Another enjoyable watch Paul. It’s becoming a regular morning thing with my coffee. Always good to see Burnham and I do need to explore it more. Good seeing Louise as well. Great job. Best wishes. 👍🏻
Thank you Watto! Such a great feel good town and there is a good buzz about it. There is a lot to explore around the area and we didn't cover all of it that afternoon. Train was just £14 return from Cam and Dursley Station (free parking) and I got a through train from Highbridge direct to Cam on the way back so no M5 stress. Louise's video of it will probably be out on Sunday. I still want to go out to do the fort at Brean Down so I will be back. Take care both, Cheers, Paul
Hello Paul - greetings from Poland What a lovely video. It had everything - trains, classic cars, seaside, yatchts and boats, S&D history and Louise! A quintessential English seaside town brought to life by the coming of the railway in 1858. Tastes have changed and holidays abroad have reduced the holiday trade nowadays. Still, alovely town to visit. Gorgeous still photographs and wonderful camera work. Your commentary was great - I always learn something, new from you about a place that I have been to many times.
Thank you Michael - and thank you too for a really lovely comment. I can't find anything out about those narrow gauge rails by the marina - it was Louise who discovered them. I will keep trying! It is a super town - it is not run down like some other seaside resorts that I won't name. Although the long stayer holidaymakers have moved abroad, or further south to Devon and Cornwall, it still attracts a sizeable number of daytrippers, which was good to see! I would like to come back here again at high tide & sunset - I think that is when Burnham is at its absolute best. We both enjoyed our afternoon here. Hope the hospital tests go OK. Take care Michael. Best Wishes, Paul
Ah! I loved this video Paul! That was a superb last minute meet up in Burnham! This video has the real feel good feel that was awarded to us on the day. Really really enjoyed it! Thank you for mentioning my channel too 🤗 Louise
Thank you Louise and thank you for a great afternoon too - really lovely time. Sometimes spur of the moment things can work out really well, like it did here. Glad you enjoyed the video and I look forward to watching your video of Burnham. I tried to get it as a feel good video as I could. Glad that came across. Thanks again! Paul
Burnham on Sea looks like a very nice area to explore. The Classic Car show was a great find - always awesome happening across events like that, and yes, there is such an admirable dedication to restore old cars. Loved the black and white photos. So awesome to think about the legends of the area. Always enjoyable to see Louise, too! Have a great day, Paul.
Thank you Donna! Yes, it is a lovely area to explore. We didn't know about the classic car show until the evening before - it was lovely to stumble across it. It was a good and friendly atmosphere there too! Yes, we really enjoy doing meet ups when we are filming - we are planning another collab video to soon. Thanks for a lovely comment - hope you and Lyndon have a great weekend! Paul
What a super walk, with lovely old photos. The classic car show was interesting. The tiny pier at Burnham, as with many other piers, spends much of its time nowhere near the water.
Yes! That's true about the pier but when the water comes in, it comes in very fast! I do really like Burnham on Sea though - it has a friendly feel to it, which is often missing from other resorts. Take care, Paul
Hi Paul, lovely that Louise joined you today, what a lovely girl, I'll check out her channel. We visit Burnham mainly in the winter when it is quiet, thanks for a mid-term visit. Ron
Thank you Ron! Before I got there, I didn't realise it was quite so close to Highbridge Station - it is a nice stroll. Yes, Louise from South West Sundays is a great person - warm and genuine. I have known her since she started her channel two and a half years ago. She was really pleased that you subscribed and left a lovely comment. Like me, she covers the whole of the South West and I think our videos do have a similar feeling to them. We both try to be positive and uplifting in a world that sadly often isn't. Glad you enjoyed it too! Take care, Paul
The ones at Upton Upon Severn in Worcestershire (I know that's a river and not the sea) are rather lovely with toughened glass panels. It probably could be done better but I guess it comes down to £££ as usual Malcolm.
Thanks for that wonderful view of the town of Burnham on Sea. The classic cars made a welcome addition to the story. Some them I can remember. That shows my age! Yes. That was indeed a short pier! Alas, the old S&D., My one regret is never travelling on any part of it.
Thank you Lionel and Mary - it is one of my favourite resorts and it usually isn't crowded apart from sunny (!) Bank Holidays. Yes I never got to travel on the S&D either! I would have been about 1 or 2 years old when it closed. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Take care, Paul
I didn’t realise Highbridge was so near Burnham - on- Sea so a short walk to get there! What a shame it does look a bit run down but it is out of season there I suppose. What a tiny pier- as you say must be the shortest in the country! It was nice to see Louise there too. The car show was a welcome attraction- my favourite was the customised Vauxhall Cresta- nice colour combination! I bet that sea wall has proved to be invaluable with the weather we have had lately. Thanks Paul!
Thank you Diana! Yes, the two towns bump up next to each other - originally Highbridge was the bigger of the two when it was a market town, and Burnham was a little fishing village. It is a 40 minute walk overall, but there are regularly busses which take 10 minutes. However the walk (there are two routes, the railway track and the tidal river path, which you saw towards the end of the video) is rather pleasant and scenic. I thought the town centre was rather buoyant, and less affected by the cost of living crisis that I have seen in other seaside towns, which have a lot of boarded up shops. The seafront does look better when the tide is high and the sun is out, especially at sunset. It feels far more friendly and safer here than other places that I won't mention! Yes, the Vauxhall Cresta was both my and Louise's favourites too! Thanks so much for watching and stopping by. Take care, Paul
"Highbridge wharf, your hopes have died, They flow like driftwood down the tide, Out out into the open sea Oh sad forgotten S&D" (you will know this, from John Betjamen!). Very nice monochromes (as always) to go with this. And, by the way, on your suggestion my pal and I visited the Engine House at Highley last weekend. You're right, it is a fantastic location, made even more so since, unusually, it is free. Keep em coming Paul!
Thank you Richard! Yes, I remember that, and the BBC Documentary that Malcolm refers to in his comment as well. At least well still have the incredible photography of Ivo Peters to keep the S&D Dream alive. I do hope to walk another section of it soon for my Lost Railway Walks series. I am glad you managed to get to Highley Engine House in the gorgeous Severn Valley. I will be back there, I am sure, at some future point for another SVR video. After walking (nearly finished!) the whole of the River Severn from source to sea, I think I now have some of the River Severn in my blood! Take care, Paul
Hi Jesse, Yes it is about a 40 minute walk (lovely walk!) via the coastal river to the sea front from Highbridge to Burnham. Alternatively, there is bus that take 10 mins (every 30 mins) from Highbridge to Burnham town centre. Highbridge is just 10 mins from Weston on the train, and the station has a very good train service these days from Bristol and Taunton, and some go on further afield. I managed to get a through train back to Gloucestershire (Cam & Dursley Station) without changing at Bristol TM. Yes I didn't know about the car show until Louise told me the previous evening! Hope all is good with you. Take care, Paul
Was that the red one that passed the HGV cab near the end of the classic car sequence Michael? Good to hear from you! Hope all is well, Take care, Paul
Some very evocative B/W images of the river estuary at Burnham. Lots of beautiful sandy beaches, but the sea wall does look rather bleak, to me. Perhaps it was the light and the empty beaches. I vaguely remember a Betjeman/BBC documentary on the closure of the Highbridge line.
Thank you Malcolm! Glad you enjoyed the black & white images. I personally prefer Burnham on Sea to St. Ives in Cornwall, although I do like that too. Burnham is a lot less crowded, but much more friendlier. However, it does look better when the tide is high (it comes in frighteningly fast!), and the sun is out. The soft sandy beach is enormous! I know what you mean by the sea wall - however is it absolutely essential here - there was a Tsunami here in the early 1600s, which wiped out much of the village. Yes, there was a very good documentary about the S&D with John Betjeman in. I do hope to walk another section of the S&D in a future Lost Railway Walks episode video. Thanks for watching and stopping by. Take care, Paul
Loved this video Paul. Weve bern to Burnham a few times over the years but hadn't really explored it properly. The walk from the station to the seafront following the old railway was interesting with some of the relics from the past. My ftiend from work has a caravan at nearby Brean & was at the car show but i couldn't see him on your video. If id known there was a car show i would of gone myself as i enjoy the similar shows they have at Weston-super-Mare. The river estuary was interesting as we've never walked down by that bit. Will have to revisit i think. Cheers Paul. Some of those black & white shots were very good. 😊😊
Thank you Martin! Glad you liked some of my monochrome shots - some things are just better in black & white! The lighting when me and Louise were walking that section was really good - very dramatic. We got to the car show quite late in the day - around 3pm I think, and it closed at 4pm, so maybe he was there earlier. I was impressed with how they closed the main High St. - it worked very well and it was good to see such a great turnout with a lovely atmosphere. Me & Louise, while we are not car afficinados, both really enjoyed it. I do hope to go to Brean Down again to explore the fort - maybe catch the train again, and walk from there to Burnham and out along the huge beach! Thanks so much! Hope all is good with you. Take care, Paul
@@westcountrywanderings Hi Paul. We done the Brean Down walk a few weeks ago. It was the first time we had been there for years. I did film it but I'm still editing it. I got some old camcorder video of when we done the same walk in 1993. I will have to put a bit of it on RUclips. 😊😊
Hey Paul> A bit more info on the slipway as it is quite interesting. It wasn't about day trippers to and from south Wales it went further than that.Back than South Wales was an industrial power house with coal, iron and steel, and this in turn meant the area was well endowed with large number of rich industrialists many with business interests and connections in Europe. So the idea, and it makes perfect sense if you look at a map, was You travelled by boat to Burnham then by S&D to Bournemouth where a steamer would be waiting to take you across the channel to France. They took this so seriously that they owned the steamers on both crossings
Did you find out what the tracks were for . I know boats had to be hoisted out of the water at that point because as you saw the mud down to the river is very steep and unstable . I very often visit Steart Point across the river .A Lovely nature reserve worth visiting if you ever get the chance .
Yes! Steart Point is very much on my list of places that I want to visit. It is a tremendous nature reserve, I understand. I haven't found out what the tracks were for, but I think you are correct, in that they were used for hauling boats out. Thanks Shaun! Cheers, Paul

Yes, I agree - sea walls are a necessary eyesore. Can they design them to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing?
The ones at Upton Upon Severn in Worcestershire (I know that's a river and not the sea) are rather lovely with toughened glass panels. It probably could be done better but I guess it comes down to £££ as usual Malcolm.

Those classic cars brought back some memories having owned a few of the makes in the past.
Yes they certainly did. My first car was a Messerschmitt KR200 and we later owned one in the nineties, which sadly had to part with.
Glad they brought back memories for you.
Cheers Ted.

Until the tide goes out. then it becomes Burnham on mud.
It is still a lovely town. The mud is a natural feature.
