Hello David, I just joined your channel. I am an older german Hobby-magician (72 years old) and I like your magicreviews very much. They inspire me so much. Thank you for your videos !
Love packet tricks! One of my all time favorites is L'imprimerie ('Printing') by Dominique Duvivier which I think Presto Pronto was based on. It's a very fun version of this type of trick and worth picking up or looking into! 😁
Ah, probably my top 2 fav sub genre of magic, it is how a young kid gets to amaze friends for very little money. I was so happy to see Color Monte, I thought with its age, it might not be here but to your point, an absolute classic with many re-makes still produced today. Growing up it was Emerson West, Ron Frost and Meir Yedid. Some of my old favs were Sympathetic Cards, Wildcard and one I cant recall similar to Presto Printo where the magician was using a card counterfeiting machine that was producing odd cards and the final card turned over said Out of Order. As always, thanks!
@@magicorthodoxy have you seen color monte hacked by Brent Braun and the magic firm? I suggest having a look, it is a rework of the original effect. I watched the demo at least 30 times before i decided i had to have it and it's worth every cent.
I have a favorite packet trick called "The [New] Limited Edition" by Gordon Bean and Larry Jennings. While many websites have already revealed the basic principle, using physical cards in front of the participants adds to the mystery and can still deceive those who believe they know how it's done.
I can’t BELIEVE nothing by John Guastaferro (spelling?) was on this list. Out of the Blue is by far one of the most amazing tricks I’ve EVER seen, and not just as far as packet tricks. It may be my favorite thing I’ve seen with cards. Eight cards, no gaffs, and pure miracles and mayhem. It’s more than worth the practice. Love your videos!
"Turn" by Peter Pellikaan makes my Top Packet Tricks list. I performed it at a restaurant for waitstaff, and on a subsequent visit, my brother asked one of the waitresses if she wanted to see me do another trick. She said, "I'm not sure... That thing he did with the changing cards freaked me out...I haven't recovered."
Favourite ungimmicked packet trick: Aces Up from Stephen Hobbs' Technical Toolbox => Very clear and visual effect. The red aces always travel back to the top. Favourite gimmicked packet trick: Spin Doctor from John Bannon's High Caliber => Twisting, vanish, transpo, color changing backs. And the gimmick is the climax so you end kinda clean. John Bannon is a genius!
My favorite packet trick is "Factory Misprints" by JC Wagner. I also have come up with a version of an "All Backs" style trick that flows right into "Ambitious 12345" from Larry Jennings but I only use Ace-4
B'Wave is one of my all-time favorites. It's a classic and a standard. And I have other more esoteric "packet" tricks in my EDC (e.g. "Will to Read", "Ophiuchus") but one of my other favorites is "Volition" by Joel Dickison. It's really great because it's organic looking (since you make the cards up yourself) super simple to do, and gets amazing reactions!
Hi David allways enjoy your reviews and love above choices. My favourite packet tricks at present, sometimes I fool myself doing them. THE VAMPIRE and CHAMELEON BACKS
Way back, (some 50 years ago!), when I first learned Wild Card I was always nervous about someone grabbing the cards at the end. The I figured out if I stack the "changed" cards correctly as I placed them down I could finish with a flustration count. Once the audience had seen the "fronts and backs" of every card there was no longer the need to pick them up to look at them, so people completely stopped reaching for the cards!
You may want to check out Walk on the Wild Side by Dan Harlan since you actually have the spectator hold some of the cards and then put them away at the end.
1. Roy Waltons: Rainbow Cascade. It’s the ultimate packet trick. You show Four Cards, they then turn FD & FU numerous times throughout the effect. One jumping from your pocket & back to the pack. When you turn the cards over, they all have psychedelic coloured back/faces. True magic.
Another excellent review David and fortunately I perform with several you mentioned AND Twisted Sister is my first choice. YES, please do the top 10 Monte List next. Thank you. Ed
"Twisting the Aces" by Dai Vernon and "The Last Trick of Dr. Jacob Daley" by Jacob Daley should be on any top ten packet tricks list, in my opinion. Vernon's routine arguably kick-started the packet trick craze that peaked in the 1970s/80s (thanks also to Alex Elsmley, of course). Here are three classics that I haven't seen mentioned in the comments: "Call of the Wild" by John Bannon, "Bikers" by Gordon Bean, and "Cardboard Chameleons" by Daryl. The latter is difficult but an absolute knockout! Another great video, David. Thanks!
David, I posted my faves as a part of someone else's reply somewhere down in the comments but it's my favorite personal list. I also wanted to add What, Where, When, and Why wallet by Adam Wilbur......very commercial. And and oldie but a mind frier in 'Bring me the head of a packet trick' by Mark Elsdon👍
Fantastic video, David! I have most of these and perform B'Wave the most (What a killer!). Three packet tricks I also love are Capitulating Queens and Paul Gordon's The Corner of Piccadilly and The Ultimate Sting (very unusual "stinger" at the end). Thanks for putting out such great reviews!!!
Yes, "Capitulating Queens" is a GREAT TRICK! I bought several packets from Gary Plants, but it is no longer available from him. I think the packet trick is also in Jim Swain's book "DON'T BLINK." You can see Gary perform the trick right here on RUclips!
Jerry Somerdin’s “You Must Have Been Drinking 2” is one of the best effects I’ve ever seen. If you can find it, buy it. It is truly an amazing effect with huge reactions.
I have ordered three of the top four at your recommendation. My little pocket carry favorite has been the Parade of Kings (or Queens.) Thanks for reminding me about needing a wallet for some cards!
Really great show! I’ve been performing a Trost effect David regal remarketed Trostworthy. It is ridiculously easy and yet no one figures it out. All you need is eight blank cards or eight jokers and two matching cards.
Some amazing choices. Love B'Wave, Double Back and NFW. Definitely Not Marked by Brent Braun is up there for me. Ace by Sanders. And Corner of Picadilly by Paul Gordon - gotta be the best monte out there, especially with the beautiful new card stock.
David, great review! I also love King of Hearts which is a gospel monte trick. Keep up the great work. Been subbed for a long time now. Hopefully you'll get the 3400 extra subs soon!
Royal Scam by John Bannon is one of my favourites. Also Rainbow Cascade which is Terri Rogers version of Roy Walton’s Cascade - with a fantastic colour ending. Lastly a little know trick by the name of Guessing Game - unfortunately I mislaid the instructions years ago and can’t credit the creator. Daryl’s Presto Printo was based on Dominique Duvivier’s Printing but using an easier handling. I bought Printing from Daryl with his routine before Presto Printo was released. I never liked the last card changing to green, fortunately after many years of looking for an alternative I found the ‘fingers’ card in Joshua Jay’s Prism Deck which works brilliantly.
I have tried NFW. A couple of things for me that were a problem. The thing that makes it work wears out or becomes less, effective so it does not work after a while. In addition, after you perform it, I have found the first thing a spectator wants to do is examine all four cards. That is why my vote for top packet trick goes to B'Wave. Just another opinion. Cheers!
@@magicorthodoxy I have never had anyone ask to examine my B'Wave cards. A couple of reasons I suspect. No cards are changing from one to another like in NFW so less suspect gimmicks. Also, the way I perform B'Wave, I do not hand out the cards. Sometimes when Magic is too impossible, like in NFW, then people suspect trickery. Just my point of view. Cheers!
Thank you for this list...as for my choice: What happened to the granddaddy of them all? That would be Vernon's Twisting the Aces (I had to double check the title of this vid to make sure I was not speaking out of line, as I thought maybe, it was titled "Which is the Best Gimmicked Packet Trick". I have been doing Twisting the Aces for over 25 years. Thanks again David.
I vote for Peter Kane's Gypsy Curse and Daryl's Cardboard Chameleons. Gypsy Curse cannot be handled by the the spectators, but Cardboard Chameleons can. Gypsy Curse is really amazing and ingenious; I never see it done today - except by me.
Great list, added many of these to cart at Penguin. Waiting for my NFW to arrive. My number one, though, is ACE by Richard Sanders. Mind blowing jokers to aces and ends (for the most part) clean.
Love the list. However, vaulting over all of these is Three (or simply '3') by Steve Valentine. The most wonderful, stunning packet trick I've ever watched or performed. Only NFW comes close for amazed reactions from specs. Cheers!
NFW went straight into my junk drawer, as the DST gimmick was never 100% reliable. For me, Skinner's Ultimate Monte is # 1 and is a real worker. Stand Up Monte is also very good & has a lot magic happening in it.
I can see Skinner's Ultimate monte being #1. I own a couple of copies of it, but I don't actually perform gambling routines, including monte ones. GREAT routine though! Skinner was a real master of the craft.
Great list David👍......Here's a long list of my favorites..... Chop Shop by John Bannon ( from Fractalicious), Bring me the head of a packet trick by Mark Elsdon, A walk on the wild side by Dan Harlan, Homage to Homing by John Guastaferro, Presto Pronto by the great Daryl, ACE by Richard Sanders, Blind Faith by Stephen Tucker, 69 by Dan &Dave, I change by Peter Nardi, Trance twist by Peter Pellikan, (well, everything by Peter Pellikan 💯) Heritage by Daniel Madison.... although not quite a true packet trick.
Great top 10. So tough to pick but for 30 yrs, i’ve said Capitulating Queens by jim swain is the best of all time and I stand by that. Cheap Labour by david acer from his first book Natural Selections is my all time hidden gem. A souped up version of Sander’s awesome stickman. Check em out.
@@magicorthodoxy David, it’s so good. Get yourself one and review it. Everytime I demoed one in the magic shop, I sold it. Great, great trick. Easy to do and has a unique kicker that gets excellent responses from the audience.
Thanks. I knew I had scored when first seeing Stickmen 4 on a Richard Sanders Show DVD in a joblot of old unboxed magic DVDs on ebay that nobody else bid on. It annoys me as I only have one disc and I would like the set but it's hard to find especially in good boxed condition at a reasonable price. I'm going to be one of the last people still buying magic DVDs on ebay! PS in your video at 3:45 you show RS DVD discs 1-3 but it's on disc 4.
I have a few of these tricks, and I have just two comments. Garrett Thomas is a genius, and I love the Stand Up Monte. But it's too hard for me! (At least yet). B'wave pronounced as you (and the late Max Maven) suggest makes me think either of ... somebody who can't tell the difference between R and W (like "bunny wabbit") trying to say "Brave", or an imitation of the sound of someone throwing up. So I think I'll stick to "bewave".
If I have a red queen in one pocket and a black in the other, I can have the spectator choose the color AND then pull it out of my pocket rather than FORCE the color
@@magicorthodoxy Could you please make a video about Kids’ Magic which are suitable for performing for Kids? Classic Props? Classic Tricks? Must-buy Items? Any Chance?
Color Monte is hands down the best packet trick of all time. My poor old mother destroyed mine trying to figure out how I did it. Best 3 bucks I ever lost LOL/
I prefer packet tricks that can integrate into my destruction deck...pick a packet...pick another pack...then TNR...and reason to move deck out of play. ;) New set piece in flow.
Have you done a top ten magic gimmicks? Or card gimmicks? Or coin gimmicks? I’m obsessed with gimmicks. Would love to see an all around gimmicks list. Gimmicks.
Let me be more clear (my miscommunication). What mentalist EDC that you would place in a wallet? Your top 10. I know you like "will to read". Paul Canarsio ( mis-spelled) perhaps Fraud.
youd have one with QUEENS and ONE with KINGS in your pocket. Ask for any card - pick picture cards or number cards? ok, Jacks, Queens or Kings - and then boom .... (equivoque obviously)
I used to do ACE by richard Sanders, but I'm not a fan of packed tricks that use things like DST or R/S... so I have switched to maxi twisto by nick trost!
@@magicorthodoxy well, easily influenced by daryl can be perform either by a deck card or packet tricks. however my opinion to perform as a deck tricks seem to be more 'stronger" effect because the spectator can "freely" select a cards.
This is a pretty good list but it's unfortunate that Bwave and twisted sisters are both on a top 10 list and no twisting the aces effects are mentioned at all... the original twisting the aces, perhaps waving the aces by Guy Hollingsworth, or even Twist by Mathieu Bich could easily outperform twisted sisters (which max Maven even said took a great trick and made it a good trick).

Hi Mac !!!
My favorite packet trick is "Dorset" by Woody Aragon. And it is with only 8 normal cards
i'll have to check that one out
1. Corner of Piccadilly. 2. Montinator 5.0 ( B'Wave I carry quite often.)
nice list
Honourable mention for Paul Gordon’s Killer OMG. Love how visual it is.
AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is where I got mine www.penguinmagic.com/p/15792
Hey! So what is your favorite packet trick wallet holder? THANKS :)
I don't carry mine in a holder, just my wallet
two sets of B'wave makes a bigger show? Could you please elaborate a little?
If I have a red queen in one pocket and a black in the other, I can have the spectator choose the color AND then pull it out of my pocket rather than FORCE the color
@@magicorthodoxy Cool idea. Thanks for sharing it.

Best 3 bucks I ever lost LOL/
she destroyed your props?
@@magicorthodoxyShe sure did and I laughed until I was blinded by my own tears
She has been gone for over 30 years now and I still get ticled when I think about her. Good memories of better times.
Shocked you didn't have ACE by Sanders versus NFW. I know it came out long ago but ACE is NFW on steriods.
good to know
I like doodle queens, ace ( richard sanders ), and sizzle ( john bannon )
COOL !!!
I personally love Dazed by Peter Duffie.
Gimmicks.
coin gimmicks? A shell, a flipper, a magnetic coin and a copper silver set ... DONE
B’Wave. Period. End of discussion.
LOL - mentioned it
great list David 👍🏻👍🏻 NFW is new and improved by 🐧 Rick Lax & Nick L … called “No Joke” … tutorials are good
YES !!!
What are the best wallet mentalist tricks?
wallet? ...you mean like a peek wallet?
Let me be more clear (my miscommunication). What mentalist EDC that you would place in a wallet? Your top 10. I know you like "will to read". Paul Canarsio ( mis-spelled) perhaps Fraud.
I wonder how can two sets of bwave be a bigger effect… anybody knows where i can get ideas?
youd have one with QUEENS and ONE with KINGS in your pocket. Ask for any card - pick picture cards or number cards? ok, Jacks, Queens or Kings - and then boom .... (equivoque obviously)
what are the card backs seen at 7:16?
I bet it's just some random b'wave effect - not an actual deck
I used to do ACE by richard Sanders, but I'm not a fan of packed tricks that use things like DST or R/S... so I have switched to maxi twisto by nick trost!
oh nice
Nice 👍🏻
Thanks for the visit
Easily influenced by Daryl considered a packet tricks?
what do you think?
@@magicorthodoxy well, easily influenced by daryl can be perform either by a deck card or packet tricks. however my opinion to perform as a deck tricks seem to be more 'stronger" effect because the spectator can "freely" select a cards.
What accordion wallet would you recommend?
this is the one in the thumbnail (reviewed in the members section) www.penguinmagic.com/p/15792
I hear ya, but some of these tricks are BASED off a twisting the aces routine though
@@magicorthodoxy Which ones because I'm not aware
