Zoo Med Laboratories is one of the most well-known reptile product brands on the market. In 1993, Zoo Med created and launched the first-ever reptile-specific UVB lamp and has since been an industry leader in reptile lighting, enclosures, and more. In this episode, we chat with Zoo Med’s Animal Care and Education Director, Ashley, as well as Andrew who is Zoo Med’s Research and Development - Hardware Division. Throughout the conversation, we cover Zoo Med history, the evolution of UV lamp technology, LED UV lights, as well as new Zoo Med products that are due to launch later this year.
I also want to give a special thanks to a few other Zoo Med team members that helped make this episode possible:
Miranda, Zoo Med’s Food and Regulatory Specialist
    Sam, Zoo Med’s R & D / Customer Service / Animal Care Specialist
Davy Zoo Med Director of New Media

That was a great question about the differences between aquaria lighting vs reptile industry lighting products. The answer surprised me at first but makes complete sense.
One of those big-box pet stores near me re-organized their store and put the sparse reptile heating/lighting/temperature control section right next to the aquarium lighting and heaters. Yeah, pretty obvious now.

Glad you asked about those odd products that really shouldn't be out there. To me, they side stepped and gave odd edge cases but appreciate you pushing the envelope.

Yeah, I’m always mystified by those products. Like I said, in the interview, most of the brands do it!

    • @Juicecarton97
      @Juicecarton97 Год назад

I think it’s because they have sold well in the past and continue to sell because of misinformation. Realistically most sales for red bulbs are people using as a primary heat source for nocturnal animals because they’re told that’s what’s needed. If you want to see things in the evening then use a moon-like led not a heat and light emitting bulb.

Interesting that it wasn’t mentioned that Zoo Med markets their “Power Sun UV” (Mercury Vapor) as an “all in one bulb” even though I tell my customers not to rely on them for a sole heat/UVA/UVB source.. I’ve seen other companies do this with the same product and it’s extremely misleading for beginners..

Great point! I did not realize that bulb was marketed that way. Thanks for watching, Matt!

Very interested in listening, everyone knows zoomed and since i only entered reptiles the past few years i have just considered them the staple mid quality but consistent brand. Their brand practices of consistency and affordability have probably helped a lot of animals, but I rarely see them adopt new keeping technology until it is both affordable and proven positive in the hobby. Which seems like a good strategy but always prevents me from buying their products due to wanting the newest keeping technologies.

I Bought a Zoo Med 10.0 desert light and I bought the Zoo Med light fixture that it is to go in and it is just a hair off fitting the prongs. I don't know if the light was improperly made and the prongs are too long. So I don't know what to do

I use a Phillips HUE to simulate sun rise/set before the halogen comes on and after that the LED plant light and the UVB.

Yep, I did the exact same for years! Worked out really well (it was only a pain on the odd occasion I would loose internet, i.e., the bulb would turn on a full power regardless of time)

@@Orpheus422 definitely use reds in dusk and dawn. You can certainly transition to a higher colour temperature for mid-day but likely your other lights (UV, LED if you use them) will overpower the single HUE light bulb anyway.

@@Orpheus422 the light is ambient. And is set to be the most colorful as it can be. So it’s little orange. I do this cause much more full spectrum turns on after the sunset and sunrise

1:01:15 so if thats the case.. why even bother to make the lamp heated? Just a plain red light, that way customers dont get the wrong idea... Or they could even write it on the box. Even better. I work at a Pet store and i constantly have to argue with people about this. They go.. "why are you telling me this wrong when this big company says its fine". If zoomed reads this, please change the box to represent your opinion on this. It shouldn't be that hard to change the print and doesn't involve creating a whole new product like i mentioned above. Idk, as a pet store employee, its super frustrating and it feels like these big companies don't listen, so what am I supposed to do? I've reached out to management and corporate at the company i work at, sent emails to zoomed, and even commenting on a youtube video about the subject.
1:16:06 and just put the blame on me, the pet store employee.. who did the reseach. This is what im talking about.
