Ambassador Coated on Bottom Emperor Coated on Batter Bottom to a medium high tone. Batter as loose as possible without getting wrinkles. Put a piece of fluffy cotton IN the floor tom. It will act as a noise gate. Little EQ, compression and gateing. The rest will be trying :D
@@audhen1 Good advice, but note that this only sounds good when mic'ed or sitting behind the kit. If you tune the tom this low and it's not mic'ed it will sound like cardboard to someone standing in front of the stage or even a few feet away. But generally that's how I tune my floor toms too!
Dude knows of what he speaks! I've gone through all my snares using this technique and they've never sounded better! Even one that's been finnicky from the go. Thanks Benny. Appreciate you!
The word "Nupsi" is usually used in normal language use when the speaker does not think of the right word for such an object. This term is usually associated with a funny, joyful, interesting, extraordinary or trivial little something. The use of the word is spreading more and more! In some parts of Germany the Nupsi is also written with b (Nubsi), in Berlin there is also talk of a "Nu-hu-psi", which is jokingly accompanied by a circling movement of the right index finger. -translated from JazzmanTV Community thanks for that, sir. made my day.
I never knew that trick about barely touching the top head while de-tensioning the strainer to maximize the snare sound and allowing the strainer and the bottom head to do their work. Thanks so much for the advice!
Benny, you're the greatest. Funny and unpretentious unlike a lot of drummers with your ability. Just bought your snare 2.0 and can't wait to try it out. I've been a gretch guy for a while but this snare is so versatile and I play so many genres I just couldn't resist.
Perfect tuning, Benny! I, personally, tune the bottom head a 5th above the batter head so that there is a perfect 5th interval between the two. Like a power chord! In music theory, it is said that a perfect 5th is the most harmonious and pleasing for the ear tuning interval.
Killer video! Great pragmatic method of tuning without overcomplicating this topic. It makes me want to tune my drums. It also made me order the snare (brass version that is) because the dampener design is super smart and makes for a super versatile snare. My compliments on not only being an outstanding drummer but maybe even more so a great educator. It’s not easy getting stuff like this across and this will stick with me. Now I cannot wait to receive the snare, start this video and repeat the process :-D!!
P.D. No aprietes mucho el entorchado, Don't be that guy!
Benny is as heartfelt and funny as his content is valuable. Thanks! PS: You can always press against the center of the drumhead ever so slightly to dampen the additional overtones to hear the fundamental pitch of each lug better as you check around the circumference.
Very helpful, especially since I just received my Sonor Jungle kit for Christmas this year, and have been learning to tune each of the drums. This is the best snare drum tuning video I have watched, thanks for this Benny!
I like the comment "this is not rocket science..." hahahaha I'am working in an isotope lab for the last 30 years ... i just need that ... merci merci Benny back to life .... to do drums again ...
"It doesn't need to be complicated..." - (uses 47 different tools to turn the lugs...). Thanks, truthfully, for the video, Benny. I'm eagerly awaiting my BG Sig Beech snare on backorder...
Thanks for making this video Benny! There are so many people on RUclips that make videos on drum tuning but this video (and all of your others) have taught me the most. You make it simple and easy to apply to my own drum kit. Now I have a rock solid process that works every time! Thanks Benny for all you do
Please Benny, can you do another tuning video in a studio? I love your concept and how you talk to the camera. The only "problem " is the sound and echo of the room. Thank you for everyting you do for the drumming community. I've been a fan since 2005.
Great stuff Benny, love the crispness, tone and array of versatility...and its a 13 to boot. Just not in the tax bracket for a freshy...will keep an eye out for open-box, scratch-n-dent/used, but certainly look forward to finding one.
I wonder who hit the thumbs down on this video..its a great video ..very helpful for those that need simple breakdown ... Must be jealous hitting the dislike button... Top notch great video..as always Benny...keep up the Excellant videos man !!🎵🎵✔👍
Mechanically even tension like this is nice assuming all your tuning rods are equally "slick", i.e. they don't present different levels of resistance. Some snare rods (or lugs), no matter how you lube them, will feel tighter to tune even if the tension applied on the head is the same. Not all of us have brand new Benny Greb Signature snares :) And I do the same starting point by simply getting the tuning rods as tight as I can with just my fingers. My snare has enough room just under the hoop where I can grab the top threads of the tuning rod and really get them somewhat tight there already. No need for a key that has that thingy on top. Messy though.
Exactly. There's no way to guarantee the friction between each tuning rod and its lug is equal to all the others, especially if the drum is old and perhaps in need of a little maintenance. That said, Benny's snare sounds incredible here, room acoustics aside. It makes me want to get a 13" or 12" snare. I get the tuning rods to just touching, then tension the lugs the same amount by sight (half turn, or whatever is needed to get a tone when I tap the head near the lugs). Then I fine-tune the lugs to sound the same. That's what I use as a starting point.
There is a company called Mashoff drums. He has a video called "Best Tuning Trick" or something simlar. He does a similar thing to dropping the two lugs closest to you.
Nice to see this video a day after tuning all three snares I have :D But it's ok, I messed up only one of them :D And not with the tuning, but with wrong choosing of the drum head. Just wanted to try someting else, but these drum heads with dot in the center are not for me, similar sound effect to too tight wires, no dynamics at all.
With a Drum Dial, you know the drum head is evenly tensioned, and the pitches do match. Also, you can easily and accurately recreate successful tuning formulas. It’s a must-have.
Can I toss my coin into it? Quick tip, if you don't have a mallet you can always use your pedal beater if it's with felt of course) either by itself or just tape it to the drum sick. Her you go ;)
The pretightening is fine but normally it isnt a bad idea to apply the asymetrical tightening method because every tightening is changing the position of the rim.. but who am i right? But he easily compensates for that mistake by giving you the 2 screw trick on top.
For electronic drummers: 1) press 'Tuning' button 2) turn dial clockwise or counterclockwise until desired pitch is reached. In all seriousness, I watch stuff like this because sometimes I'm a bit jealous of people who can afford to play acoustic drums. As much as I like my Roland kit, the tonal options, easy recording, metronome/coach features, (sort of) quiet playing, blahblahblah, I still miss the tactility of an acoustic kit.

buy his "the art and science of groove" - dvd, there is a bonus-part of tuning :)

Why the fuck keanu reeves?!
@@dikbeats2720 He's got a reputation as being really nice.
no, der ist viel zu selbstbewusst. Für deutsche Verhältnisse auf einer möglichen 10/10 in Sachen Salesmanship, almost cocaini..
I love you Benny ! Bought your DVD. I will buy your damn Benny Greb signature snares !!!!!
Benny, this is the best snare tuning video I've seen, and I've seen a ton, being a beginner drummer.
