This was great David, it's so easy to forget about some of these the deeper we get into magic, especially with all the 'latest and greatest' that everyone instantly wants. When you go back and look at some of the projects produced to go along with these decks there is some stuff out there that could really go into a working set. Too many people write these off as they have seen them from the very beginning of their magic journey but believe it or not, spectators will still be just as surprised with one as these as they would if you do it using decades of sleight practice 👌🏼
As a magician coming up on 10 years of performing, I don't go anywhere without my cohorts of marked cards! If you know, you know, and yes I know they're not objectively the best option, but they've never failed me!
Cohorts are my go to as well. Great marked deck. I’ve recently became a big fan of the Pete Turner cross keys deck, & the new Pioneers deck from Ellusionist. Both easy to read @ distance IMO.
@@kodasheamuncie I really like the Crossed Keys Deck as well. I bought around 25 decks from Penguin. Need to start using them again-- great cards and great marking system.
I usually have a Marked Stripper deck in my bag. Very versatile. And it takes just a couple of "cuts" to reset all the orientations (after you get the feel for it).
Thanks for the list. I have a number of these decks, but since I don't normally use them, I tend to forget how each is structured, so this was a nice reminder about that. I had come across the Pop-Eyed Popper but don't have one; maybe it should go on a wishlist. One trick deck I have that wasn't mentioned here is a Mene Tekel deck; I can't say if it's better than the others or not, but I have a book that included tricks for it, and I bought it for that reason.
I won't ask about the codes, I'll research it later, but I will ask this: how can I improve my tricks, in general, not just card tricks. I am always concerned about the angle even if I never actually messed up a trick because of it. And I have one more question. Using gimmicks, marked or special stuff when doing magic tricks makes me less "magical"? What I mean is I know that some magicians don't need gimmicks, they manage just fine with what they have around them. P.S. thanks for everything you teach us!!!
Many thanks David. Really good idea to make a video to summarise the best decks. Gives food for thought and also a good reminder to go back to the forgotten magic drawers! 🙂
David. I just want to say that I love your channel. You are the first reviewer I go to when I hear about a new trick, and you are very often the source where I discover new tricks. Probably 40% of the tricks in my collection are because of your reviews. So from one "non performing, enthusiast magician" to another, thank you!
When performing card tricks I always use a regular deck and let my hands do the magic BUT if I was going to carry another deck which does one trick, it would be Richard Sanders - Any Card. I personally think it's better than the invisible deck.
@@thestreet9537 If you have seen Any Card performed correctly you will know why it is better. With the invisible deck, people will think you are a skilled magician who can manipulate 1 card.
@@scruffy12561I agree 100%, more powerful and easier to do than Invisible deck. The fact that no one ever expects things to be written down on the back, has people go bonkers.
A one way forcing deck, is often the easiest way to fool magicians, especially if they know you are good with cards. They are expecting something devious, and will almost always miss the easiest most straight forward method LOL
I tried a mirage deck on my younger daughter and she noticed the R+S as she drew the card. Of course, she and I have been learning tricks together so she handles cards more than most, but it was my first attempt with something other than an invisible deck with the similar concept. Should I keep R+S out of spectators' hands completely?
one i love using is the 52-to-1 deck! also i don't feel like its a terrible thing if the spectator messes up the orientation of your tapered deck since it's designed to be easy to fix, unless you mean that you lose the setup you already had but i wouldn't hand it out if you cared about the way the cards are oriented.
Lots of these are more utility that have multiple routines, which makes them so great, however have you made a top 10 or even 20 of the best single routine trick decks. I.e. Quantum Deck, blizzard, 52 to 1, etc...I know penguin did one similar. Just curious to your opinion.
Great review. When I used to work for Magic Masters many years ago, we had a package deal we sold a ton of. It contained the wizard, svengali, invisible and a rising card deck. Great decks.
Enjoyed the list. Lots of fun remembering some that I haven't used in a while. I would however, have included the MENE TEKEL deck to your list. Thanks for the channel!
Terrific, terrific, terrific review! I have not heard of the #9, #10 decks and I will be looking to purchase these also. Love the spectacular mind blowing routines I am able to magically perform with my magic trick decks. Thank you David!
Great list of classics! I'd add: Mind-Power Deck by John Kennedy 52-1 deck by Wayne Fox Cheek-to-cheek deck Paul Curry's 'Touch' deck is also great (if it counts?)
Great list and loving "The Code" and in the spirit of caring and sharing my favourite Trick Deck is "The Borrowed Deck". Start your performance of ledgermain by subtly convincing your audience that you have 'borrowed' this deck and are 'going to try something';. Think about it. Try it. Cults have been founded on less.
I've heard of most of those. Though some I didn't know what they did. Thanks. Have you ever reviewed or heard of the "Charge-it" card trick? I used to have it. I got it 25-30 years ago. Thanks to Bobo's book those coins are quite useful. That would make for a great viewer question. What are the top coin tricks? I know you're not a coin guy, though.
Timecard (discontinued) by Gordon Bean is a favourite of mine to perform. I've also been performing the ID for over 50 years & it is also a solid piece of card magic.
Ive probably got more mileage out of my svengali deck. It's just so versatile. And card to anywhere still blows minds with this deck. @@magicorthodoxy True true unless there were pictures that represented the order of chaos as it were. But also the talking head is why we show up! The reviews are bonus!!
When I first started with card magic I bought a few stripper decks that allowed me to do amazing things with basically no skill. Now after years of performing with regular decks and improving on my sleights, I just ordered 15 marked stripper decks from Penguin. So devious to ring that in to a performance.
Sven, obv. That said, it makes no sense to list all the available trick decks and be all coy about other magic products/methods used to implement some of these decks. You do know they sell that stuff in exactly the same shops, right? OK, I'd probably put the Marked deck higher, but I'd put the Sven above the Invisible Deck.
A few complaints: 1) I could see the invisible deck, so obviously, you got a dud there; 2) was that really the mirage deck or was it my mind playing tricks on me...; 3) a stripper deck? really? Kids watch this channel... And dagnabbit! I can't help it: L&S=Laverne & Shirley and R&S=Reconnaissance & Surveillance There it is. Really sorry, but I couldn't help it. Feel free to delete my post. ...Sniff... (Really, I love the channel and everything you do! Thanks for this excellent overview! Note to self: I have to stop drinking so much coffee...)
Great list! I love my stripper deck. It improves so many tricks. I created a very clean cannibal kings routine with one and it is hard for me to go back to doing it any other way. Whenever I think about simplifying tricks so that I can focus on presentation, I reach for my stripper deck.
....I love your reviews brother. I really do. I really like that you want to maintain the secrets and don't want anyone talking about or revealing the secrets....I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything....but I feel like you may have unintentionally revealed the entire secret/gaff to the stripper deck. By saying how they are made, what they do and what they accomplish...lol. either way. Keep these reviews coming! I'm loving it.
As someone who’s relatively new to magic, I had to really think about the two codes here. Great video as always! You’ve listed a few decks here that I hadn’t heard of, and definitely given me some new things to look out for! Love how simple and fooling a marked deck is, and the Svengali deck is probably my favourite deck on here, with the Invisible Deck a close second. Not overly fond of the mirage deck yet but I’m sure that’s just because I haven’t figured out how to utilise it properly instead of just pulling out the Svengali or Invisible decks.
@@magicorthodoxy Yes. It’s a “card and any number” with a blank deck with lots of story possibilities. There’s five hours of training that come with it.
L and S means Little and Sad. It means there is a little tribe of people inside the deck who are sad due to lockdowns stopping magic shows for so long. They want people to be happy again so they repaint card faces in unexpected ways to make spectators smile. Your smiles and applause give the little tribe a job and make them happy. R and S is the same effect but there isn't a tribe, just Ren and Stimpy. Occasionally Powdered Toast Man makes an appearance and you get to ride his bum cheeks. Beware, the deck does occasionally have some crass humour. C'mon man, the muggles have a right to know the truth 🤣
i cant remember where this came from but here's a fun idea: 1.take an invisible deck and get it all oriented so it looks the same as a normal deck. 2. Get a force card from a normal deck and reverse it somewhere near the middle of your invisible deck 3. Have your spectator place the deck behind their back and turn over any card into the middle 4. They return the deck and you spread it to reveal their force card

A few complaints: 1) I could see the invisible deck, so obviously, you got a dud there; 2) was that really the mirage deck or was it my mind playing tricks on me...; 3) a stripper deck? really? Kids watch this channel...
And dagnabbit! I can't help it: L&S=Laverne & Shirley and R&S=Reconnaissance & Surveillance
There it is. Really sorry, but I couldn't help it. Feel free to delete my post. ...Sniff...
(Really, I love the channel and everything you do! Thanks for this excellent overview! Note to self: I have to stop drinking so much coffee...)
HILARIOUS
Please do a review for Marvelous Multiplying Box by Matthew Wright ..
i'd love to
There knockout deck I always thought was pretty great
:D
Mene tekel is a good one.
Yes it is
Great list! I love my stripper deck. It improves so many tricks. I created a very clean cannibal kings routine with one and it is hard for me to go back to doing it any other way. Whenever I think about simplifying tricks so that I can focus on presentation, I reach for my stripper deck.
:D
How about the 50-50 deck.
great suggestion
Come on everyone know they stand for lasagna and spaghetti / rocky road and strawberry. Yes magic is powered by food. Surprise!
:D
Get Sharky!
😀
Good Stuff.
Thanks!
I’ve know about the invisible deck way before blaine.
:D
Why do you explain tapered and not R&S or L&S?!?
i'm a goof
Siegfried & Roy ? ;-)
52 to 1 deck!
:D
In my opinion as a magician one of the best trick decks is the stripper deck
we agree
How about the Mene Tekel deck!
great deck
Cool
😀
Split deck.
good one
I like the stripper decks that are also marked
YES !!!
Pssst…David’s not really going to check the comments, so L and S= Limp and Stiff, while R and S= Round and Square. Now you can sound knowledgeable!
OH NO !!!! MY CODE, IT'S BROKEN
....I love your reviews brother. I'm loving it.
maybe, but I doubt it's that closely guarded as a secret, google "stripper deck" and see what comes up - LOL
:D
Craig’s Quantum deck.
oh really? It has multiple uses? I have not seen it yet
@@magicorthodoxy Yes. It’s a “card and any number” with a blank deck with lots of story possibilities. There’s five hours of training that come with it.
I know R and S but not L and S Damn it. 😬
you probably do
:D
:(
Ain’t nothin stopping my show and trust they’ve tried for years!
Smilesotheylikeyou
i cant remember where this came from but here's a fun idea:
1.take an invisible deck and get it all oriented so it looks the same as a normal deck.
2. Get a force card from a normal deck and reverse it somewhere near the middle of your invisible deck
3. Have your spectator place the deck behind their back and turn over any card into the middle
4. They return the deck and you spread it to reveal their force card
Nice !!!
I'm absolutely surprised that you didn't include a 52 shades deck. With that deck you can perform mind bowling effects in just a walk around
that's a great one to
You can do a lot with just one short card! No one will see or find this.
