  • The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon
    San Francisco
    October 28, 1990
Since the first race in 1981, the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon has brought top professional and amateur triathletes from all over to attempt the impossible, "to escape from Alcatraz Island." In 1990, the triathlon course provided a challenging 1.5 mile swim from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco’s Aquatic Park, a one mile run to Fort Mason to warm up the athlete's legs, and a 20-mile bike ride from Fort Mason along the coast and back again, across the Golden Gate Bridge to Fort Baker, where the run was lengthened to 17.5 miles through the Marin Headlands with a near to 3,000 foot total elevation change. Chris had some mechanical problems on the bike leg, and he wasn't able to make it to Ft. Baker in time for the run portion. I was digitizing some old family videos and found the taped footage to make this video. This was a great memory for us to share and a day that we will never forget.

Considering that the nearby Dipsea race has a 2000 ft elevation change for 7.2 miles, and they used to run a double-Dipsea for the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, I guess it wasn't too bad....lol. 😎👍

@@warren.whitlock I’ve been begging for someone to upload the entire NBC coverage of this race with Mike Plant (RIP), Julie Moss, etc.
My friend Eney Jones retired from triathlon after this race and she lead the swim for the ladies.
