Alot of people are looking for this video on the internet-- I was one of them. If I could tip you I would; This instructional is specifically for the GLI, some models vary on the blinker being turned to the right or to the left position though! Do your homework!
I have a 2012 GTI, and I found this procedure in the owners manual. However, the procedure does not work for me at all. I noticed when your DRL's were on in this vid at the beginning. Is your GLI manual? I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but I just can't get it work. Mine's manual, halogen lights, have tried everything..
Failed to mention are the DRLs LED or Halogen? This might have something to do with activation as your's being in the 2012 GLI.... and other models.... I aslo notices weird things like the LEDS shut off when the Parking Brake is applied in the DSG and Manual... why? but not when headlights are on - they enter a RULE 17 state and the LEDs Dim... kind of strange. I have yet to test this on the GLI edition 30 We race SCCA. We are about to remove the LEDs so this is an interesting test. I will have to update. Oh and VW... on the edition 30.... please... you make this great car and you put LED's everywhere except the dome light and glove box. wow! What a Cost cut..... Almost an S4 inside..... Almost... love the RS steering wheel. Otherwise the interior is amazing!
@jasonCaresNot I've notices that your right(passanger) headlight looks like the bulb has burned out, I just got my 2012 R line and its the same! any idea why? but when I switch to high beam ... hello light
concludes that early models circa 2009-12 you can turn off, eventually legislation will make this more difficult,i understand Europe by 2025 virtually every car in use every day will have working drl's,and no doubt will be a test requirement.
Suspect most that have DRL function and fail to get it to work are not executing procedure correctly. If it's in your owners manual it should work. To turn off, 1. set headlight switch off 2. put left turn signal on 3. pull headlight flasher towards you and hold there 4. turn on ignition for 5 seconds, DRL's should turn off. 5. release flash lever and start vehicle. How long they stay off before automatically turning on again, I will investigate and update. Suspect you may have to do this procedure before every start if you want the DRL off.
rfn944 The manual fails to mention that the parking break has to be up for it to work.. or at least that's what worked for me. Guess they assume everyone uses it when they're in park.
I don't know for sure, but when using VCDS on other VW's trying to accomplish this, the door locks are supposed to be in the unlocked state. I have no clue if anyone has tried/made sure this while using the method from the video, but I figured to just mention it just in case anyone wanted to try since I do not have any of these models that this trick is supposed to work for.
