Some of the animation, mainly towards the end, was quite good. If I were in Chirico's position, I'd open fire on the control rooms and communications arrays, as retribution for this treacherous "training."
I mean, he eventually did something pretty similar. He just waited until he knew he'd be able to escape. And it's for beter that he did wait, as the people firing on him here ended up becoming his accomplices in that.

Major spoilers below, for this and the Last Red Shoulder OVA. First Chirico shoots the tower and leads a riot out. Then during the Sunsa battle he kills the commander in charge of the base, the one carrying a whip and nicknamed Warden. Finally, Chirico ends all Red Shoulders in the Last Red Shoulder OVA, including their creator Pailsen. And it's really fucking well done.
@@radkonpsygami7634 CG is a great tool to make complex animations that hand-drawn could never accomplish, and with textures, you can make it look the same as the environment (which can be hand-drawn itself) without making it entirely stand out. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex used this to great effect with their mecha designs.
I honestly loved the OVAs even more than the original series. Pailsen Files is the peak to me, makes sense because it was the last one to be made. It has beautifully drawn animation, with some decent CG in between. Most importantly, the design is clearly influenced by late 90's early 2000's military engagements. The opening, with soldiers clearly based on images of US soldiers on the flight deck of aircraft carriers running operations in the Gulf, it's so stunning. It really feels like a bittersweet nostalgic rememberance. The character tension is also well crafted and it adds to that feeling. We know Chirico is going to be the only one left, but the rest of the crew get real characterization and screen time. The ending is abrupt, even a bit silly, but it being a prequel and all the buildup made it necessary to erase anything that could have changed the original. The battles in the OVAs are so much grander in scale and Chirico is much more determined to survive, it's amazing.

They are supposed to be like T26s, light fast and deadly but also really vulnerable, the hull is easily penetrated and the fuel/lubrificant is easily combustible. So I guess the transmission and suspension must be amazing to compensate and help them swarm the enemy.

+ES21007 The biggest one is the main lens with standard magnification. The red one has high magnification for precise aiming. The smallest one is a wide-angle lens with low magnification.

It makes sense in context, the idea of the red shoulders was a darwinist experiment to find soldiers with unnatural survival potential first and an actual military unit second

I have heard of that series, and I found a 1993 interview with the developers of Assault Suits Valken where they mentioned the designs were influenced by Votoms and Gundam, but not directly based on them. That is the closest link I found to the series. So it’s not the same setting.

I always thought back in the day that Assault Suit Valken and Votoms was the same story, especially the Saturn game, with the detailed 2D animation and huge Mech spider bosses. Zone of Enders seems to also take a lot of inspiration from all these series as well, though its story on the PS2 is darker and ominous.
Really cool action scene but killing your own recruits to weed out the week makes no sense. Especially as these two potentially killed more than two soldiers who presumably passed the same program. In military training terms this is what is known as a death spiral, where you are destroying institutional experience faster than you accumulate it.
Yoran Pailsen, the commander of this unit, was after something more valuable to him than institutional experience. He was putting soldiers through the meat grinder deliberately to find candidates with Abnormal Survivor potential.

Edit : Don't get me wrong, it looks super cool and I'll roll with it in fiction. But it's silly. From ancient Sparta to the Japanese Imperial Army and Navy. The Spartans brutalized their children believing it would create superior warriors. They were then matched and defeated by the Athenian Sacred band who were simply well trained citizens. The Japanese Imperial Airforce ended up getting steadily outflown as American fighter pilots accumulated experienced, were rotated back to train more pilots, and then came back accompanied by ever more and more able wingmen.
Wow. is like the most wasteful training idea of all time. Dozens of mechs destroyed, "proven" pilots killed that could be trainers, and then Troops with no experience being just shot up so that one gets lucky enough to survive?
This trope gets trotted out all the time in stories about 'Badass' soldiers, assassin's, etc. The reality is it's beyond idiotic because of the time, energy, and money invested. Sure they try to play it up as that one survivor is like really good, but there's a saying. Quantity is a Quality all it's own.
It makes total sense in universe if you watch the OVA, even if it is psychopath logic (which is pretty much the default state of mind for the military in this universe.) Because only the most hardened survivors could pass muster, the Red Shoulders became the most ruthless and feared military unit in the galaxy. Neither manpower nor Armored Troopers were in short supply for the Gilgamesh Union, which had an absolutely titanic manpower and industrial base to draw upon. It only makes more sense when you consider that Yoran Pailsen, the commander of the unit, is actually running the unit more as an experiment than anything else - he's looking for a special kind of survivor, someone with the ultra-rare Abnormal Survivor gene that grants them a supernatural ability to cheat death. The more of a meat grinder his unit is, the better his chances of finding an Abnormal Survivor. In the end his experiment was actually a success, because it allowed him to discover that Chirico is an abnormal survivor. It's worth saying that Pailsen was a madman and an evil bastard even by the low standards of morals in the Votoms universe.
People that never watched Votoms or have a single idea of what it is about talking "lol it not like real life WTF", if you havent watched the series dont comment.

ATの人命軽視な設定がすごく『むせる』ので好き。ATの生産費用が軽装甲車両程度とか、義足義手の応用だとか、コスト削除のために、ATにモニターはなく、ゴーグルとターレットレンズを接続して見るとか、ATを動かすポリマーリンゲル液が、発火性が高く爆発しやすいけど、コスト削減のためにあえて使用しているとか、本当に、人命軽視な設定がすごい。
実際、軽装甲車両程度の装甲だから、結構対人に対しても優位性は、それほど高く無いという設定も好き。
本当に安価で生産出来るというのを優先した設定が好き。
視てるだけで硝煙と火薬の匂いが染み付きそうだ

キリコはオリジナル本編の第1話では味方同士で戦う事に凄く動揺していたが、この野望のルーツは時系列的にはその第1話より昔のはずなのに、キリコが凄く冷静。

So, since the armor in all these mechs can be pierced and destroyed so easily with simple rounds, what's the point in going into all this trouble and wearing and using them in the first place slowing you down during battle?!
Bigger larger guns, faster movement, suitable for many forms of terrain, cheaper than a civilian car (votoms are called bottoms as a slang in universe for obvious reasons)

It makes sense in context, the idea of the red shoulders was a darwinist experiment to find soldiers with unnatural survival potential first and an actual military unit second
If they had checked their own munitions before deployment-rather than blindly trusting the technicians-might have noticed they were not headed out with blanks and gotten a clue
In their defense they probably didn’t have the time to really think about it. This test was right after they landed.

I have heard of that series, and I found a 1993 interview with the developers of Assault Suits Valken where they mentioned the designs were influenced by Votoms and Gundam, but not directly based on them. That is the closest link I found to the series. So it’s not the same setting.

I always thought back in the day that Assault Suit Valken and Votoms was the same story, especially the Saturn game, with the detailed 2D animation and huge Mech spider bosses. Zone of Enders seems to also take a lot of inspiration from all these series as well, though its story on the PS2 is darker and ominous.

Really cool action scene but killing your own recruits to weed out the week makes no sense. Especially as these two potentially killed more than two soldiers who presumably passed the same program. In military training terms this is what is known as a death spiral, where you are destroying institutional experience faster than you accumulate it.
Well the entire universe of Votoms is dark. A lot of lives are thrown away with no regard.
Yoran Pailsen, the commander of this unit, was after something more valuable to him than institutional experience. He was putting soldiers through the meat grinder deliberately to find candidates with Abnormal Survivor potential.

Wow. is like the most wasteful training idea of all time. Dozens of mechs destroyed, "proven" pilots killed that could be trainers, and then Troops with no experience being just shot up so that one gets lucky enough to survive?
Due to Japan's pre-modern ideas, they also failed to train soldiers during the war.

This trope gets trotted out all the time in stories about 'Badass' soldiers, assassin's, etc. The reality is it's beyond idiotic because of the time, energy, and money invested. Sure they try to play it up as that one survivor is like really good, but there's a saying. Quantity is a Quality all it's own.
It makes total sense in universe if you watch the OVA, even if it is psychopath logic (which is pretty much the default state of mind for the military in this universe.) Because only the most hardened survivors could pass muster, the Red Shoulders became the most ruthless and feared military unit in the galaxy. Neither manpower nor Armored Troopers were in short supply for the Gilgamesh Union, which had an absolutely titanic manpower and industrial base to draw upon. It only makes more sense when you consider that Yoran Pailsen, the commander of the unit, is actually running the unit more as an experiment than anything else - he's looking for a special kind of survivor, someone with the ultra-rare Abnormal Survivor gene that grants them a supernatural ability to cheat death. The more of a meat grinder his unit is, the better his chances of finding an Abnormal Survivor. In the end his experiment was actually a success, because it allowed him to discover that Chirico is an abnormal survivor. It's worth saying that Pailsen was a madman and an evil bastard even by the low standards of morals in the Votoms universe.
People that never watched Votoms or have a single idea of what it is about talking "lol it not like real life WTF", if you havent watched the series dont comment.
