- This presentation, by Dr. Joshua Miller, will review evidence that can B vitamins (i.e., folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin B6) slow or prevent aged related cognitive decline.
Dr. Joshua Miller is Professor and Chair of the Department of Nutritional Sciences in the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. His research focuses on the influences of B vitamins and related metabolites on cognitive function and risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in older adults.

There's a huge difference between synthetic folic acid & natural folate & taking the former as a supplement can cause serious problems for up to sixty percent of people. If supplementing it's better to do so with methylfolate or Folinic Acid (not the same as folic acid) which are bioavailable. This means they can be used by the cells immediately without having to be converted by a cell enzyme which may not be present in sufficient amounts due to the mthfr polymorphism that many people have.
Excellent and important discussion
The presentation was likely given to a non-scientific audience and probably also quite some yeas ago (2017?), nevertheless i is highly relevant. I was amazed to see that the beginning of the knowledge about homocysteine and neurological disorders appeared so early.
Yet, it is kind of disappointing that nothing was mentioned about the mechanism homocysteine is doing damage. Guesses are that it is through the damage of the endothelium through causing oxidative stress. In this vein, it would have been very interesting to see results that cross hCys with HDL, glutathione, beta-carotenes, lutein and vit C.
Much stronger effect when combined with omega 3 acc. to a recent Cambridge study.
the MTHFR gene mutation makes the Homocysteine levels worser as it affects the body's processing of Folic acid &.B12
I always had a strong positive response to B vitamin supplementation. After COVID I couldn't tell I was getting a boost. Then I came across methylated B vitamins where I got a strong response to my functional ability. I wonder if there has been much evaluation of ability to methylate B vitamins annd cognitive decline and if this ability can change over time.
Methylated b-vitamins are likely to cross the blood brain barrier much better.
20:50 losing 3% of brain mass per year doesn't mean you lose 30% in 10 years, it's shocking that he'd make such a mistake. 0,97^10 is 0,737 (so 26,3%). And sure you could argue it isn't much of a difference (in this case, mind you) but it is a huge difference in how people interpret how these things are calculated from his words.
doesn't really add credibility ...
In the gran scheme of things, this really doesn’t matter. The point is to explain to people about the rapid brain mass loss… the exact value only matters to scientists.
@@campersruincod6134 But what if I'm 20 and watch this and take this seriously, then believe I'd have no brain left if I'm 54 years old (while it's actually 0,97^34 which's still 36% brain mass)? It's not as insignificant as you make it out to be with your reply. 0% and 36% isn't something that "doesn't matter".
The Meta study asked a trick question. OLD PEOPLE ARE NOT expected to improve. Old people want to preserve what they have.
seems high cholesterol is not so related to heart disease, mor ethe pity for the Big Pharma, such great profits and side effects...
Not a logical conclusion from this
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Worst presentation ever. These yellow text boxes covering up the figures are just atrocious.
