A huge and diverse subfamily of dogs, the bone-crushers patrolled North America for more than thirty million years, before they disappeared in the not-too-distant past. So what happened to the biggest dogs that ever lived?

Lol
NUUUUU rip big doggos....
They can't crack them, so they're sending them back to the dogs that could.
they're canidae, therefore they're dog
To soon.
Actually, they're closer related to wolfs, foxes, and other modern day doggos than to bears, otters, seals, etc. Where's your logic here? They were even in the same family, and might have had a similar bone structure.
From crushing bones to barking at doors. How the mighty have fallen.
It's the same with humans. We used to hunt prey by chasing them for miles in small groups.
Now we just sit and watch TV stuffing twinkies and beer into our pieholes.
@@actsrv9 but if the need comes we can create havoc with all the nukes and guns we have...much more than our ancestors

Cats barely did anything to their extinction. It was a mix of catastrophies like change of climate, competition with other bone chrushers, Canines (yes, the dogs we have today is one of the reasons they are dead) and more! Canines evolved to use stamina than brute power or bulk. If you think about it, their extinction is like Megalodon's, change of climate, new species, and competition. Stop thinking cats are the reason they are extinct because cats barely did anything.
This was inspired by Some body.

If memory serves the oldest extant dog breeds genetically can be traced back to Siberia note however that dogs were not domesticated just once but several times same with other animals such as cats and camels of the top of my head. Yes. Perfect match because it started with a rivalry. Packs of dogs and packs of humans hunting same species of prey with similar strategy. At some point they realized it would benefit both if they hunted together instead. ;)

I am especially appreciative of the writers of this series willingness to say that something is an unknown or a theory. One of the greatest mistakes I encounter is when experts present something that is thought to have occurred as a hard fact. This is a vital difference between evolutionary theory and theology. Scientific theory is a fact that incorporates guesses. Theologists posit that scientific theory is ALL theory, i.e. NOT fact, and that theology presents as fact. This, in my view, is the difference between education and dogma.

Why do so many of the pictures make them look like various domestic breeds of dogs?
Joshua Hillerup yeah one looks a lot like a pit bull or mastiff
Because artists are often not scientists.
Artistic liberty. Not scientific art.
1) It's paleo art. If your a paleo artist, it's kinda your job to know what they animal looks like. And they aren't just your usual painter.
2) Scientist is a very broad term. It's everything from studying insects, to studying space.
Another thing to consider is that with their hunting style and powerful jaws, they probably did have shorter, broader snouts and heads, making them more akin visually to mastiff breeds than wolves.
I love paleontology because we can see an entire evolutionary arms race spread out over millions of years. It’s brilliant!

*Me:* L O N G D O G
I laughed way to hard and long at this
Love this channel!!😀 it's so informative and entertaining and interesting.
Possible future topics:
How photosynthesis evolved.
Gorgonopdids and other animals of the time.
Ophabina, anomalocaris, and other such early blizzard creatures
Kaprosuchus and other crocodilomorphs like armadillosuchus
(You guys are way better at coming up with topics though so just keep doing what your doing, because it's awesome 😀👍)
There NEEDS to be an episode on the crocodilomorphs!
+The Creature Wow. I'm surprised I actually can't find anything on how cyanobacteria evolved, or what their immediate ancestor was. PBS Eons does need to do a video on the evolution of photosynthesis, as you have said.
Wasnt there already a video on the gorgonopsids?
Oh! Photosynthesis Is a GREAT idea!
They already did one on evolution of photosynthesis
It's right here

I blame everything on the cats!😂😂😂😂😂😂
"The rise and fall of the bone-crushing dogs"
Hyenas: meow
hyenas are actually more close relatived to cats
Sorry to nit-pick, but that painting of epicyon with its floppy ears is terrible. Floppy ears are useless for an animal trying to survive in the wild. Floppy ears are one of the traits linked with domestication; see Dmitry Belyayev and his famous domestic fox study.
And domestication seems to have made them stupendously successful, bending us to their will with their floppy ears.
It makes it look like a giant pit bull.
neotony
That's the thing about people. They tend to be unable to imagine certain things so they just resort to what is already familiar. In this case, since the artist didn't have all the information, inspiration was taken from modern dogs.
True but if you are going to present a rigorous time line for the emergence of species you should like wise be rigorous in any representation of those species you present I would say.
It's pretty well known that floppy ears are a hallmark of domesticated animals ...not just dogs in fact, it is further not a trait that would be selective in an environment where humans don't exist and the efficiency of hearing is reduced due to ear flop (yes...it is). So it doesn't make sense in any direction as a trait to be shown in renditions of a canine species that lived millions of years before homonins separated from the LCA with chimps.
I don't care what you say dogs and cats ore at the top of the food chain they get humans to do their bidding without question
FLAMING RAINBØWS not all
Uchenna RUclips factual
They so cute,, I don't mind it.
@@sunnishae5047 me neither i love cats
I think there is a difference between a social chain to a food chain.
Now make a video of those ancient cats pls. How they evolved and spread throughout the world, how many of their species went extinct and how many other animal species they managed to "eliminate". :P
Excellent video! I actually learned something.
I always heartily enjoy watching Eons, but I’ll sing praises to my cat who caught a Nola rat. Every pup I’ve had were only good at hunting down belly rubs.
Cats are the better hunters than dogs. It’s no competition.
They protecc
They attacc
But most importantly,
They eat bones for a snacc
Edit: thanks for all the likes!
That rhymes.
Foalan sounds so familiar
Dogs still do that...
ICONIC
YES
Where did you get the maps from. I like them and they seem to explain more about the landscape than I've seen before.
The title of this video sounds like a prog metal album.
