This guy is a forever legend. Underrated athlete for sure. He also did an amazing comeback after almost becoming paralyzed in a motorbike accident. He won gold in the world championships just a few years after. His mind and body is made out of material we didn't know existed. No wonder people called him "The Hermanaitor." Even Arnold salutes this guy. The Terminator is a cool movie, but it's fiction. The Herminator however is real life. Respect and greetings from Norway.
Underrated??? The guy totally dominated skiing. How is he underrated?
Herminator
The ultimate badass. I thought he would be carried straight to the hospital by helicopter. He must have skeleton from vanadium-reinforced titanium. Noone else would have walked from this.
I am from austria and gere he is defenitly not underrated. Almost everyone rates him above Marcel Hirscher and Stenmark as the goat
Da wo er herkummt unterschätz den nermd.
That shows why downhill takes more courage than any other sport. A crash like that can get in your head and ruin your career. Hats off to the Hermanator. He has balls of hardened steel.
D Redbud after watching a lethal practice crash, downhill skiing is terrifying.
Herminator
....won the gold medal in giant slalom and super G just a couple days later.........balls of gold you mean
The fact that we’re watching this decades later shows this was one of the greatest Olympic moments ever. Tommy Moseley’s ‘Dinner Roll’ run to gold was epic too.
Bad crash but mad air time.
...Also earned him a silver in the ski jump.
anononomous would have been gold with better landing
When?
@@fyrhunter_svkuhhm this was a joke...
I have seen better Telemark landings for sure...
only missed out because he didn't get enough "style points"
that comeback was unbelievable!!
I thought you meant that he crashed and immediately got back up and kept going...still amazing though!
That’s just impossible, at these levels, you lose 2 tenth of a second, you’re off the podium
HERMINATOR...one and only...greatest skier ever
I remember seeing this live and that particular turn on the downhill gave quite a few skiers problems. Obviously nothing like that. I remember it not registering right away that he was legit FLYING through the air uncontrollably. How close he came to a catastrophic injury. I couldn’t believe maybe 60 seconds later he flashed a thumbs up to the camera to let people know he was all right and got up under his own power, only indicating that his shoulder hurt. Man. Even if he hadn’t won gold a few days later, he certainly earned his nickname the Herminator. What a tough cookie. Wow
Was the first Canadian? Think one Canadian had this accident in 98 games
I remember that crash! Saw it live on TV and I thought "Holy F... H...! That's it! Hopefully he is not to badly injured!" And than he got up, rolled his shoulder and got down this "hill"! And he won a golden medaille in another disziplin 3 days later! He already was a legend bevor, but after this he was an unbreakable hero AND a living legend!!
Herminator forever!!!! 😎
Still one of my favourite olympic moments alongside bradburys shorttrack win in '02 and ledecka in '18
That footage isnt of the super g but the giant slalom. You clearly see it at 1.28 seconds. If id would have been the Super g, there would be Didier Cuche (CH) and Hans Knauss (AUT) in a tie for second place. Here you see the Giant Slalom Podium with Stephan Eberharter (AUT) and Michael von Grüningen (CH)
Yeah I was gonna say that sure looks like GS with those gate patterns
Kumat Mebro i was wondering the same. Because he didn’t tuck and it looked tight and technical
And there is no such thing as Super G "Final"
@@joedimaggio9444 There was 2 rounds before. Too many accidents in the second round so they stopped it at some point.
HERMINATOR
He was held to the ground better by that set of brass balls he got after walking away from that crash like a champ!
Thinking of The Herminator as we watch the 2022 Winter Olympics. What a champion he is!!
WOW , WHAT A steel man, how can he have come without any injury after that crash. And then win 3 days later. Incredible athlete
few years later he had a spectacular comeback after a bad motorbike accident. He is a legend.
Love Maier, he will always be in my top 3 favorite sportman
I remember alot of skiers falling on that day...this was scary incredible!
I remember seeing this fall and thinking, "OMG, they are going to take that guy away in a body bag." Then he got up and brushed himself off like it was no big deal. I couldn't believe it. At least, I thought this has got to cut into your resolve and make you a bit tentative in your next ski run. Ha! They didn't call him "The Herminator" for nothing. Three days later, he came pounding down the hill with absolutely no concern for his personal safety. He was like a human freight train. No hesitation, no fear, just absolute grit and determination. Darndest thing I've ever seen.
The legend himself.
I remember watching that on TV....it was terrifying!!
I love his office chairs.
Balls of steel. Gets up and shakes it off and then wins the Super-g a couple of days later. Amazing.
Awwww he was so happy :)
Absolutly amazing crash
Look like a movie
FANTASTIC, FANTASTIC, FANTASTIC, THANK YOUUU HERMANN MAIER.
Absolute Legend!
Insane guy 🥶🥶 in a positive way😍
Amazing!
That crash was brutal. Glad he was okay :)
surviving in full tack from that terrible crash must have given him an indestructible feeling, so he went full bore and won the gold in the super g final . amazing
Oh wow
Der Hermanitor 😂legend 💪🏽🖤
I remember another crash by anja pärsson in Vancouver, but she only took bronze the day after. I saw herminators crash. It was brutal.
amazing
this guy is a legend
, & to think, he almost "fell through the cracks" of his national sports program; that's even more unbelievable..
Wow...... wow......
BTW. He won 2xgold after that crash.
Che crazy!
That's not super g in the video , that's a giant slalom. Huge difference. But interesting enough, he won both in nagano
he came out of his tuck so late on that right hander. balls out.
Did the Swiss team really have cheese outfits omg the 90’s were amazing.
They had them in the 1994 Olympics, and used them for some years after that.
beast
Игры были в 98-м, а не 88м... Поправьте подпись
That Super-G looked more like giant slalom.
Herminator
He french-fried when he should've pizza'd.
Sufferin' sauerkraut, that smarts...
Guys listen to the instructor PIZZA.
Hi
Couldn't agree more.
Learn to use punctuation.
electricmaster23 better now
Fortnite IRL not really.
"Guys, listen to the instructor. Pizza!"
With a broken shoulder!!!!
Or the one time Bode Miller recovered somehow and skied forward with just one ski :D
Or check out Franz Klammer's DH winning run at '76 Olympics!
The best
Amazing. Too bad you added music. It would have been better with the original audio.
WHAT? No Gold medal for the Air Time & Gymnastics Flips & Crash Survival?
HERMANNATOR > there is ONLY 1 & will always be THE 1 !
当時何度もテレビで観ましたよ。いつ観ても怖いシーン。でもこの後金メダルを取ったっていうのは超人ですよ😆
Dude just opened a door to the Matrix
IN 2000 MAIER CRASHED AGAINST A CAR. SOON AFTER THE QUICK TRANSPORT IN THE HOSPITAL THE DOCTOR STATED THAT THE CAR SUFFERED SERIOUS INJURIES AND WAS RECOVERED FOR 40 DAYS...
:20 it was at this moment that he realized he fucked up.
I would drop my ski polls so I don't impale myself when crashing
music not necessary. we get it
And that's why they called him the Hermanator
Small crash
The closest thing to human powered flight yet.
How is that even possible
Mostly two factors: He was very athletic so the muscles took a good deal of that force and he landed outside of the tracks where the snow is less compact. The track itself is very hard and icy.
They change the track during training and race.
Herminator!
what ab athlete
Misleading title
....won the gold medal in giant slalom and super G just a couple days later.
The Hermannator
Iron Man !!!
Hermann is so far beyond todays skiers. Svindal was of the same kind. But all the others are tourists.
1:10 not to split hairs, but isn't that Giant Slalom, not Super-G?
Yes it is
When you see ur ex but then want to impress her.
lol)))
The reason he won was he didn't fall like he did earlier
1998 et non pas 1988
He was lucky that he crashed in snow. It cushioned his landing a lot
sccrdude22 not entirely..... World Cup race runs are water injected to they turn into sheer ice.. not 100% sure if they injected at that race but even then the snow is rock hard. Landing would not have come easy, it's similar to crashing into a wall, I kind of have an idea of what crashing at high speed is like as I myself have done it too. Still amazing that he walked away from that though.
Haha, injecting with water? that made me laugh...
Cliff De Zoete it's true, they do that to avoid the slope to get too soft.
Cliff De Zoete Spraying water on top of snow on below 0 degrees celcius = water droplet freezes then ice is formed. So they basically are skiing on ice.
Well, for the sake of being professional-istic is one reason for doing it, but ice helps skiing much faster, becuase of less friction compared to snow. But of course the chances of getting fucked up when things go wrong skyrockets as well.
3
it's just the music that makes it dramatic
What a wipeout! He must have been embarrassed.
Imagine Cristiano Ronaldo would fall like that
Not trying to be mean but he need some milk
Tidak seru! Karena gak mati ending nya. Hahaha
Jerryoftheday
It's looks really terrible, poor man but God saved him
Donnerlittchen!
The crash wasn’t as bad as Lindsey Vonn’s crash
First
Oof
Yeet
Austria is the best skiing nation of all time.
