    The aesthetics of this house is on another level. The pond and recyclable woods are definitely my favourite point of this house.

    Wow having rain fall inside the house is next level. No need for 10 hours rain mood video playing on the background. Corious how the whole thing works during a thunder strom.

    The application of the sleepers is extraordinary. Kudos for the owner for bring back to life this old gem that could can be appreciated every step and way.
    The Balau log is a masterpiece in its full glory and purpose. And I like the raw exposed red bricks in the toilet, gives it a natural raw and unfinished look that tells you that we don't always need to fully cover up all the wall elements.

    It's a wonderful house, both aesthetically and ecologically.
    I have often wondered in a tropical climate like Malaysia, how would a thunderstorm affect the open air-well concept? Will it allow the residents to walk sheltered from the heavy rain floor to floor, or would it be expected to get a little wet along the way? Or would the air-well itself be in such a unique situation due to it's positioning that it is away from blistering wind in a thunderstorm, that rain just falls straight?
    Would love to hear the insights from the architect or Design Seed. Thanks!!

      I would love to know also. I've lived in S.E. Asia and can't imagine a hole in the roof during the wet season. Is there a sliding roof to close it up during a heavy storm? And what about mosquitoes? I absolutely love the design and applaud the reuse of old timber 👏👏👏 ... but that open airwell has me wanting to know more.

    • @yenchu1237
      @yenchu1237 3 года назад +22

      @@designunlimited6215 I lived in two houses with courtyard when I was young. This was a common design in the seventies. The area surrounding the courtyard will be wet from the rain. There is no sliding roof to cover it up. Both courtyard were used as a washing area (for handwashing clothes etc) and situated between hall and kitchen. I used to sit on the staircase beside the courtyard and watched the rain (not possible during strong wind + rain). The kitchen floor were cement and my mum would mop it dry after the rain. There were no protection against mosquitoes. I heard Pontianak's wailing from the trees outside the courtyard once.
      Recently, I viewed a few houses with courtyard and there are windows surrounding it; there was one house with a retractable sunroof. I'd opt for a sky window to let in the light.
      Much as I love the seamless outdoor/indoor concept, I'd opt for a well ventilated house with insect screen to keep the inside insects free.

    • @lsamoa
      @lsamoa 3 года назад +3

      I'm wondering the same thing, especially given that the staircase is located in that open area and is the only access to the other floors

    • @zuritazahri
      @zuritazahri 2 года назад +2

      I live in the Klang Valley in which we get rain almost daily, most days are heavy rain fall. Even when it rains and windy, I can keep my windows slightly open from my 22nd floor condominium and the rain falls straight down, and I do not have any awning over the windows. So I believe this design will work and it is the closest to what my ideal home would be.

    • @lsamoa
      @lsamoa 2 года назад +6

      @@zuritazahri There's significant difference between just leaving your windows slightly open during a storm, and having fwhole sections of the house that are fully open air though, especially if one of these is the only access you have to the top floor...

  • @shonabeggs4640
    @shonabeggs4640 Год назад

    Designer had such magnificent vision. He saw every aspect of where and when light would hit each area. Absolutely amazing. I love the mix of old wood and concrete. Not my style of house but I appreciate the architectural mastery of each and every inch. One part I would enjoy very much would be to lie on the indoor bridge feeling and hearing the raindrops. Wonderful, thank you.

    so inspiring me. as an architecture student I learned that this project tell us how to develop recycled materials in many parts of the house. The middle section (pond, void, skylight, and tree) is the core of this house. I can feel the comfort just looking from owner's interaction or just passing that area.

    like the kitchen and the use of the sleepers as art decor. So far amongst the designs with an open air well for terrace house this stood out as one of my favs.
    Some questions:
    a) Apart from the sleepers what other recycled materials were used?
    b) Besides energy conservation with the x ventilation, does the house practice any sustainable acts ie. rain water harvesting?
    c) Lastly my fav question is the management of mozzies..

    This house is aesthetically very pleasing --- clearly one of the most beautiful modern + recycled wood houses I have seen. Though, I can't help but wonder how well the open roof cope with monsoon, heavy storm or just rain during rainy season in general. And with all those metal elements in the house near the open roof, rust will be everywhere after some years, won't it? I hope the open roof comes equipped with mosquito net otherwise the tenants will surely catch Dengue fever. Lol

    That 8 meter log, repurposed from the old bridge is rich in history. Contemplate for a moment all that used it (and its twin). Simultaneously, this old timber lives up to the century old modernist ideal of spacial planes, unifying outside & inside. Seamless. Sturdy. Useful. The plan reveals Richard Tan's more sustainable approach to design and redesign sacrifices nothing in user comfort.

    - amazing house! and they found a perfect occupier
    - beautiful use of sleepers and wood from the bridge but prefer to use term repurposed wood than recycled, because the preservation of original state rather than being processed for other use
    - will the ground floor get really wet during heavy downpour with the open-to-air airwell?
    - black sanitary fittings should have been better match with the house
    - the acrylic inset at the window slit likely an afterthought but well it doesn't look that bad
    - would think a slim metal display shelf works better than the current glass one
