how you blokes are in tune with the boat and the elements ~ unlike so many that are totally reliant on electronic gizmos, but cannot "feel" what's happening
Lol...setting your clock according to dawn and breakfast, reminds me of Churchill's habit of traveling by "stomach time."
"I just don't know what to wear." Always the biggest problem on an a transat. After making tea.
15:22 - "...we're doing about 7 knots." "...yeah, good - but are we going in the right direction?!" LOL - priceless sailor dialog.
WEATHER HAPPENS - it doesn't wait for you nor ask for your permission... as you have experienced. :0/
Both of your attitudes are so perfect. You roll with the punches and the waves! Taking it all in stride with a sense of humour. Welll done, and safe passage to you!
Just found this channel. These guys are funny unlike other sailing channels who continuously enlighten us with their existential drivel
So enjoyed your journey. Two competent sailors.. So enjoyed your journey. Two competent sailors..
TOV, That was incredible upload, just incredible. Thank you for including all of us aboard. I've never seen a man hug a mast with such content and authenticity. It looked for a moment like it was actually hugging you back. A man and his boat had a moment.😃
thanks Chris😁
I am pressing thumbs, Steve, that you keep your humor and need still more than throwing shells through triangles to keep your mind sufficently occupied. Very intersting commentary. And nice work-split. Skipper more concerned, Crew more relaxed. Opposite would let the skipper stay in deeper sleep during the night, but I think you managed it. - although 14minutes still to come. Very refreshing content. Chap haut!
Your collective calm and positive demeanor is beautiful and confidence inspiring. Thank you for that and for sharing your journey.
Kind, thank you!
Educational, thank you good effort
Thank you!
That view from the mast. Blimey 😵
Very good footage of calm, resilient, salty sailors on a good boat. Thanks.
thank you
OMG, this brings back memories! Great crew! I was out to sea with my husband and 2 children. My husband yelled and panicked often. He was awful as crew...lol
No, I divorced him...lol
Proper saling guys.👍👍👍
Nice passage! All the "things" that happened make it great right. Nice job with the flag Steve!
Big thumbs up !...
Thanks Michael!
Steve, the perfect crew.
Nice and chilled out upload. Enjoyed it immensely. 2 blokes having a bit of a sail, you wouldn't even think you both were in the middle of the Atlantic.
Just a sequence of regular days out on the water, all squashed together
Totally enjoyable
I really enjoyed your video. Well done. Thank you
So enjoyed your journey. Two competent sailors.
Thanks Mary!
Great video! Well done, informative and exciting to watch! Loss of engine power, gale force winds, rain storms, high seas, hitting a whale, and all along you two are so calm and under control. Thank you for sharing!
thank you - glad you liked it!
Great video. Steve is hilarious 😂 loving the positivity ❤
I watch a few sailing videos. I am not a sailor but this is so good to watch. Really enjoyed it thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another cracking video thanks for posting
Onboard I always keep to UTC.
Thank you!
And I think you're right, UTC would be more logical. Secretly, the tiny display on our VHF is always UTC, just so I don't lose my grip on reality!
My ex husband wanted to live at sea and raise our children there. I said only when they invent the hamster-wheel-child-on- board-exercizer! Thanks for the real deal. Quite exiting. The running winds are the most fun, aren't they? You're humor is wonderful. Next clickbait title..Caught no fish. Loook.. dolphins!Take care. New subscription.
Thank you. You're right about the hamster wheel
@@theoddvoyage Aye. I was. More sailing?
@@karenatha7890 Soon!
Thank you for a very enjoyable 37 mins, you captured sailing across an ocean, and I'd be happy to crew ( or have you two as crew) on any upcoming trip. Paul SF bay, Alubat Ovni 56
Thank you - and very kind - there's an offer I'm not going to get every day! Ovni - fantastic boat
So very cool. My brother used to run yachts back and forth from the Caribbean... some insane passages! Bermuda saved the day more than once. Nice to have that beautiful odd little island off the East Coast. I'm sure it has spelled both doom and salvation to many a mariner. You are living the dream, gentlemen. Am I jealous? A resounding YES!
Fair winds and steady as she goes (with an engine and spare parts, please!) 💖⛵
thank you!
that looks awesome. I'm envious.
Enjoyed it guys. Keep the sense of humor up👍🏼
I realy enjoyed your vid!!!!
Keep it up!!
Thumb+subscription....
Enjoyed your crossing. Reminded me so much of our crossing in 1989. Luckily we had sunny weather. Thanks for a memory boost.
As someone who loves to sail, this was pure joy to watch! And such a handsome skipper and crew. Well done.
Exalint informative entertainment video 📹
Nice trip, beautiful boat! Well done guyyys.
Best analysis of the Atlantic Ocean I've heard yet
thank you!
Excellent, thanks.
you guys are great .. thanks for sharing !
Just now finding your channel! Love it feels like we are right there with you. Thanks
Great great sailing vlog ❤❤
great vlog, a joy to watch…glad you had a bunch of guardianangels with you on this passage
😊
Your living the dream guys. Nice job.
Well done, the Click bait worked and now I have another channel to watch😂 - very good filmed and edited- especially the Slow motion of waves! … and you‘re enjoying tea
Great film, thanks
I really enjoyed this video. It is my first time watching your channel and I plan to go back and watch them all. I hope you start filming again as your content is enjoyable and educational as well. Thank you for taking the time and effort to create and post this.
Fantastic video. As someone saving up and learning how to sail to buy a boat, it’s great to see the mindset when things go wrong.
😊
As a 24/7 carer I often daydream of adventures, the Canadian Rockies, the Grand Canyon or sailing across the Atlantic! I think I got pretty close to the latter after I watched your video.
Thank you I enjoyed it, a life on the Ocean waves! Tremendous!
24/7 care has to be a really tough road. Nice to hear that RUclips can get you out a little
@@theoddvoyage Thanks, means a lot.
U tube is a god send for carers . I ve been there 👍
Awesome journey !!!
Excellent video!
119th LIKE clicked; 2,372nd desktop tag-along view happening. 31:07 - "OH!! - dolphins!!" (seaman's version of "OH LOOK!! A squirrel!!").
so right
"So we're having fish for dinner, right?"
"Eggz actually".
Damnit, you're right. That IS what he meant 🤣
The lack of noise down below while sailing in gale force conditions is a testament to the quality of your yacht.
It was a little uncanny. I did wonder if it could make us careless - you could almost pretend there was nothing to keep on top of, back up on deck
It’s definitely NOT a yacht, it’s just a boat
@@kenttegneskog The definition of “yacht”‘is subjective. This Vancouver 34 looks like a fine little yacht to me.
@@TheCorsair not it’s not subjective, and to call that boat is the same to call an apartment for mansion. Look it up, what a yacht is.
That little boat is about 30 foot and a yacht need too be at-least 75-100 foot. Look it up….
(my comment after his beginning comment) Steve is funny & smart !
Really interesting video…… thanks for sharing, subscribed.
Excellent episode. What an adventure.
thanks Joel!
Totally loved your video. ❤
thank you!
Great video. Really enjoyed that crossing - looking forward to the next installment!
thank you!
Some time since I visited this place. Love how you present your days onboard. Calm, friendly and nice. I'll be back. Tank you!
Enjoyed that, thanks!
😊
Adore your videos, plz make more... very raw, autobiographical, no voice overs and background music… just sounds of the waves & wind creaking of the ship, speaking to the cam, I feel like I’m am there. Reminds me of Sam Holmes Sailing, bravo🥂
Thank you - more coming before winter sets in, time and weather permitting...
Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed the video.
Thanks Dawn 👍
What excellent videos you produce for us. Always look forward to them. Many thanks.
Thanks John
Fantastic thank you. Great calm skippering, (and crew), great commentary.
Thanks Markus!
Burning out a starter motor and losing all engine power a few days into an Atlantic crossing, I would have returned and repaired the engine. Imagine being becalmed with a ship bearing down, or running aground on the Azores due to hurricane force winds. Disasters are usually the result of a number of small contributing factors.
Great ocean photography, well sailed.
I agree with your point - a return might just have been more prudent. But for me the primary concern was entering port, which had to happen once either way. Either behind us in Bermuda or ahead of us in the Azores. The Bermuda reefs and narrow entrance to St George's felt like a risky option, and I saw from the pilot book that our target in the Azores was easier to enter and could offer tows. If we had to continue past the Azores for weather, there were a lot of follow-up options as we were prepared to stay out much longer.
And you're right about the cascade of smaller things creating larger issues. We were just lucky that none of our separate issues cascaded.
Great video.
Nice 👍⛵
Thanks for taking us along.
You're welcome - thank you
Great upload. Saw the first one. )
i have enjoyed every second of this, good job.
thanks Omar!
@The Odd Voyage thank you, keep it up, i hope your channel prosper. You obviously enjoy what you're doing.
*Fold the ends in when rolling a tortilla. It makes for a less messy experience when eating onboard a rocking boat.*
Throwing some "The doors" lyrics. My kind of guy right there. One day id love to be able to have adventures like this. Until then im thankful for wonderfully edited videos like you have here. Much love and safe voyages
that's kind - thank you!
For some reason, the waves look almost realistic in your footage! Well done!
thank you!
nice sailing.
Enjoyed the footage of your passage and the boat in those conditions,Robert B Harris designed great Boats..Thanks!
thank you!
Great adventure guys... well done. Dolphins are just BEAUTIFUL!! Thank you for that amazing footage!!
That captain was cool as a cucumber 😅
Hello sailors this is a great reportage of your trip to my island. Good seamanship, right decisions and a great speed. - I sail a Contest 38s Ketch myself. And in such conditions I appreciate the mizzen, which gives more stability in the direction of cruise. What happened to you with the Hydrovane fortunately does not happen with my Windpilot Pacific. Well I have chosen this equipment. I hope this is not the last video from you. Have a good trip, good wind all the time.
That's a great looking boat, Thomas!
Hydrovane customer service has been great. I think the problem is mine as the skipper - the part that came loose has suffered in the sunshine for 7 years and just needed replacing sooner. I should have gone over the whole system before we left.
Just twigged you've both been on this incredible adventure! Legends!! Lovely to see you both again after all these years..🥰 Looking forward to watching from the beginning..way better than a Netflix doco
It's not all with Steve. Wouldn't that be too much of a good thing?
@@theoddvoyage Ah yes it certainly would!! Now I'm really curious & dying to start from the beginning..no spoilers! 😁
🤐
That looks horrendous but strangely appealing, I’ll never do it, but would kinda like to? I’ll stick with my motorboat and the sight of land at all times. Stay safe.
"horrendous but strangely appealing" is a great phrase 😁
Hahaha..I like him!!😂
Great content guys
