    Hands down the best take off video on RUclips from Chicago! Love that it's all the way from the initial turn and roll, to the point where the captain turns off the seat belt sign.

    Great video. Amazing to watch the wing flex. Not surprising given the full load and the length of flight.

    There are a few reasons for the great circle route. Distance is one thing as the girth of the earth is less the closer you are to the poles. So by flying in that direction you actually are flying less distance on certain routes.Winds aloft can also play into taking it up on a far north route. A strong jetstream current of say 140 MPH that flows from West to East can hammer an aircrafts fuel burn. So by flying further north of the jetstream, we can find winds significantly lighter.

    They didn't fly east. The route actually is somewhat strange but apparantly all pacific flights from the United States to Asia generally fly north and then head west. They took off to the east because that was the favored direction of the wind that day. They got over Lake Michigan and turned north, where they flew over mid-Canada and then banked northwest...at some point over the Pacific, probably near Russia, they made one last turn southwest and arrived in Shanghai.

    Just becuase they takeoff east doesn't mean they aren't allowed to turn west once airborne. Airplanes generally take off into the wind in order to lower the required takeoff speed.

    You can't compare the two. Each airplane is unique in its design. The 747 has a lot more power than the A340-300 because it is much larger and heavier.

    Thank is categorically incorrect. The term "heavy" means that the aircraft in question is above a certain weight class. The term "heavy" can be applied to a Boeing 757 that's heavy enough with passengers, cargo, and/or fuel. (transatlantic ETOPS capable).

    1. He could have set-up his climb for speed over climb meaning flap retraction occurs more quickly due to increased acceleration over quicker climb. 2. 747 'never' do 'anything' the same way... every day is different: temperature, altitude, wind direction/speed, passenger load, runway direction, obstacle clearance, flight duration, cruise altitude, speed over time cruise setting (cost index)... the list is quite long. No doubt this crew opted for (or required) accel. over altitude.

  • @ngb00
    @ngb00 14 лет назад

    @jfbenzl United will retire the 747-400 fleet because they're are already 15 years old, and they're becoming more and more inefficient, relative to newcomers such as B787 and A350. You can notice the fleet is aging since it needs servicing more frequently. I love 747s as well, but United's 747 cabin look dated and they do plan plan on upgrading/renovating the economy class since they're goin to be replaced soon.

  • @ElAl4ever
    @ElAl4ever 16 лет назад

    Most likely that is what the crew intended, but it could have been other reasons, such as needing to gain altitude because of storms over eastern Michigan etc...

  • @jetfreak4

    About when did you officially make another left turn to head southwest? Because in this video you were going northeast, due north, and then northwest and then for some reason made a right turn instead of the expected left....were you guys like circling the Chicago metro area before officially intercepting the course to Shanghai?

    What the hell are you talking about? I have Flight Simulator X and it shows the EXACT taxiways and runways that airplanes in real life use! FSX also uses real radio frequencies for the airports tower and ILS. Did the US Government ban FSX? No. Also, Flightaware shows so everything you need to know about a flight: altitude, speed, location, waypoints, etc...
