+Cancer Survivor26 I had a lady that had her weave in for over a year and let me tell you you're never prepared for all that. the ladie didn't do any hair maintenance I had to cut her real matted hair along with the weave out. I tried my best to save her real hair but her mind set was "oh well I'll buy more hair"....smh
I remember walking into an Asian hair store with my mom and sister once and there was a wig there that I loved so much. My hair at the time didn't even reach my shoulders and it was way too damaged(on the ends) to straighten. So instead of saving enough money to buy the wig, I decided to try growing my hair long and healthy. The other kids and some of my relatives always liked to talk about my hair at the time because protecting it wasn't so pretty, plus I'm naturally curly. Now it's been a few years and my hair is very full, very healthy, and even longer than the wig I wanted so bad!! The wig would've stopped at my collar bones but now my real hair stops at about mid-back when straightened and below my shoulders when freshly washed and conditioned. It was the best thing I could ever do to my hair and now I'm hair goals to the relatives and others who used to talk about me!!

You would not believe the money you save walking away from it all. Between going to the beauty shops ( perms) or going to get my hair braided ( when I first went natural). I have saved sooooooooo much money. It forced me to learn how to take care of my hair. My hair is so much healthier. My guy and my Dad love it. My Mom encouraged me. My sisters we are so beautiful on our own. It's hard to walk away at first. Now I don't even think about it.

Anthony Jackson Its not easy. Thank you for the encouragement, but it's not easy. Unless you are blessed to grow up in a household that they know how to handle our hair in its natural state. You will not learn how and will easily get a perm or start in on weave. Its quick and easy and you don't have to think about it. It may start off as brain washing, but I think that a long work week is hard enough without having to fight in the morning with hair you don't understand. Unless you get older and learn how, or someone else can get to you and show you. I am not shocked at all with the amount of weave in the black community. Just keep encouraging and loving on the people around you. My husband just spent the night watching me untangle and oil and twist my hair up since I wore it out in an afro all day.And honey I have thick kinky "break a comb in half hair" LOL. Trust me I was not trying to be some sexy girl from the cream of nature commercials. A sister was trying to tie up her hair so I would not have to comb it out later! Hahaha!! But my guy still jumped me and loved all over me. Do all brothers to that for their women. when our hair is not fried, dyed and layer to the side are we still beautiful and sexy? I have my daughter embracimg her hair. I'm Dominican. I had my first relaxer at the age of 5 and every year after that till the age of 16. I've fried, dyed and balded one too many times. Last year while braiding my daughter's hair, she says,"why do you care so much,? It's just hair. I go to school to learn, who cares how I look?" She inspired me. Now we both rock out natural curls and kinks. Were conditioned to believe that natural isn't beautiful....dont get me started on makeup.
I'm a stylist so I do my own hair most of the time. But every now and then I let someone else style it for me. There's nothing wrong with letting someone style it for you. Just like there's nothing wrong with wearing weaves. But ppl ( both stylist and clients) have to learn not to over do it. With the tightness and with the amount of time that the weave is in. Let your hair breath and take care of it when it's covered up
Hundreds? Try thousands.... I wore weaves since HS then one day I realized how much it's damaging my hair. Weaves consist of friction, glue, tightness and all sorts of shit. "Protective styles" aren't really protective unless you consistently take care of your hair underneath.... I have done tons of research on how to care for my afro hair since we really aren't educated. It took me awhile to learn my hair personally but I finally got it right. This is the healthiest my 4c hair has been and its so beautiful!! The problem is, we are uneducated about out hair. That's why people assume black people can't have "good hair." Any type of hair can be good when it's well taken care of. I advise all women of color to learn their hair- the texture, the porosity, if it needs protein or moisturizer- all kinds of research.. BE PATIENT it took me 7 months to get it right... I always thought my hair was nappy and ugly until I took care of it and all of the sudden I have gorgeous tight coily curls! EDIT- AVOID SALONS.
As soon as you feel the "stylist" braiding the hair too tight, RUN!!!!!..... I see many black women in the next 5 years going to Trichologists for treatment but it will be too late .
Maybe it's easier for them because I am trying to figure out why they like to braid it too tight. I've seen women with puss at the edges from the braids being too tight. And I remember when Stella got her groove back, she used to love getting her hair braided because it was like getting a face lift with those tight braids pulling her hair and she looked better with her younger man.

I've only worn a weave twice in my life and I'm 38 years old. I've been sporting my natural 4b hair after ditching relaxers. I'd rather put that money into retirement than to waste it on weaves or treatment for baldness.
my stylist convinced me to try a weave. I had to take it out 3 weeks later. I listened to my body. By that I mean I had migraines and I couldn't get to my scalp properly. I was afraid of what may be happening. Thankfully no damage but my own hair smelled so bad. It took about 4 days of cleaning and deep conditioning to get rid of the smell. Never again and I told my stylist this too.

its called gross neglect and stupidity. when I had a perm I grew my hair past my shoulders. never had my edges come out either. these women u see just get any kind of weave and then leave it in for months neglecting their natural hair!
Kiiee -- I hope you are putting in your own perms. For perming from teenager (say 14) to adulthood (maybe 35) will certain do damage over time. Many Black women get to 50 or 60 and their hair just will not grow due to the excessive perming, blow drying & flat iron/curling iron use. Or one bad perm -- left in too long can make it fall out. So calculate 6 touch ups a year at just 20 years timeline = 120 salon or perming sessions. 40 years = 240 sessions. Too much perm & too many years!!

We spend more on weaves than we do on educating ourselves on how to care for and manage our natural hair. Black women, we are getting pay day loans for weaves, that's a problem.
My hair start growing after I got rid of my weave. I wear locs and at a age where most women are losing their hair, my hair is growing at an alarming rate.
It just saddens me that we are raising generations of black women who value how their hair looks than what's going on inside their heads. No more mother daughter bonding moments while getting a good head scratching. No more learning how to do our own hair and being proud of it. Putting perms and weaves in little girls heads when they are way too young. Our mothers took pride in doing our hair. I remember it was a rite of passage to get a perm. We had until we were in high school to get one. I waited until well after college because of the cost. We are spending an inordinate amount of money getting hair and nails done. It took me a long time to understand the correlation between emphasis on looks and the low self-esteem in my students when I taught school. Now, after 35 years, I just get sadder and sadder. We criticize and hate on each other because of our hair choices. We allow others who don't care about us to dictate our hair choices. We spend waayyy too much money on getting our hair done-one day short and blonde, next day long and black. Next day, curly and red. It is not just the hair but nails, clothes, and tattoos. Can we at least save some money for houses, careers, education, travel, and retirement? We can still be fabulous but within our means and limits. Good God, black women are more beautiful than we know of ourselves.

You can tell from looking at old movie, TV shows and photos that wigs, and falls (attached hair) were very prevalent. However, black women as a whole, spend more time and money on their hair than any culture. We buy bundles of hair of all textures to wear on our heads. We put relaxers in children's hair too early along weaves, color, beads, etc. We show signs of balding and alopecia at an earlier age. This is not me talking, this from industry family findings. This is why you find so many beauty supply stores owned by others but primarily shopped by black people. Older companies such as Sally Beauty main customer base is now women of color. Historically, black people have had love/hate relationships with hair. Black women are referred to as nappy headed even white media. Black men seem to frown on women with natural hair. Even black women with natural hair augment the styles with buying more hair. Yet, other people use wigs, weaves, etc., but our culture has taken hair to another dimension.

@@serenesrn3827 Me neither. Just like family gatherings and story telling, we have lost our culture. Remember when our moms, aunts, sisters, cousins, would scratch our scalps and do our heads? Some of the most meaningful interactions were done then. I could talk to my mom uninterrupted about things going on with me. She would lovingly scratch my dandruff, brush it out and plait or braid my hair. She would poke around my head, neck, face and ears for whatever. I loved having that time with her since she was so busy working, going to school, and raising her brood. Later on my sisters learned to cornrows in different styles to earn money. My older cousins used to hot comb and curl our hair to make money. On Saturdays most porches were filled with your neighbors and family waiting to get their hair "did". My sisters were wizards with the cornrows. Some of our girlfriends would get jealous because their boyfriends would be at our house getting their hair done. They hung around afterwards to listen to music, play cards, and eat my mom's cooking. We were the neighborhood house. I miss those times 😥!!

Try, telling that to ladies whose hair only grows so long and then stops, or they just have super thin hair. That, can NEVER make a woman feel as confident as she did when her hair was thicker. Most, women just want to look as good as they can and it's EASY for people who can grow a thick, full head of hair to talk negatively about them. My friend lost ALL of her hair from having chemo and she was so depressed. MORE, about losing her hair than being treated for her curable cancer. So, it makes a difference but people whose hair grows without any problem, or they have never lost all, some, or most of their hair, have NO CLUE what it means to these women to be able to wear some hair. They are NOT putting in weave in right. Plus, if it was already getting bad... why didn't they stop. Anyway, if you want to put in weave, do not use sew ins ,in my opinion, use crochet braids. Also, make sure that the stylist doesn't braid it too tight, don't be afraid to tell them.
Never worn weave, glue ins, extentions. Have worn wigs but only because I lost my hair to chemo. It grew back tho. But women who have been wearing sew in weaves will often have an obvious receeding hairline. Often you'll see a lady with beautiful hair down to the middle of her back but her forehead is HUGE because her natural hairline is gone... damaged from constant weaves being installed. Sometimes it's permanent & will never grow back. I'd think wigs, lace front wigs are a far better choice than weaves. At least wigs won't tear out your natural edges.

I had my hair braided twice and it was so uncomfortable the second time that I took my hair down in the middle of the night because I could not sleep. Years later I learned to do my own hair and did not braid my hair tight for fear of losing my edges. My hair grew to the middle of my back with no damage. I wish others knew about this.
Clip ins are the safest and most natural looking. You keep your hair and the extensions clean and styled and take the extensions out every single night. I wish more black women would start using those instead of sewn in weave. Those braids are too tight. I'm a hairstylist just my opinion. But you do have to have some length for it to work and that starts with taking care of your natural hair and not trying to cover it up and neglect it like these horror stories

Andrea Reeves buy natural looking hair. Hair that looks most like your own hair as is. I make my own clip ins so I can get exactly what I want. My hair is on the straight side naturally and with a bit of poof (that I like) so I buy hair along the lines if kanekalon, straight with a poofy texture. Get good clips though. My first set was perfect but then I used them in a pinch to make clips for my daughter. Bought more and though they LOOKED better, they slide out of my hair, I don't braid underneath I just clip into my own free hair. But yeah get it close to your own if you're not braiding your hair. If you are braiding it, doesn't matter
my aunt is colombian and she has wavy natural hair she lost all her beautiful hair from clip ins those clip ins are bad too because they also pull your hair out and it starts thinning maybe y'all don't notice it now
Even clip ins cause problems. A lot of these white RUclipsrs have hair that is thinning and balding from getting clip-ins too frequently. E.g. Trisha Paytas and Tana Mongeau. Even Kim Kardashian has bald spots when she has her natural hair out.
I can't imagine going weeks or months without shampooing my hair right down to the scalp. It must get really nasty, itchy and smelly under there. Build up of dandruff,bacterial and fungus infections? Disgusting!

For women with kinky hair, wear locs or natural hair. If you must wear weaves, only do so for a special occasion so that the weave can be removed after only a few days or a week. Long-term wearing of weaves is what is damaging to the natural hair.

I currently wear wigs because I lost my hair during chemotherapy. In the past, I had beautiful hair and occasionally wore a weave. Even when I wore a weave, my hair grew underneath because I did my own sew-ins and did not sew them tightly. I believe that their hair is being damaged because it is being sewn in too tightly, and they are not properly maintaining moisture beneath it.
People with natural hair also do not take care of their hair. My hairstylist who trims my natural hair has told me horror stories from both ends of the spectrum.
Black women need to know how to take care of their hair underneath a weave. They also need to stop braiding their hair way too tight. I have have my hair in for a month with "lose" braids. Then tight braids that pull on my edges.

All weaves are not created equal. Be good to your weave, and your weave will be good to you. Hair enhancement styles should not be a substitute for taking care of the natural hair and scalp. Anything woven too tightly is going to pull on the follicles causing issues, and the repeated use of glues, chemicals, and heat application is a sure way to guaranteed damage.
Lynn, I agree. I have been wearing weave for more than 10 years. I go for a re-install every 2 months and I care for my natural hair. My natural hair goes down to the middle of my back - but it is not thick enough for the styles I want. I have my stylist keep my top and edges out so they will not break off. I have never had a problem. It's all in how you maintain your hair - and going to a good stylist on a regular basis - that's the key.

People damage their own hair and scalp. Weave is innocent and has no action! Most people that wear hair weave are psychologically believing that the weave is their own and don't maintenance and care for their own natural hair and scalp. If you constantly wearing weave and can't go without it then you are mentally addicted to it and need serious rehab. I met a woman at a beauty salon back in the 90s and she stated that her husband of many years had never seen her natural hair/head and while confessing to this she had a beautiful style she was wearing and and when it was time for the beautician to do her hair this woman head/scalp was seriously damaged. She stated that she would always allow the beautician to do different styles so her husband really didn't think twice. She explained that he just thought.......🚿 of it as my wife loved to get her hair done.
just wear wigs with undercap clips and glue the lace front to your forehead so it is a lot harder for it to fallout and it is better than sitting in a chair for 5 hours.

I can say this much it's not always the medical term alopecia. There's more to it. Some stylists braid too tight, leave products on too long, prick your head with the needle too much, not following removal methods, and so forth. For example, if you wear lace wigs, don't just snatch it off your head. You're pulling out your sides. Take your time and wet it so the glue can gently detach from the hair without pulling it out of your follicles.

I'm so tired of people using the term "Protective style" . It makes absolutely no sense. What exactly are you protecting ? Your scalp from oxygen and the sun ? I fail to see how gluing, sewing and/or tethering on chemically treated hair or synthetic hair is beneficial in any way shape or form. I have 4c grade hair - why is it longer than every weave woman I've come across when I've only been growing it out for 3 years ? I've never needed a "protective style". There are literally hundreds of women online who have attested to the dangers of weave. The woman in this video has acknowledged that she's going bald and has a bald relative - yet she is STILL weaving it up in this video. You guys are worse than drug addicts who try to justify substance abuse - at least they don't claim its beneficial
Completely agree! For me when I was a loose natural (I have sisterlocks now), protective styling was wearing two strand twists with my natural hair. I easily grew my hair out to waist length by just taking care of it without weaves and extensions. Since I primarily wore two strand twists, Sisterlocks was the logical next step for me and I’m loving it!
Extensions and weave are the same. How it's installed is different. Black women often have the weave glued in or sewed in. Other races have the weave pinned in or infused in, which is less damaging. Generally, black women don't take care of the hair underneath the weave. Not all but most. I, myself don't wear weave. In any case, how in the world do you let someone braid your hair so tightly, that it pulls out your hair and cause scar tissue? How in the world do you wear weave and neglect your hair, black women?
You just have to take care of your hair that's the trick to it ..know your own hair too..what it can and cant take...a lot of people are getting into the hair business and don't really have knowledge on how to take care of hair.. and it depends on your hair I don't recommend leaving a sew-in in your hair for 3 to 4 months I leave my weave in for one or maybe one and a half close to two months when I do my hair I leave a lot of things out like I braid my natural hair I don't add weave to my braids and I do not wear the weave caps I just braids and sew...that breaths better and if wet you can blow dry it dry...that glue took my hair out out...

I cut my hair back in 2013, let it grow back, went natural for 2 years, put a perm the beginning of last summer, bern wearing weave ponytails and just wore a wig. I just washed my hair and it's inches past my shoulders. Nobody touches my hair but me, now every blue moon I may get my hair done but opt out because I have really good hair and nobody knows how to do it right.
not everybody can do hair weave. you have to be careful who you let touch your hair. for one, the braids could be braided to right around the edges....which can definitely pull your hair out. It could be a number of things. I had sew ins and it never took my hair out. people just have to be careful of who they let do they're hair. even when it comes down to their natural hair.

I tried my best to save her real hair but her mind set was "oh well I'll buy more hair"....smh
I remember walking into an Asian hair store with my mom and sister once and there was a wig there that I loved so much. My hair at the time didn't even reach my shoulders and it was way too damaged(on the ends) to straighten. So instead of saving enough money to buy the wig, I decided to try growing my hair long and healthy. The other kids and some of my relatives always liked to talk about my hair at the time because protecting it wasn't so pretty, plus I'm naturally curly. Now it's been a few years and my hair is very full, very healthy, and even longer than the wig I wanted so bad!! The wig would've stopped at my collar bones but now my real hair stops at about mid-back when straightened and below my shoulders when freshly washed and conditioned. It was the best thing I could ever do to my hair and now I'm hair goals to the relatives and others who used to talk about me!!

I have saved sooooooooo much money. It forced me to learn how to take care of my hair. My hair is so much healthier. My guy and my Dad love it. My Mom encouraged me. You will not learn how and will easily get a perm or start in on weave. Its quick and easy and you don't have to think about it. It may start off as brain washing, but I think that a long work week is hard enough without having to fight in the morning with hair you don't understand. Unless you get older and learn how, or someone else can get to you and show you. I am not shocked at all with the amount of weave in the black community. My husband just spent the night watching me untangle and oil and twist my hair up since I wore it out in an afro all day.And honey I have thick kinky "break a comb in half hair" LOL. Trust me I was not trying to be some sexy girl from the cream of nature commercials. A sister was trying to tie up her hair so I would not have to comb it out later! Hahaha!! But my guy still jumped me and loved all over me. Do all brothers to that for their women. when our hair is not fried, dyed and layer to the side are we still beautiful and sexy? I have my daughter embracimg her hair. I'm Dominican. I had my first relaxer at the age of 5 and every year after that till the age of 16. I've fried, dyed and balded one too many times. Last year while braiding my daughter's hair, she says,"why do you care so much,? It's just hair. I go to school to learn, who cares how I look?" She inspired me. Now we both rock out natural curls and kinks. Were conditioned to believe that natural isn't beautiful....dont get me started on makeup.
I'm a stylist so I do my own hair most of the time. But every now and then I let someone else style it for me. There's nothing wrong with letting someone style it for you. Just like there's nothing wrong with wearing weaves. But ppl ( both stylist and clients) have to learn not to over do it. With the tightness and with the amount of time that the weave is in. Hundreds? Try thousands.... I wore weaves since HS then one day I realized how much it's damaging my hair. Weaves consist of friction, glue, tightness and all sorts of shit. "Protective styles" aren't really protective unless you consistently take care of your hair underneath.... I have done tons of research on how to care for my afro hair since we really aren't educated. It took me awhile to learn my hair personally but I finally got it right. This is the healthiest my 4c hair has been and its so beautiful!! The problem is, we are uneducated about out hair. That's why people assume black people can't have "good hair." Any type of hair can be good when it's well taken care of. I advise all women of color to learn their hair- the texture, the porosity, if it needs protein or moisturizer- all kinds of research.. BE PATIENT it took me 7 months to get it right... I always thought my hair was nappy and ugly until I took care of it and all of the sudden I have gorgeous tight coily curls! EDIT- AVOID SALONS.
As soon as you feel the "stylist" braiding the hair too tight, RUN!!!!!..... I see many black women in the next 5 years going to Trichologists for treatment but it will be too late .

Maybe it's easier for them because I am trying to figure out why they like to braid it too tight. I've seen women with puss at the edges from the braids being too tight. And I remember when Stella got her groove back, she used to love getting her hair braided because it was like getting a face lift with those tight braids pulling her hair and she looked better with her younger man.

my stylist convinced me to try a weave. I had to take it out 3 weeks later. I listened to my body. By that I mean I had migraines and I couldn't get to my scalp properly. I was afraid of what may be happening. Thankfully no damage but my own hair smelled so bad. It took about 4 days of cleaning and deep conditioning to get rid of the smell. Never again and I told my stylist this too.
Same, I did a hair weave and only lasted a few weeks. It’s difficult to wash the hair underneath and it ends up smelling.

Kiiee -- I hope you are putting in your own perms. For perming from teenager (say 14) to adulthood (maybe 35) will certain do damage over time. Many Black women get to 50 or 60 and their hair just will not grow due to the excessive perming, blow drying & flat iron/curling iron use. Or one bad perm -- left in too long can make it fall out. So calculate 6 touch ups a year at just 20 years timeline = 120 salon or perming sessions. 40 years = 240 sessions. Too much perm & too many years!!

No more mother daughter bonding moments while getting a good head scratching. No more learning how to do our own hair and being proud of it. Putting perms and weaves in little girls heads when they are way too young.
Our mothers took pride in doing our hair. I remember it was a rite of passage to get a perm. We had until we were in high school to get one. I waited until well after college because of the cost. We are spending an inordinate amount of money getting hair and nails done.
It took me a long time to understand the correlation between emphasis on looks and the low self-esteem in my students when I taught school. Now, after 35 years, I just get sadder and sadder. We criticize and hate on each other because of our hair choices.
We allow others who don't care about us to dictate our hair choices. We spend waayyy too much money on getting our hair done-one day short and blonde, next day long and black. Next day, curly and red. It is not just the hair but nails, clothes, and tattoos. Can we at least save some money for houses, careers, education, travel, and retirement?
We can still be fabulous but within our means and limits. Good God, black women are more beautiful than we know of ourselves.

However, black women as a whole, spend more time and money on their hair than any culture. We buy bundles of hair of all textures to wear on our heads. We put relaxers in children's hair too early along weaves, color, beads, etc. We show signs of balding and alopecia at an earlier age. This is not me talking, this from industry family findings.
This is why you find so many beauty supply stores owned by others but primarily shopped by black people. Older companies such as Sally Beauty main customer base is now women of color.
Historically, black people have had love/hate relationships with hair. Black women are referred to as nappy headed even white media. Black men seem to frown on women with natural hair. Even black women with natural hair augment the styles with buying more hair.
Yet, other people use wigs, weaves, etc., but our culture has taken hair to another dimension.

@@serenesrn3827 Me neither. Just like family gatherings and story telling, we have lost our culture. Remember when our moms, aunts, sisters, cousins, would scratch our scalps and do our heads? Some of the most meaningful interactions were done then. I could talk to my mom uninterrupted about things going on with me. She would lovingly scratch my dandruff, brush it out and plait or braid my hair. She would poke around my head, neck, face and ears for whatever.
I loved having that time with her since she was so busy working, going to school, and raising her brood. Later on my sisters learned to cornrows in different styles to earn money. My older cousins used to hot comb and curl our hair to make money. On Saturdays most porches were filled with your neighbors and family waiting to get their hair "did". My sisters were wizards with the cornrows. Some of our girlfriends would get jealous because their boyfriends would be at our house getting their hair done. They hung around afterwards to listen to music, play cards, and eat my mom's cooking. We were the neighborhood house. I miss those times 😥!!

Most, women just want to look as good as they can and it's EASY for people who can grow a thick, full head of hair to talk negatively about them. My friend lost ALL of her hair from having chemo and she was so depressed. MORE, about losing her hair than being treated for her curable cancer. So, it makes a difference but people whose hair grows without any problem, or they have never lost all, some, or most of their hair, have NO CLUE what it means to these women to be able to wear some hair. They are NOT putting in weave in right. Plus, if it was already getting bad... why didn't they stop. Anyway, if you want to put in weave, do not use sew ins ,in my opinion, use crochet braids. Also, make sure that the stylist doesn't braid it too tight, don't be afraid to tell them.

Never worn weave, glue ins, extentions. Have worn wigs but only because I lost my hair to chemo. It grew back tho.
But women who have been wearing sew in weaves will often have an obvious receeding hairline. Often you'll see a lady with beautiful hair down to the middle of her back but her forehead is HUGE because her natural hairline is gone... damaged from constant weaves being installed. Sometimes it's permanent & will never grow back. I'd think wigs, lace front wigs are a far better choice than weaves. At least wigs won't tear out your natural edges.

I had my hair braided twice and it was so uncomfortable the second time that I took my hair down in the middle of the night because I could not sleep. Years later I learned to do my own hair and did not braid my hair tight for fear of losing my edges. My hair grew to the middle of my back with no damage. I wish others knew about this.
Me too! 2nd and very last time I wore it. It costs an arm and a leg but best believe I took it down.

Clip ins are the safest and most natural looking. You keep your hair and the extensions clean and styled and take the extensions out every single night. I wish more black women would start using those instead of sewn in weave. Those braids are too tight. I'm a hairstylist just my opinion. But you do have to have some length for it to work and that starts with taking care of your natural hair and not trying to cover it up and neglect it like these horror stories
Clip ins mean you're more likely to put heat on your hair .weaves are protective, It's all about how the weave is installed .

Andrea Reeves buy natural looking hair. Hair that looks most like your own hair as is. I make my own clip ins so I can get exactly what I want. My hair is on the straight side naturally and with a bit of poof (that I like) so I buy hair along the lines if kanekalon, straight with a poofy texture. Get good clips though. My first set was perfect but then I used them in a pinch to make clips for my daughter. Bought more and though they LOOKED better, they slide out of my hair, I don't braid underneath I just clip into my own free hair. But yeah get it close to your own if you're not braiding your hair. If you are braiding it, doesn't matter
my aunt is colombian and she has wavy natural hair she lost all her beautiful hair from clip ins those clip ins are bad too because they also pull your hair out and it starts thinning maybe y'all don't notice it now
Even clip ins cause problems. A lot of these white RUclipsrs have hair that is thinning and balding from getting clip-ins too frequently. E.g. Trisha Paytas and Tana Mongeau. Even Kim Kardashian has bald spots when she has her natural hair out.
I can't imagine going weeks or months without shampooing my hair right down to the scalp. It must get really nasty, itchy and smelly under there. Build up of dandruff,bacterial and fungus infections? Disgusting!

For women with kinky hair, wear locs or natural hair. If you must wear weaves, only do so for a special occasion so that the weave can be removed after only a few days or a week. Long-term wearing of weaves is what is damaging to the natural hair.

I currently wear wigs because I lost my hair during chemotherapy. In the past, I had beautiful hair and occasionally wore a weave. Even when I wore a weave, my hair grew underneath because I did my own sew-ins and did not sew them tightly.
I believe that their hair is being damaged because it is being sewn in too tightly, and they are not properly maintaining moisture beneath it.

All weaves are not created equal. Be good to your weave, and your weave will be good to you. Hair enhancement styles should not be a substitute for taking care of the natural hair and scalp. Anything woven too tightly is going to pull on the follicles causing issues, and the repeated use of glues, chemicals, and heat application is a sure way to guaranteed damage.
Lynn, I agree. I have been wearing weave for more than 10 years. I go for a re-install every 2 months and I care for my natural hair. My natural hair goes down to the middle of my back - but it is not thick enough for the styles I want. I have my stylist keep my top and edges out so they will not break off. I have never had a problem. It's all in how you maintain your hair - and going to a good stylist on a regular basis - that's the key.

People damage their own hair and scalp. Weave is innocent and has no action! Most people that wear hair weave are psychologically believing that the weave is their own and don't maintenance and care for their own natural hair and scalp. If you constantly wearing weave and can't go without it then you are mentally addicted to it and need serious rehab. I met a woman at a beauty salon back in the 90s and she stated that her husband of many years had never seen her natural hair/head and while confessing to this she had a beautiful style she was wearing and and when it was time for the beautician to do her hair this woman head/scalp was seriously damaged. She stated that she would always allow the beautician to do different styles so her husband really didn't think twice. She explained that he just thought.......🚿 of it as my wife loved to get her hair done.

I can say this much it's not always the medical term alopecia. There's more to it. Some stylists braid too tight, leave products on too long, prick your head with the needle too much, not following removal methods, and so forth. For example, if you wear lace wigs, don't just snatch it off your head. You're pulling out your sides. Take your time and wet it so the glue can gently detach from the hair without pulling it out of your follicles.

I'm so tired of people using the term "Protective style" . It makes absolutely no sense. What exactly are you protecting ? Your scalp from oxygen and the sun ? I fail to see how gluing, sewing and/or tethering on chemically treated hair or synthetic hair is beneficial in any way shape or form. I have 4c grade hair - why is it longer than every weave woman I've come across when I've only been growing it out for 3 years ? I've never needed a "protective style".
There are literally hundreds of women online who have attested to the dangers of weave. The woman in this video has acknowledged that she's going bald and has a bald relative - yet she is STILL weaving it up in this video. You guys are worse than drug addicts who try to justify substance abuse - at least they don't claim its beneficial

Completely agree! For me when I was a loose natural (I have sisterlocks now), protective styling was wearing two strand twists with my natural hair. I easily grew my hair out to waist length by just taking care of it without weaves and extensions. Since I primarily wore two strand twists, Sisterlocks was the logical next step for me and I’m loving it!
Most people knows the danger of weave but, still will wear it because of low self esteem!

Extensions and weave are the same. How it's installed is different. Black women often have the weave glued in or sewed in. Other races have the weave pinned in or infused in, which is less damaging. Generally, black women don't take care of the hair underneath the weave. Not all but most. I, myself don't wear weave. In any case, how in the world do you let someone braid your hair so tightly, that it pulls out your hair and cause scar tissue? How in the world do you wear weave and neglect your hair, black women?
You just have to take care of your hair that's the trick to it ..know your own hair too..what it can and cant take...a lot of people are getting into the hair business and don't really have knowledge on how to take care of hair.. and it depends on your hair I don't recommend leaving a sew-in in your hair for 3 to 4 months I leave my weave in for one or maybe one and a half close to two months when I do my hair I leave a lot of things out like I braid my natural hair I don't add weave to my braids and I do not wear the weave caps I just braids and sew...that breaths better and if wet you can blow dry it dry...that glue took my hair out out...

I cut my hair back in 2013, let it grow back, went natural for 2 years, put a perm the beginning of last summer, bern wearing weave ponytails and just wore a wig. I just washed my hair and it's inches past my shoulders. Nobody touches my hair but me, now every blue moon I may get my hair done but opt out because I have really good hair and nobody knows how to do it right.
No desire for weaves etc . In cases of medical treatments, understandable. No judgement of others . My natural hair is part of me.

not everybody can do hair weave. you have to be careful who you let touch your hair. for one, the braids could be braided to right around the edges....which can definitely pull your hair out. It could be a number of things. I had sew ins and it never took my hair out. people just have to be careful of who they let do they're hair. even when it comes down to their natural hair.
