I am a contractor. I send in daily reports, send timesheets and all that jazz and since you maybe gone at some point you may not be involved in key decision processes. Oh yea I'm probably getting paid 5/4 or 6/4 more than the employees. Comes with a lot of stress though. You are considered the "expert" on the things you are contracted for so there is no room for error.
100% ACK
As a freelancer I only work with small to mid size companies. 90% is WordPress. Never React (only once for a project, but looking back, React seemed like overkill for that project).
Ive been playing around with php and wordpress a bit wanting to freelance hoping to make about $1000 a month..What are your thoughts?
Ive done brad shiffs wordpress-php course and ive gone thru laracast and brad traversy's php course....
Just start applying for gigs randomly? Im not really happy with upwork or fiverr...
Do you have any suggestions?
So, should I learn PHP also?
Why am I only just learning this now! I just spent the best part of a year learning Frontend and React and now it seems like all I need to know is a CMS. Although im sure the coding skills will come in handy. Im also reading a lot of good things about Webflow so im considering using that instead. And seeing as it is written in JS I wont have to learn PHP.
How do I find freelance work. Can you help me.. you can charge me
@@ferreiradelima96 if WordPress is your focus you can get by with a little PHP knowledge. Stef actually has a nice course.
I am contractor for 7-8 years. Three big companies, allways full year contracts, extended yearly for most of us. Never reported anything else than number of hours (so no explanation ever). Hours never challenged. This is a nice world. There are many such companies. They treat you as intern employees and consider you not more expensive.
And yes react was needed in 2 of those compamies, but I am not react dev
Good job uncle Stef. I need such pieces of advice from experts like you. Keep going. Thank you.
Thanks, you help to clear our ideas 💡
Your familiarity with the tool is very important too. I use React/nextjs for all my web needs and I use other languages/frameworks for more specific use case. Such as Python , Rust, solidity. Which often pipe data back to my React/next projects.
I belong here
I learned React, JavaScript so that is what I use, but I do see that small businesses do not need this from freelancers. Usually they just need something simple, like a wix site or WordPress. The only thing that sucks is that I want to get into a more of a software engineering role, which requires more hardcore programming. And I don't gain that experience from freelance! At least with the clients that I'm getting.
I was in the same boat not long ago. Working with small companies is a good thing. Start to cover all the core features most people would use form other tools (cms, processing payments, and maybe a simple page builder, mailing). Those wix, wordpress etc often come with a lot bloat and features most will never use. You can take the time to build the core features people actually use and even have a better out the gate solutions.. You can deliver a sleeker, faster end product. You'll get faster and have more robust solutions at your fingertips overtime. So I think worth it to use React. Another important thing to think about in freelance is separating yourself. If all the freelancers in your area are offering Wp and wix solutions then your react solution will stand out.
@@billybest5276I have found often times it is actually easier to have a backlog of ready made solutions to common problems while using a tech like react (maybe next.js, whether ssr or just static depending on the project requirements), and just use a headless cms, a lot easier than a big bloated thing like wordpress while using its built in frontend tools (I know you can use wordpress headless, but there are better solutions imo!). The development experience with hot-reloading and the hosting experience of just having your site on a static site host or heroku or whatever (so all you need to do is develop locally then push the code to the github in one command, and it will re-build on the host) I find that way simpler, easier, and faster with far less issues due to incompatible plugins and all that stuff. You just need to obtain that upfront knowledge on how to put it all together and once you are up and running, it is super easy.
Thank you Stef!!! Always love your valuable content. An amazing source of inspiration, invaluable suggestions and guidance that clearly comes from the professional as yourself. I always learn a ton of new stuff from you. God Bless man. Thank you for all your hard work.
Always lot of values thank you a lot uncle steff
Please did you think to make a video about the stack usually used in Canada ?
As always thank you
Freedom depends strongly on the company culture, manager, project and client. I worked on B2B for many Software Houses there were project were I decided how and what to do and other when I was told exactly how to do something. There is some room for "self-realisation".
When somebody becomes a freelancer he have to worry about finding clients and advertising. It required more skills than just coding. If you are just starting everybody would have a better portfolio of projects. I think that path is rougher.
UNcle Steff are you worry about the new law that was implemented in CA that "gives more benefiets" to freelance. Making in the process really hard to see the differences between full time workers and freelancers/contractors.
Question?
What is your opinion about using React/NextJS on the front-end and using Wordpress as a headless CMS on the backend for freelance projects?
I really appreciate your informative content. Thank you for all of your help and guidance……
😁👍🏿✨
I guess depending on the person contracting maybe better than freelancing. I guessing for my particular case I see the pro's in contract work would be gaining real world experience by learning from experienced developers and learning how to function within a team setting environment. BUT I guess the downside would be the employment is short term. I guess it depends on what your end goal would be. BUT I think there is a benefit to both freelancing and contract work. Looking for contract work now since I horrible bombed at freelance work. I may try again later to freelance.
I disagree. You can freelance making Nextjs web applications like e-commerce sites and small company sites with interactive features. The selling point is faster user experience with more security.
Thank you. You really tell us how it is, with no embellishments. This freelance stuff is not an easy thing. It seems to me it's very stressful, with a lot of uncertainty. But perhaps focusing on learning the tech needed that gets the job done as quickly as possible with a robust result is the way to go. React is absolutely an overkill for most jobs, even harmful, by making the whole website depend on Javascript.
Kinda tangential, but should a freelance developer handle the maintenance of the site? Or are you just supposed to hand it to the client? Obviously, different developers do different plans, but I'm just wondering what's the most common.
I partially agree, but by the use of BAAS such as appwrite, supabase, etc, we can freelance any kind of web and mobile apps using the react ecosystem.
Which tech would you work with, if you were trying to get into freelancing now?
Is it also true for Nextjs? Is Nextjs a good choice for freelancer?
Not bad Uncle Steff :)
Assume the same can generally be said with respect to Angular.
Yes.
Not bad uncle Stef

Not too bad Uncle Stefan
Thank you, Uncle Stef. I agree. It's not necessary to be married to a particular stack.
Most western agencies are outsourcing their jobs to freelancers.
As almost always, you're pretty close to the reality...it's my opinion.
I dont think React itself is very good in freelancing where web pages are what you do instead apps, i think it would be more fair to compare wordpress to NextJs , Astro or other web frameworks and for those experience you have on whatever wp or frameworks is the deciding factor what you should use making freelance web sites
I tried to press the two thumbs down but the feature is not working- such disappointment! So I decided to press the like button to live out my frustration! Jk
Coding is dead bros. Learn trades, those are in high demand

I haven't looked at it. But generally it is best that government have a light touch with regards to regulations.
