Could not agree with this more! It's often over-looked in the perceived world of just trying to get singles, or content around singles to 'go viral' or trend....longer term thinking is key and a sonic identity it part of that!!

that phenomenon of listening to a song without knowing who composed the piece but immediately knowing that "ah this is a John Williams piece, or Hans Zimmer, Thomas Newman, Hiroyuki Sawano, Joe Hisaishi, Kevin Penkin" etc. They each have their own nuances whether it's using s similar variation of an orchestration technique, arrangement, a melody lick, a use of a particular mode (lydian with Thomas Newman) etc. Where can I go about to study more about this particular subject?

Yes, that's exactly it. Listeners can tell if a recording sounds like a particular artist. It's important artists recognise the need to have their own sound and identity. I don't know where else you can go to learn more about this. Not enough people talk about it. We think it's a really important subject that is overlooked by many of the artists we work with. Appreciate your comment, and good luck with your own development and study

I think it is directly related to the equipment we use…and problem is that not really a lot of new equipment (and how it was/is used) is out there. That is why we got and still have loudness wars…because it is actually the only thing out there that can be implemented these days in order to stand out.
I don’t think that we have explored everything but we are at the point where there isn’t a lot left for exploration. Equipment has been abused in all sorts of ways in the last 3 decades.

so intelligently said. think about all of the geniuses in pop, rock, folk. they all brought their own twist to a genre, and worked at creating music that had their own signature to it, whether it was their melodies (beatles), harmonies (everly bros), lyrics and singing style (dylan), take on existing style or mix of styles (nirvana punk+pop) and so on. great insight ser thank you

When I sit down to a session, I never have a plan or a goal…I never use templates, always staring with an empty project…

Absolutely love this video. it is so well explained, ideas well structured, and your videos seem to have this more global perspective than just tackling randomly a few topics here and there in a disorganized way. I am someone who loves Pop music but also love different styles in the pop music. therefore it becomes very difficult to know what direction to take but this video will help me, hopefully, re centering myself back to the foundation before moving forward with marketing strategies etc. and I really love when you make us realize that Sonic identity is even more crucial for emerging artist with no or few audience. I was lost lately but hope this will help for what's gonna come next. Big thanks!

Super helpful video, thank you!!! I’ve released two singles so far, and they have completely different styles, which I realize now through this video was not the smartest choice…! But that is how you learn and improve. So thanks again for this great video!
