I love how into the process Gavin is. He's not like "Oh build something that looks good and sounds ok.". He really cares, and it shows in his fantastic sound.
What a great product. Being able to design your perfect snare drum + accessories and then launch the lot as a commercial product is a brilliant position to be in, and well deserved.
wow...that is a well thought out product....feature rich with supreme attention to detail applied....true intersection of craftsmanship between Gavin and Sonor....bravo on the effort....bravissino!!!
The ability to so easily customize the same wires is brilliant. This snare sounds incredible, and sounds like it suits literally every style of music with the way he as is tuned already.
Jesus. I've never really favored one drum company over another, but the number of innovations and features in this single video alone has damn near made me a permanent fan of Sonor.
It's nutty that he tunes the larger drum to a higher pitch than the small drum is tuned pretty low. That's all part of the sound we associate with him, hes been using tiny snare drums tuned quite low for many years.
This is the first time I really am impressed about a modern snare drum. Props to Sonor for investing so much on r&d to make this product. I'm sure it must be amazing because Gavin is one of the most talented and clear-to-communicate musicians out there. Oh by the way, Sonor, second round of applause for having another awesome musician like Benny, that truly shows how commited you are to uncanny talent.
for about 5 years I've used the S-Hoop on all my snare drums because I play outdoors with occasional wind and the hoop does Indeed hold the "ring" in...the 2 different bearing edges are also something I've utilized for a while. These are good things and the combo of all of these features in one snare kit is really good....Bravo Gavin and Sonar.
This is the greatest work I've ever seen on a signature snare drum. 360° work on every aspect of being of stage, on versatility, on the sound. Well done!!
I think they used the Shure 57 for a reason - it's a really good reference that everyone knows, so I think the soundscape is pretty legit. Of course room and effects plays it's part, but other than that: Shit in, shit out, and this sounds pretty fucking good! xD
This is quite frankly the most well thought out piece of hardware/instrument I've ever seen. To have someone go to all the trouble to make something that makes perfect sense in every way on the first try. I haven't heard of that happening. Ever. You have every prop I can muster, and on top of that it's a brilliant sounding drum. :)
That drum key idea of having a finger tension knob on the top of the key is a very innovative, simple, cool and genius idea on the part of Sonor..You can't beat German engineering and ingenuity ..
Also one thing I like about SONOR. Their product presentation are so none commercial i a "common" sence. Thay focus on what is important and no "gabby-yabby" about what is flashy this or flashy that. Just straight up quality and seriousness about a product
You can really tell that if he's asked to design a signature snare he only thinks about what's actually useful and practical and not just a visual gimmick. This is a signature product that definitely reflects his specific taste and experience as a professional drummer.
That is certainly value for money on a snare drum. One thing is for sure. Gavin is such a perfectionist where sound is concerned i bet it sounds awesome. I'm going to have to get one.
if you listen carefully, you can here some differences. Especially when he puts the rings on the head. These differences are even more clear in studio recording.
would be nice to hear the drum with each differant snarewire fitted as i would like to know how each sound as you can buy just the snare wires on there own.
Now we're talking, Sonor ! Unlike Benny Greb's signature snare that has the standard throw-off and is about the same price, the protean has so many features, and that snare adjustability is just pure genius. It's a no brainer. Protean over BGs signature. On a side note, it just me, or does Gavin's voice tone sound like Sting ?😂
brilliant ... me being 7 years too late :-) I really like his sound, I just don't get the cymbal choice. Imagine this kit with a good set of Paiste cymbals
and how exactly would they do that? Anytime there's a mic involved it will alter the sound you're hearing and then you have to upload the file which will also alter the original sound. The only way to hear what anything actually sounds like is to hit it and hear it in person.
it's a bit sad, that everyone will now have Gavin's unique sound... I always liked how he makes such small snares sound so big... I've also tried cutting down the snare wires to like 10 wires or so and it works really well, at least on my 13x5 Starclassic Maple snare, it gives bigger body to the sound and also kills almost any buzz when playing toms... very clever idea, this buddy knows his drums
Has he always play 8 strand and birch snares? Like particularly on the sound of music recording? I have a birch 13x6 snare and wanna get the ghost notey and beautiful buzz rolls like his.
Oh yes, I personally like the Shure Beta57a for snaredrum. Ofcourse, this is a commercial so they'll try to make each drum sound awesome. These little things make a little susupicious, but both snares are probably awesome with whatever mic you use.
I mean the reason why the tuning keys are red, is so logical and obvious, but nevertheless I never have seen a red one, this is the first. That's what innovation is all about !
Gavin Harrison is my favourite drummer and this snare combines a lot of knowledge and great ideas. The only thing I don't like on theses Snares is the color. It looks like a snear which comes with a cheap starter drumset which are black in the most cases. Gavin says that this color will fit to every drumset - to my mind it completely ok if the snare design/color does not fit to the whole Set. A lot of drummers use different snares for different music or different songs and they dont care about
I love how into the process Gavin is. He's not like "Oh build something that looks good and sounds ok.". He really cares, and it shows in his fantastic sound.
What a great product.
Being able to design your perfect snare drum + accessories and then launch the lot as a commercial product is a brilliant position to be in, and well deserved.
i really like how you can change the snare wires easily. awesome feature.
Best snare strainer in business. Ludwig should take note.
I think Gavin might be my favorite drummer that I've ever heard. And I'm very into super heavy music. Death, black, etc.
He's very good - Bill Bruford said Gavin is his favorite young drummer.
wow...that is a well thought out product....feature rich with supreme attention to detail applied....true intersection of craftsmanship between Gavin and Sonor....bravo on the effort....bravissino!!!
Hard to believe looking at him, but I saw Gavin do a drum clinic about 40 years ago. So good to see he's still awesome!
The ability to so easily customize the same wires is brilliant. This snare sounds incredible, and sounds like it suits literally every style of music with the way he as is tuned already.
Im a guitar player, but i love listening to Gavin, his drumming and talking is so ellegant
Jesus. I've never really favored one drum company over another, but the number of innovations and features in this single video alone has damn near made me a permanent fan of Sonor.
I don't even care about the product. I just came here to watch him play
Lol I actually do care about his product however i will never be able to afford one so I too will jus watch him play.👍🏾
Gavin is incredible, and the features on this drum are very well thought out!
It's nutty that he tunes the larger drum to a higher pitch than the small drum is tuned pretty low.
That's all part of the sound we associate with him, hes been using tiny snare drums tuned quite low for many years.
A beautiful, well thought out snare drum from one of the best. Gavin and Sonor make a great team.
This is the first time I really am impressed about a modern snare drum. Props to Sonor for investing so much on r&d to make this product. I'm sure it must be amazing because Gavin is one of the most talented and clear-to-communicate musicians out there.
Oh by the way, Sonor, second round of applause for having another awesome musician like Benny, that truly shows how commited you are to uncanny talent.
german engineering doesn't stop at automobiles, my friends
Now I have to figure out where the snare leaks oil
for about 5 years I've used the S-Hoop on all my snare drums because I play outdoors with occasional wind and the hoop does Indeed hold the "ring" in...the 2 different bearing edges are also something I've utilized for a while. These are good things and the combo of all of these features in one snare kit is really good....Bravo Gavin and Sonar.
He's an awesome instructor and explainer. A real joy to watch and listen to him how delightedly he goes about what he came up with with Sonor.
Killer drums Gavin, Love your mentality, and methodology. Thanks for making this happen !!!
That is one nice sounding snare.... Always loved Sonor!
I do not play drums but I could listen to Gavin speak all day and learn or just nod along
This video made me buy that snare. And I don´t regret it.
This is the greatest work I've ever seen on a signature snare drum. 360° work on every aspect of being of stage, on versatility, on the sound. Well done!!
This snare sounds amazing, many options too
I love this guy playing! Master.
this has been out for 5 years, why am I just hearing about this?! this is everything you need to survive as a working musician!
Nice snare. Without Harrison's videos on how to make a good snare sound we'd all be lost.
awesome sounding snare i've ever heard , really .
Gavin your a genius, thanks for teaching a bassist about drums
He teaches drummers about drums too. The man is a brilliant musician.
best wood snare i ever heared !
but its not only the snare itself ... its also the room/mics and effects on it.
I think they used the Shure 57 for a reason - it's a really good reference that everyone knows, so I think the soundscape is pretty legit. Of course room and effects plays it's part, but other than that: Shit in, shit out, and this sounds pretty fucking good! xD
The best sounding drummer there is.
This snare sounds unbelievable... Another amazing job by Sonor.
This is the way I would have a snare if I could build one! This is now on the list!
This is quite frankly the most well thought out piece of hardware/instrument I've ever seen. To have someone go to all the trouble to make something that makes perfect sense in every way on the first try. I haven't heard of that happening. Ever. Thay focus on what is important and no "gabby-yabby" about what is flashy this or flashy that. Just straight up quality and seriousness about a product
Gavin’s drums sound amazing, someone need to record them and create a virtual library
You can really tell that if he's asked to design a signature snare he only thinks about what's actually useful and practical and not just a visual gimmick. This is a signature product that definitely reflects his specific taste and experience as a professional drummer.
Superb, and nicely thought out, congrats Gavin and Sonor.
Love these! And love Gavin Harrison! Hes always thinkin outside the box!!
Finally a proper Drum 🥁 tutorial video 📹! 👏🏻
Shit... This is what I need! Able to change 3 snare heads instead of lugging around extra snare drums.. Great idea Gav!
This is the sound I was looking for! Thanx sonor and master Harrison!
Awesome job Gavin & Sonor!! So glad to see such an amazing innovative snare, and it sounds fucking beautiful :)
I've just been amazed 8 times in one video.
A snare strainer from heaven :-) beautiful.
Not sure what combo he had in Detroit but his whole kit sounded AMAZING live!!!
i dont see how this would be worth it for a lot of people, but at the same time, it does seem very ideal .
oohhh very versatile snare drum!!! I love the gavin's drum set
THE Protean Tuning Key. Ooooooooh!!!!!
Amazing drummer,amazing sound!!!!AWSOME!!!!
Digging those classic, vintage looking lugs..
That is certainly value for money on a snare drum. One thing is for sure. Gavin is such a perfectionist where sound is concerned i bet it sounds awesome. I'm going to have to get one.
Awesome snare drum this Protean
Another burst of intelligence from Gavin!
that bronze four gap is beautiful!!
I'm not even a drummer, but man, isn't this guy phenomenal...
I love all Gavin's snares, but this one is most impressive!...oh yeah
if you listen carefully, you can here some differences. Especially when he puts the rings on the head. These differences are even more clear in studio recording.
Bit excessive but the keys are a great idea, always lose mine on the floor and I like the finger tight idea
Long commercial, but I liked it anyway.
Just great!
My God, so many good ideas.
Will be mine. Great snare!
hahaha the red things on the tuning key HAHAHA GENIUS!
Sonor customer for life.
Features!!! I love features!
This is awesome, Christmas is coming
would be nice to hear the drum with each differant snarewire fitted as i would like to know how each sound as you can buy just the snare wires on there own.
awesome ideas. very cool!
that is really impressive.
and awesome features too
This man is a genius.
Gavin is a genius.
awesome, and a fantastic price also

I own this snare and it is great.
sounds awesome!
That is fucking brilliant. You're a genius Gavin !! Well done Sonor... again !! ;-)
Very cool!
2:55 MIND BLOWN
Cool idea
This snare needs to come with a damn manual hahaha
Great stuff Gavin
brilliant ... me being 7 years too late :-) I really like his sound, I just don't get the cymbal choice. Imagine this kit with a good set of Paiste cymbals
I love this, I want one
Hello to me of snare drum past, you have the two now don’t you, 😀
and how exactly would they do that? Anytime there's a mic involved it will alter the sound you're hearing and then you have to upload the file which will also alter the original sound. The only way to hear what anything actually sounds like is to hit it and hear it in person.
Awesome product... Wonder how much.
it's a bit sad, that everyone will now have Gavin's unique sound... I always liked how he makes such small snares sound so big... YES!!! it is not a beautiful snare drum but it sounds awesome! PERIOD!
I mean the reason why the tuning keys are red, is so logical and obvious, but nevertheless I never have seen a red one, this is the first. That's what innovation is all about !
that snare sound
Awesome innovation Sonor! What mics were use for the snare?
I wanted to ask which sm57 microphone stand can be caught on mounts of this snare I tried some and it falls off?
Finally a signature snare with some thought behind it, and not just a name mindlessly slapped on it...
Might be, but to make it a representational test they might have used the same mic for both. I've tried sm57 on snaredrum, but not the i5 yet.

wow! nice! speechless! incredible! i hope is not that expensive thou please please please!
I WANT THIS SOO BAD!!!
Yes, please!
