This was originally going to be one mega-sized Dreamcast video but the VMU is just one accessory and was shaping up to be half the video. So we decided to split it into two normal-sized Dreamcast videos!

The Dreamcast is just a legendary system that was sadly screwed by history and pure chance. It helped to open the way to so much that has become standards in consoles and modern gaming.
I think what continues to annoy me most is there's no where to purchase so many of those games to this day. I mean GameCube and Wii got a few, PSP got the Power Stone Collection and I think some other ones and of course various Sega games went to the original Xbox. But so many great games have not been brought into the modern era with an HD remaster or a port of any kind. The switch is absolutely fertile ground for this and yet it lies fallow.
I understand what you're saying but it wasn't really chance that doomed the DC. Sega made too many mistakes with things like the 32x,the Saturn etc. By the time they got it right with the DC they were hemorrhaging money and it was all or nothing for them by that point. Putting a DVD player in it would have helped but it might have been too much for them in 98'. There just weren't enough Sega fans left to make a difference. I played it nonstop till 2002 but the PS2 pretty much crushed everything under it's iron boot and Sega relied too much on its arcade games which weren't selling in the U.S. Pity but much like Nintendo with the N64,they dug their own grave and laid down in it.
@@kellinwinslow1988 at least Nintendo didn't die after the N64, Sega should have never gave up on the Saturn so soon, that pissed a lot of Sega fans that moved over to the PlayStation.
@@Dash120z I agree with you since I loved the Saturn. I supported it right up till the bitter end. Enemy zero and Magic Knight Rayearth were my last games. However Sega was in a no win situation. The Saturn was dead in North America but it was still going in Japan. If they kept the Saturn going it would have struggled on in Japan but they would have lost any chance of doing anything over here. It was lose lose. For them it was the last chance but Nintendo could suffer through the failure of the N64 and the GameCube since they had more money than Sega and owed no one anything. Microsoft was the same way with the Xbox. Sega really had no good choices.
3:25 A little note, the fishing controller DOES in fact have shoulder controls, the reel is mapped to the R input and shaking is the L input, not ideal for most games, but you can use it to look around in sonic adventure
I remember that Iomega was planning on making a zip drive peripheral for the DC; it was actually announced in one of my PC magazines around the DC's launch. Did not know that one was actually made (or at least a prototype).
I live in Northern Utah and drive by Iomega"s former headquarters regularly. Its a credit card office building now. My dad still has some zip disks though!
@@brondabailey1 Yep I'm old enough to remember the days when that was a legitimate thing before SD cards came in and pretty much completely stole their Thunder. The Dreamcast really does perfectly exemplify 1999 and the early 2000's technologically speaking. Though the fact you could actually get online and browse the internet and such on the Dreamcast was huge. I mean the thing even got a High Speed DSL version of its modem that was only ever released in Japan.
It's definitely the definitive version. Though the PlayStation and Gameboy Color versions are both really good. it's just a great game in general. But it just felt so perfect on the Dreamcast it just felt right.
When you brought up light gun shooters, you forgot to mention what may be the best light gun shooter on the system: Confidential Mission. Basically it's Virtua Cop with a James Bond parody twist. Fantastic, check it out!
And many with even slight upgrading look way better. So many games on Dreamcast deserve an HD remaster / re-release. It's simply astonishing Sega hasn't put out a collection at this point on any System. The switch is begging for a huge bunch of games from the Dreamcast yet it has as I'm aware of zero games from the Dreamcast.
Here's an idea; a Mr Driller Game Jam. Everyone starts with a port of Mr Driller and teams are divided and forced to make the game work with whatever peripheral they can find. Leap Motion control, P5 glove, MIDI keyboards, microwaves, whatever the hell you can scrounge up!
This channel gets closer to being LGR for consoles with every upload and I can't stop watching. Looking forward to the VMU video and I've never even owned a Sega system. Good times!
I dont even realize how young I was when the dreamcast came out since I have so many memories of playstation, n64, and snes, but I was 6 when Dreamcast came out and my family got one.

Derek, I think your "pirated" HL is the wrong build. The ones I use support keyboard and mouse just fine, on top of the mods for HLDC supporting it too.
We're planning on a Half Life ports Punching Weight down the line, I haven't had the opportunity to deep dive into the Dreamcast port yet. But I will make sure my due diligence is done, don't worry.
Man, memories of PSO; with all its ups and downs. Loved the Dreamcast; and all its funky little weird accessories just made it stand out a ton. Even its VMU was such a weird idea for a memory card.
Fun fact about the VMU Sony had a version for the japanese PS1 called the "Pocket station" it was used mostly for games like "Missadventures of tron bonne" ans ... spyro 2

I think my question is always Sega has no problem constantly putting out collections of Sega Genesis (mega drive) games and also occasionally Sega Saturn but almost never have we gotten any of the Dreamcast games to this day. A number of games have been dribbled out across multiple portable consoles and mostly Nintendo consoles. the fact in 2019 there is no where to get a Dreamcast collection of any kind at most there's about 40 truly great games on the Dreamcast not including great import games too. We need a collection Sega please.

Ah Seaman, I am so lucky that when I got my Hello Kitty dreamcast on eBay from Japan, the seller included some of their old games including a CIB copy of it! Granted it was the Japanese version, but it made a great way to practice speaking the language for me considering I live in rural Pennsylvania and finding fluent Japanese speakers to talk to was rather ...impossible.

Ah Seaman, I am so lucky that when I got my Hello Kitty dreamcast on eBay from Japan, the seller included some of their old games including a CIB copy of it! Granted it was the Japanese version, but it made a great way to practice speaking the language for me considering I live in rural Pennsylvania and finding fluent Japanese speakers to talk to was rather ...impossible.
