Ca. 1996, I saw Max perform at Redwood City CA's Sequoia High School auditorium with Bill McKenna and his Californians. He made the same remarks about young black guys writing the new music. He also noted the Ernie Kovacs show had borrowed Gershwin's Rialto Ripples without getting permission to use it - the music director thought it was in the public domain. The show had to come to terms with the Gershwin family.
