I just want to add a note for people in the reptile industry, the aversion to using veterinarians. I am a firm believer in providing good veterinary care for all of your areas. And I'm glad you all have those resources in Canada! But here in the states, ESPECIALLY the midwest, vets who claim to be exotic specialists are few and far between and sadly, I have yet to find one who even has basic husbandry knowledge after visiting 6 of these vets all over Missouri and Kansas. I was scolded for not feeding my chuckwalla pinkie mice (they are herbivores after their juvenile stage) by one and quoted $1,700 for any basic diagnostics on him.
I just wanted to open people's eyes on the actual resources some of us have available. I believe it's better on the coasts like California and Florida/Georgia, but please don't look down on people for expecting these ridiculous things from veterinarians when, in reality, a lot of us are trying to provide the best we can with this as our reality.

@Reptiliatus Interestingly but also logically, the ideal environment that you describe for Uroplatus geckos I immediately recognized as preferred for many orchid species. Orchids don’t really like to be in any kind of overly wet substrate or lacking ventilation enough that their roots are constantly wet. They end up rotting. Madagascar has the most diverse orchid flora in the world and over 1,000 species. I’m sure there’s an amazing Venn diagram here but, alas, I have no personal interest in Uroplatus, just in orchids. 😊

Another excellent interview Dillon! I use to breed mountain horned dragons and collard lizards both of which are mostly in the trade as wild caught and considered by distributors as "cheap lizards." They make excellent pets when healthy and socialized and thats why I wanted to see more of an effort in captive breeding. I was considering starting a collard lizard project again but the problem is now I'm noticing alot more people producing them and they are selling them for like $300 compared to wc specimens that go for $25-$50. Back when I was working with them another well know guy sold his cbb for $80 and that makes sense. Being a hobby i wouldn't want to jack prices up to what they are now but I also wouldn't want to undercut people who are super into these projects either.
On another note you guys briefly mentioned FB flagging. I stopped taking in beardies because marketplace kept taking down my ads for rehoming them. Saying you can't sell animals and its against guidelines. I literally wrote "free" all over the ads. Its a shame because so many people neglect them and give them away, so I take them in, nurse them to good health, then when ready I rehome them. When I make ads that say free, clean fecal test, and my only ask is that when inquiring you must show me a pic of an enclosure ready to put the animal in its amazing how many people show interest and want the animal. Marketplace being everyone's first go to spot to look for things makes it a perfect platform for adoption but the algorithm stops it from being possible.

Hell yea Reptiliatus is awesome I’ve been watching him for long time now and love his videos and how passionate he is about the hobby. I’ve got a couple pairs of Savannah monitors and my whole goal with them is breeding them to try and stop the wild collection of them. There my favorite monitor species and I’ve finally became one of the few to successfully breed them and get eggs intentionally and now have 85 eggs in my incubator right now and 1st clutch will be hatching soon and it’s only taken over 20 years of working with this species and definitely learned a lot and still continue to learn from these amazing monitors. But on another note it’s crazy we have the same childhood loving dinosaurs 🦖 and reptiles and so greatfull to have such a supportive family 🙏🏼 . He’s definitely a great figure in the reptile hobby and it’s definitely addictive breeding reptiles but like you said it’s important to breed reptiles that are mainly wild caught so are wild animals can stay wild 🤘🏻

Omg I've seen the chinese crocodile lizards for €800/pair in a store in the netherlands
They looked quite healthy but I found them quite expensive
I didn't know they were special and rare untill I did a google search while looking at them in the store
but I was very aware that I wasn't yet experienced enough and having just been made aware of their existence, I didn't know nearly enough to keep them
If I had known that a (tegu and black dragon) breeder I know, who also has experience with caiman lizards and sailfin dragons, had been looking for them for years already I'd've contacted them without a doubt
Who knows where those lizards are now
I really love what Dayyan is doing. The way that he does things is very inspirational and really motivates me (and I hope many others) to think of things differently.

This was fantastic! Thanks so much! It's funny, at 11 yrs, I had a terrarium with 2 Anoles and a couple tiny painted turtles, about silver dollar sized. I had very rich garden soil in it, a bowl lined wuth small, flat rocks, a log and some manzanita branches, a standard hood-light on top, over a mesh-screen top.
That was over 60 years ago...before the words 'scaping an enclosure' were coined!
At 13, I had over a dozen tropical fish tanks & raised Corydoras, Betas, Angelfish, etc. At 19, I married a guy who kept wild-caught (we didn't know better) tarantulas, scorpions, kangaroo mice and shrews, as well as kingsnakes, rattlesnakes, ringnecked and long-nosed snakes, and several other Colubrids and a good sized Rosy Boa. Oh, and a tortoise we picked up in the Mojave Desert.
Sadly, after all that, the only pets I have are a couple littermate sisters from a Pekingese/Min.Poodle cross and a Shih Tzu.
    I call them 'PekaPooTzus'.
No reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, or isopods.
So I live vicariously through the wonderful Vlogs of Dayyon and a few others. And now I've found yours!
Thanks for a GREAT last hour!!!

I think Dion's approach is exactly what is needed in the industry as we move forward. I was trying alot of this during the early 90s-mid 90s but unfortunately found alot of people only concerned with the cash end of breeding and not establishing a captive population of gene pool. Alot of backstabbing and not alot of willingness to share information. I was very fortunate to meet n speak with some great pioneers in my opinion. Bob Mailloux Sandfire Dragon Ranch, Philippe Vos Joli, Trooper Walsh of Dallas Zoo, Mark Shea, as well as Kevin McCurly at Nerd ( Great guy always willing to help. But to many people only cared about how much the next unproven ball python morph may sell for. For every Brian Barczyk and Kevin or Ron St. Pierre, I would find 3 greedy, egomaniacs who only wanted to make fast cash. Totally discouraged me and by '01, I gave up on my passion unfortunately. I'm glad to see the positive changes in the industry as of recently.

I love this discussion of terminology. Looking at this diction, I think another reason "exotic" is slightly problematic is due to the western association of the word exotic with the non-western world. It has a pretty racist history of "othering" and objectifying/fetishizing cultures that do not fit the white, western standards. Although we can't be "racist" against animals, it's interesting to note that when we think of the word "exotic", those same associations still hold: we think of exotic animals as animals from non-western countries, and it ties in that sense of mystical lands elsewhere (again that feeling of "other"). This could be part of why so many people in the US find garter snakes, bull snakes, and other native species to be boring. Are these exotic species or not? With the history of the word, it is hard to determine. However, all reptiles from all areas of the world can be grouped as "specialty" species, thus disregarding our western-centric viewpoint. Hopefully, this made sense, I'm done with my college general education classes so haven't done proper word analysis for a year or so but it's always interesting to take a look at. I'm sure someone with a better understanding of anthropology could do an excellent analysis on this topic, I might have to ask my roommate about it.
