  • BBC World News interview with Silent Spring's Dr. Jessica Helm (air date: 4/30/2018). Dr. Helm discusses a new study by the institute that shows that Black women are potentially exposed to dozens of hazardous chemicals through the hair products they use. This is the first study to measure concentrations of endocrine-disrupting chemicals-substances that interfere with the body’s hormones-in a variety of hair products marketed at Black women. The findings could help researchers understand why Black women have higher exposures to hazardous chemicals than other groups and how these elevated exposures contribute to health disparities in the U.S. population. pluviophile h I think it's the fear of the unknown. Most black women in America don't even know what their natural hair looks like because its been relaxed since childhood. Then, there's the history of being told our natural hair is ugly by society and some of our own and in order to attract the opposite sex, we need to have long flowy straight hair.
We as younger black women have to change society's idea of what is beautiful and make natural hair our beauty standard. If we keep relaxing our hair in attempts to meet the European standard of beauty that has been forced on us by society, that does nothing but harm us inside and out, we will always lose.

I experiment with various recipes based on the needs of my hair at any given time, however I have had quite good results with ingredients such as Shea butter, avocado oil, coconut oil, bacuri butter and castor oil. I made a gel formula using fresh aloe Vera, flaxseed gel, glycerine and Shea butter. You have to use emulsifying wax to bind them properly as water and fats cannot mix naturally. This is quite softening and moisturising to my hair and keeps it quite neat as well. Hope this helps. I added some essential oil as well for fragrance.

Yes I wrote the book on toxic hair products from China. In the 80s they bought out over 100 black hair care manufacturers only four black manufacturers refuse to sell. Today they have the Monopoly on hair care products so it's affecting all nationalities. China has a large surplus of animal hair the closest similarity to human hair. It was a diabolical plan that China used against America, today we have the highest rate of alopecia in the history of America. Weaves and wigs are more prevalent than ever. China has benefited trillions and trillions of dollars on bug infested animal hair. Great Britain denied China's hair products from entering their country decades ago stating that the hair products contain toxic chemicals and could cause cancer and permanently damage the follicles.

Correlation (link) does not equate to causation. They are being funded and have to put something out to keep the money coming in and a lot of times they are debunked. As far as fibroids are concerned African/African American women have more muscle around the uterus. Maybe this means something. I would strongly shy away from hysterectomy all together and only have the fibroids removed when BLEEDING is just unbelievably bad other than that just monitor them. Fibroids can shrink or go away on their own, they are not or if ever dangerous just heavier bleeding and pain. You can have them and not know it too. They are quick to give African American women a hysterectomy, WATCH OUT FOR THIS, just exercise more and eat healthy foods, lower stress levels, lose weight, keep mental health on point, pray, meditate, and enjoy life.

And yet there are still so many black women defending their use of relaxers. Sad. Not just from a physical health perspective but soul health as well. If you're constantly hiding what God gave you then there's a bigger problem and healing needs to happen from the inside out. That's why a lot of women who went natural some years ago are going back to relaxers because the inner healing hasn't happened.

You can tell these products are no good just by the smell of the hair oils and creams that black women buy in those hair shops. Test: Smell hair products designed for white hair, do they smell bad? Now smell hair products for black hair. These products are also highly flammable. Also be careful of relaxers, they can cause fibroids which black women are more likely to develop.

Vaseline and water is the only thing that is safe to put on your hair. This is something I learned in the early 90s thank God that someone is actually put it out there so that black one will know please share this video so that we can all stop killing ourselves for the beauty

Vaseline is a product made from distilled gasoline and it not safe for the body or hair. do your research. Same with Mineral oil, it is a cheap filler used to make products cost less, but just like plastic. it coats the hairshaft and does not allow air to penetrate. Vaseline not a healthy product

After weaves/braids i wld alwys gt breakouts, severe scalp irritation, and sometimes hoarseness and headaches. It happend with conditioners, oils and hair vitamins too. I stoppd it all. I startd thinkng about all the "supposedly more natural" products (not) marketed to us by these beauty supply stores! Literally Killing me! The cost/cheapness of these products.. manufactured and sold to us primarily by the Chinese! Insane. So following my hunch about these products and how they've affected me, I stopped using evrything! Needless to say,Im natural for now. Im very thankful for the many ppl sharing their experiences on RUclips. Ive learned how to make natural beauty products, herbal teas, flaxseed gel etc..for my hair and skin. And they work. But more importantly, Im so much healthier as a result. Skin cleard up all over and i feel good! Rather than throwing on the chemically infused hair and toxic nails to look good, being active and fit is getting me the results that i prefer. I hope more women choose health over beauty. Thnx for this informative video!!

My daughter downloaded an app to my phone that rates products from 0-100, with 100 being the best. Several Shea Moisture products were rated as a 35 or lower. It list all the ingredients and rates them from good to very bad. I started spending more time in the oil section of the grocery store.

Shea Moisture is no longer black-owned. There're other products that are marketed for black women, but are no longer black-owned. Don't buy anymore of the crap in the beauty supply store that has been created to kill us, unless you're certain that the company is black-owned. Other than that, just make your own.

The study did not find a direct causal link between usage of the stated hair products and cancer formation in women, or how much exposure to endocrine disruptors (which are in very many things besides hair products such as fertilisers, plastics etc). one would need to consume/be exposed to daily in order for there to be an impact on health. Lastly, it did not discuss other factors such as genetic or social factors which may make black people more/less suspectable to their effects. So I find it a bit speculative, and note the authors cannot do this either and hence have made careful attempts not to name specific products.
However, it certainly makes sense to avoid using chemicals which may be toxic as much as possible and using organic where one can in every aspect of life and especially regards food and body/hair products.

That’s is a lie about women of African origin having fibroids mainly due to hair products. If you work in a medical field fibroids are synonymous with WOMEN of any race and do the studies show how many European women have fibroids and fertility issues which are more of an issue amongst Europeans than people of African origin, hence the adoption and fertility clinics geared or focused on european woman as opposed to Asian or Afro women. Also the Asian and Africa populations are growing whereas the European populations are on a decline. Eg look at Europe. There is a great need for immigration because european communities eg the Italians Spanish Portuguese etc are on a decline due to disease STDs causing infertility in Europeans and low birth rates hence the population decline. Most women who have a hysterectomy due to fibroids are European women not Afro or Asian women, most of those women are then put on HRT which is found to be detrimental to women by european research standards. She mentions ‘black’ women. Her studies are US based not African based or Caribbean based. She is referring to African American women. Yes the main hair products that many Afro women use is from the US so are the most of the european hair products and chemicals used in the hair industry globally. And yes there is an issue with fertility amongst African Americans more so than amongst Caribbeans or Africa women due to different lifestyles and cultures and influential systems and diet. Those Afro people entering the American system and culture yes will eventually succumb to the US medical issues too. And I am not saying that Africans or Caribbeans or Asians or Europeans don’t have an issue with fertility they all do but not on the same level as Europeans do. They don’t know what causes fibroids and are clutching at straws to find a link. The hair issue that Afro people have is the same as what any woman of any race has too. But Afro women who use these products are lazy and have forgotten how to manage their own hair and would rather wear someone else’s to try and pass (which is laughable). Also most Afro women and European wear wigs because they are balding or are bald due to many years or hair and scalp abuse with wigs weaves chemical relaxers and perms etc the latest victim is Jada Pinckett Smith. Those Afro women who wear the wigs and weaves need to love themselves an need to stop 🛑 looking like fools you never see a lion wearing snake skin. When I see the cruise ships land with the Africans American women they all have HBO there are not many natural haired African Americans around which is sad. Women should love themselves regardless of who or where they are from and stop taking out a mortgage to pay for your fake weaves and wigs. Real or fake housewives of Atlanta is a prime example. Seeing African women with european wigs is the same as Europeans wearing an Afro wigs so misappropriation works both ways 😂 those women who relax their hair perm their hair or wear wigs weaves etc are still under mental slavery of a system that doesn’t care and never will. The world is about making money exploitation and dishonesty. People have choices but sadly many make the wrong choice and never learn. Afro women need to realise that european style hair wigs and weaves doesn’t mean advancement it means freak show as in the fake housewives of Atlanta. GO NATURAL AND PUT THEM OUT OF BUSINESS MAKE YOUR OWN NATURAL PRODUCTS

I avoid most commercial products bc of all the chemicals, but pls know that Black women have frequent fibroids bc we have increased estrogen, which is also the reason Blacks, specifically those of West African descent, have the highest rates of twins in the world, and also the reason Black women tend to be more curvy.

This is so true. I own my own hair an body care line at Charlene's Natural Blessing's and although I fight not to put any unsafe chemicals within my products because all of my products go on my hair and skin as well as my kids. I had to throw out so many product ingredients because it had cancer forming chemicals in it. Even the people you purchase these chemicals from do not tell you. Our fragrance oils have no formaldehyde in it. And some of these preservatives can have cancer activating chemicals as it produces cancer. Formaldehyde and Cancer Risk - National Cancer Institute So in short some of these companies are killing men women and children with their products. People think they are saving more buy purchasing so of these products and they may say owe it does make my hair feel good, but if it's killing you then you just paid someone to poison you and your family. Do your own research and even if it cost more to be healthy than you just defined you are worth it.
