So there's a cutscene where the Can-Can plays like in Super Mario Land, and Mario has a helicopter like in Wario Land? This game is more vital to Mario lore than I thought.

I remember playing DK Jr. Math in Animal Crossing for the GameCube and it basically recontextualized the experience for me. As it is within Animal Crossing, it makes the game come off as a fun math distraction from the main gameplay. Hahah! So, in that game it’s given me a decent time and kept me somewhat stimulated.
2:25 If you wanna make the connections between games even crazier: Mario is on his helicopter, probably the same as the one in Wario Land while the invincibility theme of Super Mario Land (actually the can can song) is playing, and Wario Land being an spin-off of sorts of SML.
28:10 It looks like DK doesn’t want to be saved and is just messing with his son with the way he swings his arm around tricking his son into dropping the key into the water. That’s messed up.
I never knew that the American version of the arcade game was so hard. Maybe that's why it didn't do so well. I've played the NES version and the Game & Watch Gallery versions. I actually enjoy the G&WG versions more because of the quick pace and score attack. Feels less clunky, too. 8:21 I love how Mario is just smugly standing there with the key, hand in his pocket.
Honest to god, I’m surprised Donkey Kong Jr never got a Commodore 64 port. That thing sold like hotcakes, being the best selling individual computer ever made, so a DK Jr. port for the C64 would be a no-brainer!
There's A Fan Who Made a Fanmade Port of Donkey Kong Junior for the Commodore 64. Although It's Not Official or Doesn't Count Since It's Unofficial, But Damn, I'll Be Surprised This is A Good Faithful Port! I've Seen Some Videos, The Gameplay and Sounds Pretty Great!
There was also this one scam game in the 80s that said to be a copy of DK Jr. For the Commodore 64. After you hit start it told you to enter a password, but there is no right one, it's just a scam game.
Fun fact: DK JR has a cartoon, as does donkey Kong himself. It was part of a block alongside I think Qbert, Packman, and even Frogger of all things back in the 80s
You're correct with it being paired with Q*Bert and Frogger, but the 80s Pac-Man cartoon was made by Hanna-Barbera while DK Jr, DK, Q*Bert, and Frogger (along side a couple others) were produced by Ruby-Spheres. Pac-Man also aired about a year before in 1982 with the others being 1983 if I remember.
It was also the worst cartoon in that block by a long shot. Basically a cheap knockoff of the "Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo" shorts with Junior in the role of Scrappy and invented-for-the-show character Bones in the role of Shaggy (with no Scooby character). Junior was a catchphrase-spouting ball of annoyance and Bones was a bumbling idiot that rarely contributed much of worth. They fought crime. And by "they" I mean Junior fought crime and Bones bungled his attempts up. Somehow Junior was still the more annoying one of the duo.
You're not kidding about that being a lot of donkey Kong Jr. There's more donkey Kong Jr in this video than any attention that's been given to him by Nintendo and almost 20 years. Awesome video once again!
26:25 Yo, that's the seagull from Wario Land 2! Actually, for some reason the Game & Watch Gallery games have a couple of references to that game. One of them even has Wario's big-boobied chicken in it. 😂
I thought the same thing haha. At one point I thought it was the exact same sprite but I checked and it's not. The chicken appears in G+W 4 on Fire Attack for those curious
I think the problem with walking off ledges can be explained. When people programming a platformer then they put some extra help/cheats to help the player with the game and make it feel less unfair. They code it that when you walk off a ledge you can still jump for a short period of time, that's called "coyote time". I think that might be missing.
And we all know Mrs. Kong was a bit of a bad mother anyway. She doesn't go to the zoo to look at the animals, but to get the animals to look at her. No wonder he gravitates towards his dad.
It’s so weird to think that there’s an official Nintendo game where Mario is the antagonist. Always a shame that DK Jr’s mainly lost to time. Maybe one day he’ll appear in another game.

Incredible breakdown! Believe it or not, there's another officially licensed version you didn't cover that might be worth it's own video. In the 90s and 2000s Nintendo licensed out these little G&W style keychains called Nintendo Mini Classics to a company called Stadlbauer. They looked like tiny Game Boy Pockets and came in a few colors. There were several games including Donkey Kong Junior, Mario's Cement Factory, Parachute, Zelda and Super Mario Bros.
I think you've found a great new niche man, don't really see anyone cover these old ass arcade games and their billion versions! Love watching 'em for the history aspect.
I played the NES version and Donkey Kong Jr. Math as they were unlockable furniture in Animal Crossing on GameCube, and played the version in Game & Watch Gallery 3.
These comparison videos are so much fun, I hope at some time in the future you’d give the Popeye arcade versions a review like this, there’s some that I’d love to hear you talk about.
I'm gonna be honest man, you're amazing with this video format. The thing is that the weird aging makes sense. Apes age much faster than humans. That's why OG Donkey Kong aged to Cranky Kong, while Mario and Pauline only aged by couple years, so they're still young. Mario is Jumpman, that's officially confirmed by Nintendo.

Next you should do a video comparing every single version of Nintendo's Popeye arcade game! Intellivision Limbs flicker because they just took Dk jr's single vine pose and change the side every frame to create the illusion of a new sprite. Kinda cute but also annoying. Maybe it works better on CRT TVs
I won't understand how they weren't able to fit all of the levels in the NES port of Donkey Kong, but could fit all of the levels in the NES port of Donkey Kong Jr.
I know unofficial ports were obviously not gonna be touched on, but I think it would've been hilarious if you'd made an exception for the C64 bootleg that _has no game_ For those curious, after the title screen it plays a "gameplay demo" followed by a prompt asking you to input a password. Not only does no key combination work to bypass this, there is quite literally no game programmed into the thing, the whole thing's a scam
I'm really loving these different game version videos. Im the most nostalgic with thr NES version but yeah i love those game & watch ones theyre really unique
Man, this was a trip! I use to play DK jr on my GBA with my younger brother using the E-Reader and cards on long car rides with the family. DK jr was always in the shadows of the original donkey Kong, but I honestly prefer the second one because it feels more relaxing (imo) whereas the first game is more of a rush to me. Thanks for the memories goomba! 💯
Out of the NES Versions of DK Arcade games I like the compilation one the mpst (DK Classics) because while it is exactly the same on the surface as the standalonr NES ports it actually has some cool game genie codes that really make the games a lot more fun imo like you can make the jumping controls a lot more precise disable the fall damage in DK jr etc.

If I was to guess, it's cos the level in DK has a ton of moving objects/animations with the conveyer belt which was too much for the NES to handle
I know unofficial ports were obviously not gonna be touched on, but I think it would've been hilarious if you'd made an exception for the C64 bootleg that _has no game_
For those curious, after the title screen it plays a "gameplay demo" followed by a prompt asking you to input a password. Not only does no key combination work to bypass this, there is quite literally no game programmed into the thing, the whole thing's a scam
I remember enjoying the retro version of G&W Gallery 4 DK Jr
19:16 I think that’s the angriest I’ve ever heard you.
I'm really loving these different game version videos. Im the most nostalgic with thr NES version but yeah i love those game & watch ones theyre really unique
Can't wait for the DK3 video, maybe even Hudson Soft's early nintendo games.
Amazing video thank you for all the entertainment over the years
I love these every single version videos. It’s made me purchase the arcade versions of a couple games!
WE BE RESCUING DONKEY KONG WITH THIS ONE🔥🔥
Is it wrong to say that I kind of remember the whole intro by memory?
12:44 what is changed from the arcade version that makes it easier?
Poor Jr, the forgotten Kong in the Kong family
I heard somewhere that Jr is donkey Kong and the original donkey Kong became cranky Kong in the country series
Doesn't Jr become the DK from the Country games with his dad becoming Cranky Kong?
I feel like this is the most genuinely angry he’s ever gotten from my memory
The micro BBC joke is comedy gold.
Didn’t know Mario owned a bakery. Guess that explains Yoshi’s Cookie.
Yo Horace
Man, this was a trip! I use to play DK jr on my GBA with my younger brother using the E-Reader and cards on long car rides with the family. DK jr was always in the shadows of the original donkey Kong, but I honestly prefer the second one because it feels more relaxing (imo) whereas the first game is more of a rush to me. Thanks for the memories goomba! 💯
I really like these types of videos but I understand that making them is really difficult so I am extra greatful when they drop
Huh, the helicopter scene seems to be playing the Can Can.
6:12
WHAT HAPPENED TO DONKEY KONG JR
HE LOOKS LIKE A BABY
Best day ever a new video from the lonely goomba
Out of the NES Versions of DK Arcade games I like the compilation one the mpst (DK Classics) because while it is exactly the same on the surface as the standalonr NES ports it actually has some cool game genie codes that really make the games a lot more fun imo like you can make the jumping controls a lot more precise disable the fall damage in DK jr etc.
i played the multiplayer mode with my mom several years ago and like a few months ago
force someone to play this with you, i doubt you'll regret it
DK Jr. Math is actually pretty fun with very drunk friends. It totally deserves those 3 points.
i hope you do more of these "every version of _____" videos, they're really cool!
25:12 how did you check it out anyway? Game and Watch isn’t software so it can’t be emulated. Did you buy one?
They can actually be emulated via MAME now
