    I used to call the older models "singing trains" because of their unique and beautiful sound. That is what a real high speed train is supposed to sound like.

  • @User-3O3

    The sound of a Class 373 passing at speed is one of the greatest sounds I have ever heard in my life. The aesthetics of the 373 are timeless - it looked like something from of the future in 1994 and still does more than 25 years later. While the 374 might be an all-round superior design to its predecessor; it can never live up to its pedigree.

    • @Yoshi-wt4lg
      @Yoshi-wt4lg 2 года назад +6

      its not really a superior design. In terms of being a high speed train, the TMST is better than the SIemens (In design, the TMST is both more stable and comfortable during high speeds, and also safer). But the Siemens has more seats and is wider (because it didnt have to follow british loading guage).

    From an external perspective at speed, the 373's in the new livery (absolutely unbeatable sound) just beats the 374's. However, from a passanger and engineering perspective, the 374 is better. Both are incredible trains though.

    • @basictransportenthusiast4386
      @basictransportenthusiast4386 6 лет назад +6

      Chris Holloway I rode in a 374 as a passenger and it was rattly loud and very rock hard and uncomfortable. It vibrates too much and I just did not find it fun to sit in for 5 hours. The 373 is very comfy and is spacious. The 373 rides a lot smoother and doesn’t vibrate. But I would agree that the engineer would like the 374 better

    • @dansolo6417
      @dansolo6417 4 года назад +2

      @@basictransportenthusiast4386 I guess the new models are quicker and hold more people which means more money (and less comfort) on each journey which is what they want as it's a business after all and they probably designed better in terms of less defects that bugged the original Eurostars and probably the reason why they reached the end of their lives so soon.
      aesthetically the Alstrom units looked way better and i loved the sounds it makes when at high speeds!

    • @pirozcontractor6006
      @pirozcontractor6006 4 года назад +3

      @@dansolo6417 The sets for the 373 were articulated, hence the much smoother ride. The E320, however, reverted to traditional two bogie carriage sets which might explain the rattly ride. If I say so myself, it comes off as a bit of a backwards design step.

    • @Yoshi-wt4lg
      @Yoshi-wt4lg 3 года назад

      The new one isn't "better" but cheaper to maintain, the old ones actually are safer in a lot of ways, but were to expensive and required too much maintenance compared to the new ones.
      And the new ones actually are less energy efficient because they consume 10% more energy than the old ones.

    Actually, I prefer the look and the general level of passenger comfort (seats and interior appointments) of the Siemens trainsets, but the ride quality of the old Alstom trainsets is far superior. This is best experienced inside the Eurotunnel itself: There, the Alstom trainsets felt like they were stationary. Inside the blackness of the tunnel, there were few motion queues to indicate the speed that you were traveling. However, the Seimens trainsets have all the motion and track sway that you would experience on normally exposed tracks...

    Am I acvtually one of those people that don't hate on both of them?
    I like both of them.
    Likes of e320:
    Nice aerodynamics, looks modern.
    Has more seats, and is longer.
    The right requirements to go to the Netherlands(which it is)
    A cool sound when it departs.
    Can go up to 320km/h.
    Likes of TMST:
    Really nice sound when it departs.
    Old, but fast.
    They look pretty cool.
    It just has that..thing to it.
    When you pass it, it goes either wooowooowooo, or vevevee(I cannot reproduce the sounds)
    Can go up to 300km/h. (Not as fast as the e320s, mind you.)
    Both of them are good in my opinion.

    The problem i have is the og livery and logo was better imo if thet wanted to update it maybe make the doors a destinct colour to help the blind but secondly the thing i like about the alstom tmst e300/br373 is how it built on the arguably better platform of the tgv (and i still think its better than the siemens units even if the modern designs are fugly) but also the old units were a joint venture between gec in the UK, alstom in france and BN in Belgium providing jobs for the 3 contries in which the units would be serving, selling the job off to siemens seems like a low blow for a europe that is supposed to be working together yet all the orders seem to be going to siemens at the expense of the workers in the countries in which these units serve

    Moi les TMST sont mes rames préférées parce que ce sont des rames qui ressemble à notre TGV français et puis j'aime bien le bruit à grande vitesse.

The Velaro Eurostar instead sounds a little bit boring but more continous and silent. Maybe good for people which are affected from the track noise.

    Does anyone know why the E320 dispensed with the Jacobs bogey design? I found it really good for moving between carriages compared with the split design (which I have only experienced on the Shinkansen).

    • @ErebosSan
      @ErebosSan  7 лет назад

      On TMST/E300, powered bogies are located at each end of the train and Jacobs bogies are used between trailer cars. E320 uses distributed traction, that gives more space for passengers, but it is hard to comply with a maximum axle load of 17 tons (limit for high speed lines) with Jacobs bogies.

      ErebosSan Okay thanks but aren't the E300 carriages shorter to compensate for that?

    • @ErebosSan
      @ErebosSan  7 лет назад

      yes they are (E300: 18.7m; E320: 24.2m)

    It appears that the class 374's have more pantographs than the 373's, but i was expecting at least 4, seems to be more than that

    • @ErebosSan
      @ErebosSan  7 лет назад

      A class 374 trainset has 8 pantographs: one for each current system (25 kVac, 15 kVac, 3 kVdc, 1.5 kVdc), all duplicated for redundancy.

    I love the design of the old Eurostar. The new one looks a bit fat to me. I just prefer 20th century aesthetics, it seems.
    I assume these are all in France? I'm British and I noticed there doesn't seem to be much fencing to protect the track. I've just read about a eurostar colliding with a wild boar in France; I doubt that would happen here, even if we had wild boar. Certainly here in London the railways are protected like fortresses.
    Nice camerawork by the way, could go on TV!

      You're right, an Eurostar train hit a boar near Calais last November. High speed lines are always protected by fences (see at 1:24). Perhaps was there a damaged fence?

    I Live near Didcot Oxfordshire, were they are just installing the gantries for electrifying the line . I would like to know why it is that the Eurostar lines gantries are just like street lampposts (unobtrusive ) were as the ones going in at Didcot are great big ugly heavy steel girders. Are us brits being 'RIPPED OFF AGAIN '

    The original Eurostar is a real train with just a little less place but that's it. With those trains it happened once in a year that a train was cancelled. With these pieces of rubbish of Siemens (made cheaper) there's a train cancelled almost every day. I've been told there are problems to arrange the temperature inside of the vehicles plus very often bathrooms are out of use. Back in the days I went to London from Brussels 4 to 6 times a year. My last time was in 2019, Eurostar is no more and nor is my love for it.

    Eurostar 320 is better because its up to date tech. It looks much sleeker, more energy effecient, and carries more passenger, which means more money for Eurostar. The cars are longer than Class 373. 373 was sucked because it corroded very fast.

    The new design of the Eurostar e320 is fussy and bizarre. There are fewer seats with window views than the previous model e300 ....but I note that the luggage racks are next to windows. Unbelievable! Was this model actually designed by a person or by a robot?
