Fun fact: one of the reasons why Doom 3 ran so well and was so easy to port to the Xbox is because Doom 3’s source code is some of the neatest, cleanest, and tidiest in video game history. I’ve heard it described as “beautiful.”
Late answer, but it was also because the og Xbox had similar hardware to what John Carmack was using when he began to architect the engine, you could say it´s an early version of the game running on the console
I joined the Slayer's Club for the hell of it back in March and it paid off for me: I won one of those nice, high-end Doom Slayer figures that is like 18" tall.
Joined after finally getting a 1060 GTX. Then won a shirt with only one drawing entry. Never showed up. Emailed them. So, almost two months later _two_ Slayer's Club shirts showed. My girlfriend really likes them; thankfully she puts up with my crippling cyclical Doom playing nature.
The 2009 iOS port of Ultimate Doom was how I first experienced Doom. I played that shit along with Wolfenstein 3D on my iPad 2 religiously. I wound up getting the BFG Edition for PS3 to finally play Doom II, and now after owning my own laptop for nearly 5 years now, I've experienced all the OG Doom games along with some of the best mods and regular deathmatch events. Doom really is eternal.
Same! It actually was a good port too. I was like, "Oh, this is why this game is so famous. It's really good." To be such an early FPS and to remain to be a worthwhile experience is something else.
if that is the first time you experienced doom then you are doing it wrong. i was 6 when i played doom for the first time. on an old windows 98 pc. with only a keyboard through the doom95 port. get it for pc. use GzDoom. download tons of awesome mods. and enjoy it
I'm not seeing any mention of another problem with these ports: They run at the original 35fps cap, which does not play nice with modern displays. That 35fps cap was in the PC original because, at the time, 70Hz was a common refresh rate for monitors and 35 divides evenly into that. However with basically every display these new ports are going to be put on refreshing at 60Hz, it no longer divides evenly and causes microstutter and screen tearing. This also simply shouldn't be an issue, as every source port under the sun fixes things so the game runs at whatever framerate it needs to.
@@CinnamonOwO Yeah my bad, screen tearing is actually a nonfactor in this case. Microstutter is still a problem though. ruclips.net/video/UYTomYMAzYE/видео.html
Issues after Bethesda's license takeover is the reason I only play third party source ports with my Doom WADs now. If you want portable Doom, I recommend Delta Touch on Android with a controller. Played through Doom 1 and 2, Plutonia & TNT, Master levels for 2, Heretic, Hexen, and that weird Chex Quest trilogy thing on it with no issues, and control customization is fully featured on that app. You just have to copy your WAD files to the app.
To elaborate on the "Master Levels has a level select but the others don't" issue, there _is_ actually a reason for that. The Master Levels as represented in console ports, are kind of mangled. In its original release, each map was its own WAD, and they were meant to be played individually. The console ports combining them into a single continuous episode breaks them because they were meant to be played with a pistol start. So it's cool to see a console port finally acknowledge that and represent the Master Levels as they were intended to be played, but the other games should probably have some sort of level select as well.
Speaking of 1st person shooters, Derek & Grace are you guys someday going to do a Punching Weight episode about Duke Nukem spin-offs like Duke Nukem: Zero Hour for N64 & Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes for PSone?
My first Nukem experience was 64 then Zero Hour, never played land of the Babes. Played a demo of Forever and didn't bother getting the full version (20 years in development hell apparently has some really negative effects on games).
I read almost all the comments, and nobody talked about it, so I'll ask you this: I was surprised you didn't mention the Doom Complete Edition on PS3, which had Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, TNT, Plutonia, No Rest and Master levels. I thought it was made by Devolver Digital (But I checked, and I confused it with the Duke Nukem Megathon Edition on PS3), and I thought they made an awesome job with the controls, especially when it comes to the weapons.
Well I must've gotten these newfangled ports at the right time, because not only are there barely any issues to speak of, they're in the proper 4:3 aspect ratio, and they have downloadble add-ons. I mean for goodness sake, I can even play SIGIL. On Console! What a time to be alive.
If you want a good Doom to play on your phone, get Delta Touch. It's essentially a mobile port of GZDOOM. It's got gyro aiming, which is a surprisingly amazing way of controlling Doom.
Okay, but like, a level select for Master Levels is 100% sensible and isn't really worth complaining about, though. The levels were initially released as 20 individual wads and every time they've tried to put them into a single episode they always fuck up the order of levels that actually do have a consistent story. As cool as it would be for some official port of Doom to FINALLY put together definitive versions of Dr. Sleep's Inferno or Cranium's Cabal, it's not a bad move to stay true to the original release and just have each wad individually selectable. Also the complaining about the lack of Final Doom and NRFTL in this video is kinda funny in hindsight after the "official add-on" update.
I play the XBLA edition for 360/Xbox One. That edition was the first time I played Doom, even though Wolfenstein was one of the first games I ever played.
On the Master Levels having a level select, neither Doom 1 or 2 had a level select on DOS, but the Master Levels came with a launcher program and were designed to be played individually, not in any order. This is because the levels were designed to be pistol-started.
Recent Switch update fixed a lot of doom/doom 2 issues. Not sure about the music but they added more level packs, level select for all campaigns, fixed some sound issues like the chainsaw etc. I've been loving them.
If you guys want good portable doom, with all the wads, fan mods and content. You can play them on the portable emulator consoles like the GPD series and the MOQI. Izzie Nombre's channel explains how to put them on a GPD. If you get the GPD WIN you can just play it straight from steam or the DOS version. Much better options.
theyve acually improved the mobile ports, controls are better now that theres a fire button that also acts as a look stick but you can still look by sliding the left side, and just added buttons in general
This video needs an update. The console versions of Doom have been fixed, with limited mod support, including Final Doom, John Romero's Sigil and more on the way
Stonetown3487 Definitely, plus he completely glossed over the PlayStation 3 Doom collection that did have Final Doom, just didn’t have No Rest for the Living expansion since that was an Xbox exclusive at the time.

Doom was one of those games that always fascinating me since I was a kid that I just never got around to playing.the moment the dropped on switch i immediately bought all 3 ports. I Doom for the first time in 2019 and damn now it's one of my favorite games
You can homebrew Chocolate and GZDoom ports onto Switch, and play all your favourite wads on them without any issues, including usermade ones. On smartphones (at least Android), there's Delta-Touch, which houses several ports including Zandronum, Chocolate, prBoom and GZDoom. There's also RetroArch that has prBoom core, and I'm pretty sure it works on iPhones.
You've gotta be kidding me. Earlier today, I hooked up my original Xbox for the first time in over a year (it was in storage all of that time) and decided to try out all of the Xbox games I got during that time that I couldn't try it out. One of those games was Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil and, after playing some of the main game, I went to try out Ultimate Doom and Doom 2 on the disc. You putting this video out a few hours later is a very pleasant surprise. :)
The bethesda ports are now much better and now let you download additional map packs like the Final Doom packs (TNT and Plutonia), No Rest for the Living and even Sigil. You will still need to make a Bethesda account to access these packs but I call that a fair deal. You no longer need the account to play the games either.
The switch versions were updated so now they have 60fps, fixed music and sound, 4:3 aspect ratio, a weapon wheel, nazi generals restored in doom 2, the ability to play Final Doom, No rest for the living, and SIGIL, and more. The endings are unchanged so no bunny on spike, and the nightmare pinkies are still regular speed, but still, it’s the best version of doom you can play. EDIT: There is the bunny on the spike. Just wait at the text instead of mashing the button.
I'd love to see an update video talking about the Doom 64 release (which I've been having a blast with), and the most recent versions of Doom and Doom II.
I would love to see something about unofficial ports on this format. There is Delta Touch on Android which is a port of multiple Doom sourceports that let you play Doom if you have the WAD files from the PC version and even mod it. It has plenty of control customization as well. Also there is a Doom 64 PC port made by modders which requires a Doom 64 rom and even lets you change the FoV and still like that.
There was another update after this video went live that ironed out the rest of the issues and tbh makes the Switch port of of the best versions of classic DOOM. Game now runs at 60fps, aspect ratio has been fixed up a bit, lighting has been corrected, and the music now runs at the intended speed thanks to the guys at Nerve capturing audio from an actual 90s PC sound card.
Well my first Doom was the SNES version and I actually beat it multiple times back in the day. I bought my first PC at -97 and PC version of Doom much later on, also I had the PSone version.
@@ZeldaDD I think the music GREATLY helped there. it sounded awesome. And it had all 3 episodes, which none of the other consoles ports up to that time had. But yeah the GFX will give you headaches because you had to squint your eyes so much. but hey it was Doom on the SNES in a red cartridge!
I'm curious, are you gonna re-look at these console Doom ports when they patch in Sigil, Final Doom, etc in that pseudo WAD loading feature they announced? These ports kept me away around launch, but I am curious to see how well the experience has improved, and if they're worth getting after the updates.
The update not only fixed the music playback (which was like, 0.75x of the original speed), they actually recorded the music from the legit Roland SC-55. It sounds fantastic!
As someone who played the entirety of Doom for the first time on iOS I can confirm many of the controls available for the old version were just plain better. There was a mode that made turning work like an axis like strafing and it was very fun to use. The OG iOS Doom port has a very storied history, from the ability to swap the WAD files via jailbreaking and play Doom 2, to the fact it's just PRBoom+ underneath and was released open-source, to the fact there was a free iOS port of HacX based on the same code, to shady Taiwanese developers cranking out OBLIGE levelsets and slapping them on Freedoom, then releasing them by the thousands to bloat up the app store and make a quick buck. I don't think these new Unity-based ports will leave nearly as interesting as a history.
The original iOS Doom port was the one and only official Doom port that took advantage of source code from the open source community's various Doom programming feats. John Carmack based it on "PRBoom" which was a very faithful and high quality Doom source port with a hardware-accelerated renderer.
SNES Doom was my first experience of playing this legendary title, and I thought it was the best thing ever. Say it hasn't aged very well, but it was still an amazing achievement for the 16bit hardware. For Doom on the go, I tend to play the PS1 version on my phone through emulation, and it plays perfectly.
I'd love to see a small part 4, talking about the most recent console Doom and Doom 2 ports after the most recent update. Giving it add-ons like Plutonia, TNT, and even Sigil. Along with audio and stuff being fixed. Also, can't wait for Doom 64's port on Xbox. Gonna have to grab that, definitely. Now we just need the weird PS1 version ported to modern consoles and we'd be good.
I am so sad that they managed to screw up the music in these new ports. Recently I got a Roland Sound Canvas and it makes Doom and Doom II sound so wonderful in DosBox. How hard could it have been for them to just make a recording from a Roland synth and slap it straight into those ports?
Well yes, my point exactly. I now have the means to do exactly the same. It's not exactly rocket science. So why can't a professional game studio get this right after doing ports for three console generations? I don't think they know or care about it, really.
You should check out the "Doom Classic Complete" Release on PS3. It features DOOM, DOOM II, The Master Levels, No Rest for the Living AND T.N.T & Plutonia.
11:52 About Final DOOM, both episodes for Final DOOM are now downloadable and playable through the Mod section in the DOOM 25th Anniversary Re-release. So basically, yea, Final DOOM is in the re-release!
There is a level select for Master Levels for Doom II because these levels are designed with pistol start in mind. Original DOS release contains the levels on individual .wad files. You are supposed to play them one by one not marathon them like in Doom I and II.
Right. Some ports and third-party mods arranged Master Levels maps into an Episode, but the original retail PC product had 21 maps in 20 separate .wad files. A narrow majority of those wads replace Doom II's first map. The rest replace levels that appear later in the normal Doom II mapset, but in many cases that's just to take advantage of special in-game triggers or events that can only occur on levels with that specific map number.
You should check out Delta Touch if you have an android phone. Lets you use 5 different source ports (GZDoom, Zandronum, PRBoom+, ChocolateDoom and DoomRetro) on your phone with mods etc. Honestly my fave way to play doom now is to hook up a bluetooth controller to my phone and play using DoomRetro. Perfect mix of classic and modern updates. I hear some people do pretty well in MP just using touch as well.

I like how the music and lighting was fixed right before you published this video.
Sometimes I like to just rewatch this episode and pause at 1:11. It makes me laugh every time to see his wide-eyed giddy smile. XD
Honestly the lighting of the bfg versions helped me out. My vision isn't the best so not having to strain my eyes helps
I love how this literally did post exactly when you said it would during your panel at RWX (I was the Sub-Zero lol).
Was not expecting to see an old upload of mines lol
I'd love to see a small part 4, talking about the most recent console Doom and Doom 2 ports after the most recent update. Giving it add-ons like Plutonia, TNT, and even Sigil. Along with audio and stuff being fixed.
Also, can't wait for Doom 64's port on Xbox. Gonna have to grab that, definitely. Now we just need the weird PS1 version ported to modern consoles and we'd be good.
TFW Bethesda can't even rerelease a game successfully.
I am so sad that they managed to screw up the music in these new ports. Recently I got a Roland Sound Canvas and it makes Doom and Doom II sound so wonderful in DosBox. How hard could it have been for them to just make a recording from a Roland synth and slap it straight into those ports?
Someone already did record the entire doom ost on a SC55 and uploaded that in sc55.duke4.net
Well yes, my point exactly. I now have the means to do exactly the same. It's not exactly rocket science. So why can't a professional game studio get this right after doing ports for three console generations? I don't think they know or care about it, really.
Derick, if your still looking for ways to torture yourself, go buy yourself a Tapwave Zodiac gaming PDA and play its port of doom 2 XD
Damn, these videos are pretty awesome. Great work! You and Scott the Woz are some of the best, sick editing and commentary! Yeah!
Always love your videos. Your passion for this stuff is amazing. Please keep making more!
It's sad they haven't put online multiplayer on re-release version of doom 1 and 2
Bruh why haven’t/why won’t they?
NGL it's pretty cool that most of Derek's complaints have been addressed as of the January 2020 patch for DOOM and DOOM 2
You should check out the "Doom Classic Complete" Release on PS3.
It features DOOM, DOOM II, The Master Levels, No Rest for the Living AND T.N.T & Plutonia.
I audibly gasped when I saw a new SSFF video. Freaking love this channel.
11:52 About Final DOOM, both episodes for Final DOOM are now downloadable and playable through the Mod section in the DOOM 25th Anniversary Re-release. So basically, yea, Final DOOM is in the re-release!
"You'd think it would be impossible to mess up classic doom in 2019, but Bethesda" wwwwhhhyyyy do people still give this company money
because unfortunately an entirely incompetent company has some of the just iconic ips ever made
There is a level select for Master Levels for Doom II because these levels are designed with pistol start in mind.
Fun Fact the 2019 port is using Classic Doom version 1.10 while BFG uses version 1.11
10:29 Only Stop Skeletons From Fighting would notice these changes in the DOOM intro song
>intro
You should check out Delta Touch if you have an android phone. Lets you use 5 different source ports (GZDoom, Zandronum, PRBoom+, ChocolateDoom and DoomRetro) on your phone with mods etc. Honestly my fave way to play doom now is to hook up a bluetooth controller to my phone and play using DoomRetro. Perfect mix of classic and modern updates. I hear some people do pretty well in MP just using touch as well.
I bought Doom 1 on the switch and I don’t buy games very often, so I knew it would be good, nice video on the ports and stuff. Nice to see more Punching Weight.
Switch light theme?! [HISSES]
*cacodemon hissing intensifies* I also use dark mode.
Whoa, I just finished your last one and this one came out!
