Hope you still read this. I recently watched the Votoms series with exception of Pailsen files as I was a bit 'cooked' by then. What did you think of Shining Brilliant Heresy, Alone Again, and Phantom Arc? I bet that for people in the 80s who watched the original series , the OVAs, and Armor Hunter Mellowlink, it was great to see the main character and later the other characters again, but I can't help but feel that it was rather unnecessary and unsatisfying. Especially the Phantom arc which banked so much on nostalgia even if it was fun to see some of the locations of the 80s series again. A follow up to the Wiseman plot felt so unnecessary, especially as the plot itself was so ridiculous. (one group of nomads wants to kill a newborn child before it can be judged to be an Overman, while other tribes want to judge the child to be an Overman and then kill it). Personally I wish the writers would have explored ideas with new characters.

I do want more Votoms but not more Chirco. I still hope we get a Blue Knight Berserga series.

The only thing I miss is the music composed by Hiroki Inui. He passed away long time ago and I wish I could listen to his new BGM again.
I feel like this inspired the scene in Gundam the Origin where Char, Ramba Ral, and the Black Tri Stars dominate the 12 early pre-production gun cannons without a single loss or significant damage.

Note that the Red Shoulders weren't aiming for killshots on the trucks even though it would've been piss-easy for them. They wanted to get them to stop and submit to inspection since these fuckos landed on their HQ planet seemingly without authorization, then the investigation troops Scopedogs came out with guns ready and that's when they started killing.
The best lowtech dark gritty anime ever. Dunno, but it seems that the 20mm rifle has two modes of fire, low velocity auto or single shot high velocity.
That's OVA for you. OVA production tend to give the staff somewhat more time to draw more frames and to paint a more vibrant cel colouring unlike tv series which they have a tight schedule especially during the pre-digital era.
1:43 In "the last red shoulder" OVA that side-gatling weapon doesn't even scratch the new model suits at point blank, yet here it mows down two scopedogs like a hot knife through butter... I guess they really are made of explodium, lol.
Weren't the votoms loaded with some sort of hydraulic fluid that, while allowing the mech to move very fluidly, is extremely volatile and can explode even by friggin' temperature gradients?
I think the Red Shoulder ones are highly custom upgraded with decent ammo I guess to a point Chirico didn't penetrate much armor against his own at the last battle,
@@crazytiger800 Dougram is so good, its also really politically smart and true to real life. I like how the story is basically an analogy for how independence movements in South America and Africa were crushed by western intelligences agencies. It gets a bit repetitive in the middle but the story is so damn good that I don't mind.
Yes, Mellowlink was during post war, while this took place during late war. It's a 1h short story of the main character during his period in the red shoulder squad. In this clip an investigation team was getting attacked by the red shoulder squad which are supposed to be allies.
@@antihero9443 that is so cool, you see, im old, i used to watch anime in the old days before the internet so you would buy it at a comic book store as an import for 80$ plus and nobody had any backstories. so i had a bunch of armor hunter mellowlink and i loved it, but as far as the universe or other side stories go it was always a mystery to me
so idk if they took inspiration from armored trooper or which one came first but these mech remind me of the gears from an old computer game and tabletop game called heavy gear. not just in the appearance but also in the way the mechs move.
Heavy Gear: 1997 Armored Trooper Votoms: 1983 So it's already clear who rip-off who... and it's not like it is the only time US ripping off stuffs from Japan, legally or not. Another example would be Battletech.
@@mrtyler603 Well if you wanna get technical about it, Battlemechs are pretty darn fast. Even before the post-Clan power creep when everything got upgraded with XL engines and MASC and so on, an average 3025 era medium battlemech is about 50% faster than the offroad speed of modern day main battle tanks. Even the Atlas, the iconic "big stompy mech", is a fair bit faster than an M1A2 Abrams. It doesn't translate well to the videogames but in the tabletop, with advanced rules, mechs can jump, climb, crawl, crouch behind cover, and do most things a soldier could.
Heavy Gear took direct inspiration from Votoms, they even had a dedication to the series' director in the RPG book. The HG series itself came to be when the creators couldn't get rights to Votoms from the animation studio.

Don't expect Gundam levels of customization in this anime. The mechs are cheap and easy to produce and the only custom unit is the MC's mech in the sequel and even then, it was no different from a run of the mill Scopedog aside from the extra guns and artillery added. Because the theme of Votoms is Military Sci-Fi not Space Opera and the battles focuses on the skill and ingenuity of the combatants. Not on OP hardware like Gundam or Macross.
@@flipkiller8521 I meant red shoulders usually use turbo custom scopedogs(the ones with jet packs behind the legs) but here they are using normal types.
These convoys were sent in to find the main base of the Red Shoulders under orders from Melkia high command to expose the Red Shoulders leader Yoran Pailsen. As you can see once they land, they were utterly wiped out by the Red Shoulders VOTOMS unit to prevent info leak and possible sabotage or attack.
The anime isn't for you then. Don't expect Modern Mecha trappings in this anime since Votoms is one of the grittiest and most realistic mecha anime ever. No fanservice. No harem shenanigans. No overdone screaming and shouting. This is Military Sci-Fi not Space Opera. And the MC's combat and piloting skills are more believable since he's been in combat since he was 15. That's more believable than your typical Mecha MC who just got chosen at random and got good because of pure BS luck.

Also, saying Chirico doesn't have BS luck tells me you have literally never watched this series. The guy *breathes* BS luck, it's practically his superpower. Do we need to go over Shining Heresy's final battle, just as an example? Chirico gets completely wrecked, gets out of his cockpit, passes out, then drops his gun and it fires on impact with the ground at the perfect angle to penetrate a tiny hole in the enemy mech's cockpit, mortally wounding the pilot. Fucking what?
Got into VOTOMS in my sophomore year of high school, truly the start of a great journey. Probably one of the best anime franchises of all time.

セル作画のボトムズ系作品の中ではメロウリンクと並んで最もAT戦の殺陣と作画が優れているのがこの作品。
冒頭、レッドショルダーに襲撃され四散する調査隊機もTVシリーズ辺りでは閃光・火炎・煙に包まれて終わりだったが、この作品ではPR液に引火→内部で爆発→装甲が内側から膨らんで爆発→四散のプロセスで作画されている。恐らく同様の作画演出を最初に行ったのは「マクロス」第1作だと思われるが、本作では非常に作画に手間のかかるであろうこの爆発プロセスを全編で採用している事が特徴。爆発させない＋流血演出のメロウリンクと並び発表当時のロボット物OVAではトップクラスの出来映え。
見てるとこがマニアック過ぎるw

分かります、なんか泥臭い使い捨ての兵器感がないんですよね～
惑星オドン調査隊カラーのスコープドック、やられまくってたけど、カッコいい。
実はＴＶ本編ではほんとんど出ないがえらく有名な（笑）レッドシュルダー部隊がどんだけヤバイかよく出来た作品です。
陸戦のロボットメカをセル画でこれだけ激しく動かしたスピード感は感動ものです、
そしてボトムズ全体に言えるのがＢＧＭがまた良い、戦闘シーンはゾクゾクします、とにかくシリアス＆ハード。
正式名称は、ギルガメス宇宙軍第１０師団メルキア方面軍第２４戦略機甲歩兵団特殊任務班Ｘ－１
ほとんどつうか直接はただの一度も出て来ない、
キリコ以外の元隊員も正規の機体もね。
出て来るのは続編のOVA版
「ザ・ラストレッドショルダー」
と
「野望のルーツ」
だけ。
同じ機体でこうも一方的に・・・まぁレッドショルダー部隊のはカスタムされてるんだろうけど、それでも、正に桁外れ。
本編に出て来ないからこそ、本編中で今でも恐怖をもって語り継がれてるのが納得できるです( ˘ω˘ )
画面内で確認できる範囲でのキルレシオも0対24(30?)とレッドショルダーの強さがよくわかるシーンですよね

「野望のルーツ」も「ペールゼンファイルズ」もヨラン・ペールゼンという男の狂気がプンプン臭う作品だよなぁ。ロマンアルバムだったと思うけど「ATとは鍛え抜かれた肉体の更なる延長である」というペールゼンの言葉があったのを思い出した。

今のアニメは機械的なレベルでのクオリティが高い。それはあくまでコンピューターありきのため、今の半自動コンピューター作画時代では昔のような職人技は滅多に見られなくなってきた。

ふんだんに弾光の跳躍や うねる軌道が描かれてました
35年以上前の昭和のセルアニメで これほど爆発、硝煙に拘った作画の作品も珍しい？かもしれませんね
コンピュータではランダムな作画が出来ませんから どうしても単純で機械的な動きしか出来ません
リアリティを追求すれば、手描きが必然です
デジ画でも手描きで描けば理論上同じようにリアリティを再現出来るはずですが…
もうメカを手描きで書く時代も終わりましたね
ヴイオレットエヴァーガーデンとジブリなどの一部の作品だけはデジ画でも秀逸な作画ですが‥
今後 3D CGがデフォルトになっていって欲しくないと願っております

実際に戦闘があったら女の子ちゃんが吹っ飛んだり、バラバラ死体になっちゃう・・・という現実を知れば、戦争なんかやっちゃいけないし、ガルパンとか、艦これなんぞは、戦争の怖さと恐ろしさを伝えていないどーしょーもないモンだと思うよ。
艦これはともかくガルパンはスポ根だからジャンルが違うような...

This anime series started of so good then went downhill in the second half. Id take Blue comet SPT Layzner over this.

That's more believable than your typical Mecha MC who just got chosen at random and got good because of pure BS luck.

Also, saying Chirico doesn't have BS luck tells me you have literally never watched this series. The guy *breathes* BS luck, it's practically his superpower. Do we need to go over Shining Heresy's final battle, just as an example? Chirico gets completely wrecked, gets out of his cockpit, passes out, then drops his gun and it fires on impact with the ground at the perfect angle to penetrate a tiny hole in the enemy mech's cockpit, mortally wounding the pilot. Fucking what?
