P1: Royal Enfield Himalayan - Seattle, WA to Alaska

  • Follow along as I purchase a Royal Enfield Himalayan in Seattle, Washington and ride it for the first time EVER all the way back to Alaska. I even do some customizing to the bike along the way!
    This is the first part of a series of videos covering my purchase of the 2018 Royal Enfield Himalayan Himalayan, customizing the bike and exhaust with Cerakote Ceramic after only 300 miles, doing my first service, then continuing on through Banf National Park, Jasper National Park, the Canada Yukon and Alaska where I stopped at a magnificent glacier before arriving home.
    The Royal Enfield Himalayan is a 411cc adventure bike built in Indian and made available in the U.S. for the first time in 2018. Very few motorcyclists in the U.S. have had the experience of riding one let alone taking it for a near 3000-mile ride right from the showroom floor.
    IN THIS MOTORCYCLE SERIES
    ○ At only 411cc's, how does it handle on American highways?
    ○ What's involved with the first service at 300 miles?
    ○ Can it hold up on a long-distance adventure?
    ○ Is it comfortable, capable, and does it handle well?
    ○ How does the bike look after a ceramic coating of the exhaust, skid plate and levers?
    ○ And what sort of scenery, wildlife and adventures do I experience on my 2,800-mile ride back to Alaska?
    I hope you enjoy this series. Please LIKE & SUBSCRIBE for the following parts ( They are shorter, I promise! ☺ ) and future Himalayan adventures in Alaska.

I think anyone cutting back on the oversized bikes and getting back to basics on a lighter machine that can go anywhere... has their head on straight. And at 64 you have plenty of years to pack in more adventures. Glad to see you're considering staying on two wheel, although by the looks of your channel you've had that covered with mountain-biking.

      @@sarahdell4042 tell me about it! Even the Himalayan is a bit taller than I thought. With my touring boots I'm basically touching with toes, but that works fine because the bike feels light to me. A slight shift on the seat and I've got one foot flat. I'll be investing in more rugged, off-road boots with thicker soles and that should help. Being an off-road bike and needing more clearance, I have not plans for lowering.
      Now road racing, that must be a thrill. I don't think I'll ever have the experience of doing that. At best I may do a track day... someday. So hats off to you for road racing! 🏍

      KARMAkaze Moto I usually find myself riding solo, so my fear is always not being able to pick a street based bike up. Recently acquired a 250L, and it’s light enough that I can pick it up once or twice by myself.
      In my very early 30s, but dialing things back. New bikes are way too fast, and recovering takes longer! :(

    One quick tip I'll add is to always turn off the bike using the ignition key rather than the kill switch. With the always on headlights it's quite easy to forget that the lights are still on which may end up draining battery.

    I visited Triumph of Seattle today and sat on one of the Himalayans. Great folks there and their prices on gear are hard to beat! I'm looking forward to hearing your insights about its freeway manners. That's the only issue that is keeping me from buying one. Living in West Seattle it is hard to get to the Cascades without having to do miles on the freeway. As long as I can do 70-75 mph on a loaded bike, then I'm okay. Otherwise, I fear buyer's remorse. Overselling to the customer starts at the bike manufacturer Look at BMW's bikes displacement numbers going up 50cc to 1250's when the 1200 was to big all you need in an adventure bike is as much as 50 horse power. You need a bike Light enough even if your injured to pick up alone after laying it down. Try lifting a dropped bmw 1250 with a sprained ankle or injured shoulder after a drop. A Smaller bikes makes it easier for one to self rescue

      Totally dependent on location of ones trip and wants, I have a older GS 1100 that is well sorted and I take absolute liberties with it off road, if you are single tracking trough a mountain range then certainly smaller is better, If you are riding London to Bangkok I want the extra horse power and size for the longer sections and even on Fire roads a larger bike is absolutely fine, the thing that buggered current ADV bikes is the amount of crap they now have installed that can go wrong and the build quality of some crash prone parts, I would not be to expectant of picking up a dropped current gen Honda AT and jumping straight on and going like I have many times with my old Bimmer, in fact there is a guy on YT that crashed one on a test ride and absolutely buggered the thing with a minor off road drop. I have owned DRZs XR you name it and I certainly would not want to tour at highway speeds for any length of time with one of them. For me an adventure bike must be ok off road whilst still being compliant doing 500miles on road. If someone like URAL could reproduce a R100GS type bike with a basic setup without ABS and all the other shite that would be perfect, something easy to work on, reliable Boxer engine and good both on and off road...

      I have a mid 90's Aprilia Pegaso (and have previously owned the Suzuki XF650), it's an amazing bike, but big singles over long distances can tire you out..
      My mate has a Transalp, and the difference when covering even 50 miles of high-ish speed boring tarmac.
      For most dirt stuff, I use an old DR350, but the Pegaso has done a good amount of trails - been getting more and more difficult as I am less worried about killing the bike - and it's been surprisingly good at them.
      I still think the Suzuki did it better though.

    Wow love the way RE Himalayan is getting recognition outside India. Hope you come to visit Leh Ladakh someday and ride across the Himalayas with the RE Himalayan.

    It's a great looking bike, very rugged but not ugly, decent torque and the best thing is probably the price. Very tempted to get one as my first proper bike

      @@KARMAkazeMoto I can't decide which Royal Enfield to go for. In the UK the Meteor 350 is more affordable in the used market and at the moment that's my preference. But so many good options, the 650s and the 350s and the Himalayan as well as the new Scram. But I'll definitely be a Royal Enfield.

    An interesting trip idea though, touring a bike to get it customized. Just like a video game. It's self-rewarding :)

    • @KARMAkazeMoto
      @KARMAkazeMoto  5 лет назад

      My trip was a little different than that. I did not go on a tour to get it customized. I was on tour to take the bike from the dealership to my home in Alaska. I only stopped along the way to have the work done. But I did not have to do that, so you are a little bit correct. :)
      Actually the place where I stopped for the custom work was exactly 300 miles. I had to do the first engine service, so it worked out perfect!

    Hi Justin, I am here because of Noraly and Itchy boots. She recommended your channel and guess what I really liked your vlog. I live in India and I used to see Himalayan all the time but never paid any attention till I started watching Noraly and now Himalayan is my favourite just because it looks completely different from all the other bikes sold in India. Different in a positive way 😁

    Well, it's a Himalayan, people actually take it on treks on to the highest and worst roads on the planets, the Himalayan was given probably for the same reason.

    Royal Enfield recommends driving below 60 kms/hr for first 500 kms for better performance of engine

    • @KARMAkazeMoto
      @KARMAkazeMoto  5 лет назад +2

      I agree, people should follow the RE recommendations for break-in period. I'm not sure it has as much to do with performance as it does longevity, but they can be one in the same. Thanks MP!
