The reason why companies use plastic hoods besides cost efficiency is to try to prevent damage to the lens. If you drop your camera on the lens, chances are that your metal hood will damage the front end, potentially altering the thread and maybe the lens itself.
I have this Viltrox lens. I think it's great. If you go into the A7iv menu under Lens Compensation, there is a setting called Shading Comp. Which is meant for compensating for vignetting. It's on Auto by default. Which may explain why I don't notice the vignetting with the Viltrox. Unless your subject matter is on the sides, then I don't think most viewers would notice it. Esp. with the Shading Comp enabled. At least my eyes are not drawn to it. I've shot a lot with this lens, and I'm not really drawn to any vignetting.
I'm really happy with my Sigma 24 1.4 Art lens, The Only downside with it is the WEIGHT! other than that the sharpness and autofocus are really good! I wish sigma releases a DG DN version of this 24mm art lens like their new 85mm DG GN version
Hi Jason, new-ish subscriber here! You mentioned the APSC version of this lens and I was wondering if you meant the 23mm f1.4 for APSC E-mount? If you have (or have used) this lens do you have any thoughts on it? I have the a6400, so although I generally enjoy your content, I'm always tuned in when you have APSC content. CHEERS!
Thanks for the vid Jason. I got this along with my a7iv as well. Aside from the strong vignetting, I actually really love the rendering of this combo. 🙂 I do want to point out some “issues” I’m having when trying to update the firmware. It does the update correctly in the lens when plugged into my macbook, but when plugged into the a7iv, it would not recognize the lens correctly (would go to manual mode and no aperture settings are transmitted back). I had to do some firmware gymnastics to try to get it recognized again by the camera. I’ve reached out to viltrox about it to report this. Right now, the lens is at v1.0.4, but the camera would detect it at v1.0. 🤷🏻♂️
I had a chance to use the GM lens for a while, and absolutely loved it. But I’m just curious to see the comparison with the Samyang as well as the new Sigma 24 f/2
I just got this, partly based on your video, but it says the lens is not supported and i cant use autofocus. Have you noticed same issue? I have the FX3
I want the 20 mm 1.8 g lens so bad for 2 years now. But since im a single father with a heart condition..work and money has been hard. So i just sit back and watch videos on it hoping one day it will be mine
Awesome video as always, I had a question, do you have any videos on video editing software you use. I really live the color you have on your videos. I've been using my Sony A7IV and currently use Wondershare Filmora 11 Beta which I've been giving a TON of feedback to the company about it VS Filmora X that I used to use. I got a Windows 10 64 Bit PC with 64GB Of RAM it's an Intel i9-9980hk 2.4GHz PC and I have a 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus NVME with all the programs and Operating system and a 4TB Samsung 870 Evo SSD for my Storage and finally a Nvidia GeForce RTX-3080 FE Graphics Card. I tried using DaVinci Resolve 17 and it was making all my videos look very choppy and hot confused as the software said that my PC specs work perfectly for their software. The reason I want to try something else is because eith Wondershare Filmora 11 they have cheap limited looking LUT's and their color grading/ Adjustments are very poorly made. Anyways thank you so much again for taking the time to make this video. 🙇♂️🙏
I would pick it up if I didn’t have the 20 1.8. I have active stabilization usually set so it crops in at 22mm or so, sooooo it’s to close for me. Glad their are more and more options becoming available.
I went from 1 Camera and 3 lenses for 7 years to adding the A7IV and 3 lenses in the last two weeks. Damn RUclips. Hey I saved for 20 years and you can't take it with you when you're dead.
Have it. Stop working six weeks out of the box. (electronic aperture interface with the ring on the barrel). Viltrox does not want to honor their warranty. Don’t buy it.
Would you take the Viltrox 24 1.8 for $200 dollars or the samyang 24 1.8 for $407? Those are the prices I see rn, I feel like even if the samyang is better it’s not 2x better

thanks a lot, this is a big help..
I just picked this up for $250 USD on sale. Winning!

that's what discourages me from getting a Sigma..
Wich one should i pick, samyang 24 f1.8 or viltrox 24mm f1.8?
I love the Gm 24 but I'd like to have a 24 that I can take anywhere and not worry about it... I'll be grabbing this.
Nice video, now curious to know your view on Samyang AF 24 f/1.8 FE.
Bro 🖐🏻 nice lens!!! But what shoot do you recommend this lens ?

Thanks for that heads up about the firmware. I think I'll keep my Viltrox at v1.0 until further notice. Cheers.
Look at the Samyang. It is superb, sharper than the G Master and has Infinity Focus button

Love my Viltrox 24 1.8!
Both viltrox 23 (apsc) and 24 (FF) are pretty much on the same price point
Is the FF lens better over the apsc on an apsc body?
Thanks 🙏 for your time, nice one!
Great video mate. Love that you bring these lenses review at affordable price and tell the truth if it is usable or not. Stay safe and take care.
Hi Jason, which one is bigger sigma 30mm or viltrox 24mm?
I want the 20 mm 1.8 g lens so bad for 2 years now. But since im a single father with a heart condition..work and money has been hard. So i just sit back and watch videos on it hoping one day it will be mine
Would the parrot pad caster teleprompter fit on this lense do you know?

I have it! I love it.
This is the next lens in going to buy
Samyang 24MM F1.8 is very good and light weight with better AF
I would pick it up if I didn’t have the 20 1.8. I have active stabilization usually set so it crops in at 22mm or so, sooooo it’s to close for me. Glad their are more and more options becoming available.
I want that lens soooooooooo bad. Ugh
Nice, mate. Might just have to pick one up for the a9.
You will love it
Thank you
I have the sanding 24mm 1.8 nice lens
Might want to test the Sigma 24mm F2. It's a few hundred more, but built way better and prob sharper too.
Just picked it up on sale for $249 US.....because why not?
I went from 1 Camera and 3 lenses for 7 years to adding the A7IV and 3 lenses in the last two weeks. Damn RUclips. Hey I saved for 20 years and you can't take it with you when you're dead.
Yup , live the moment
Samyang 24mm 1.8!
I don't need it. I can do all I need to do with the 20mm 1.8 and 35mm 1.4. What I need is a good 85mm.
The Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 is actually really good. It largely outperforms and outresolves the Sony and costs far less.
Have it. Stop working six weeks out of the box. (electronic aperture interface with the ring on the barrel). Viltrox does not want to honor their warranty. Don’t buy it.
Forget it Sony's 24mm.f / 1.4 is the best no doubt about it ! ! !
The Samyang is better in every way - better bokeh, less CA, sharper, better AF and so on. The GM completely outclasses both. This is no GM killer LOL!
Yes I agree, samyang 24mm 1.8 is way better than viltrox
Samyang 24 1.8 kills the Viltrox.
Would you take the Viltrox 24 1.8 for $200 dollars or the samyang 24 1.8 for $407? Those are the prices I see rn, I feel like even if the samyang is better it’s not 2x better
The samyang is better
