The funniest part is that people have claimed that apparently there was enough memory to include the towers and that due to this 911 truthers have concluded that the Deus Ex devs were part of the conspiracy. For.. some reason.
It's sad but also kinda interesting that we can now tell approximately when a movie was made depending on whether or not the towers are there. I watched a movie recently that had a futuristic NYC with the towers still present, it was a 90's movie.
Which at the time (mid 1990s) was taken from a common belief in NYC around 1973-1977 that they were an eyesore and made the city at the time look ugly. Even to the point where postcards and other city apparel would remove the towers from the cityscape. This function harkens back to that era when people did this, only not on a computer. After 1980 and on, the towers grew on New Yorkers and they became a defining feature of the city, eclipsing the Empire State Building.
And needed a specialized dedicated computer and often this was done on specialized hardware so if you wanted a new feature they probably had to add an expansion card or buy a new computer with that function.
Not sure what software this is but Autodesk Flame was a software many commercial edit houses would use and charge multiple thousands per day to the client to sit in the room with the artist.
and that wasn't even Photoshop - I'm not sure if it was a Quantel or some other product, but that was a _really_ expensive piece of hardware to get back then.

The revolutionary part was computers becoming powerful enough to perform image manipulation like that in realtime.

The latest Transformers film includes the towers in a panning shot of the city and it just kinda feels mesmerizing to see them in a modern film even if it's fake. Makes you appreciate when they appear in older films and TV!

I actually have this VHS, I found it at the bottom of some box in this retro store by where I lived. When I first watched it I was really high and thought I was hearing things. I had to rewind it and show it to friends to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. The rest of the VHS is actually pretty neat, nothing but CGI tech demos from the late 80's through early 90's. Want to know a crazy story? It was early 2001, and I was a high school freshman in history class, and we were talking about the early 20th century and how they started building the skyscrapers. My teacher noted one story where a plane had crashed into the Empire State Building and while everyone in class mused about it, I decided to blurt out, "Can you imagine if that happened today? Like if it happened to the World Trade Center or another building like that?" My teacher then brought up the bombings in 93 and the conversation eventually subsided. When 9/11 happened later that year, I recollected what I had said and hoped no one else remembered it. It was an odd and eerie coincidence. Maybe that's why everyone was so nice to me for the rest of my high school days. 🤷♂
