      @@dalehildebrandt1045I genuinely believe the internet has made humans less kind as a result of making a habit of saying snarky teenage rudeness that would never have become common place if you had to be in front of others when you said it. It’s fun when people laugh with you but it can sour rapidly when you go after the wrong subject with such a rude attitude. If you want people to love you and care for you being cruel for fun isn’t going to end well ultimately.

      @@dorjedriftwood2731 Being cruel? Like, by scamming people with talk about healing and protection from all sickness and disease and selling them a Kahuna Disc? With advertisments that look like they pretty much violate every law about medical advertising in the USA? Look, this Speedmaster obviously wasn't murdered because of all his skills, right? Which only leaves accidental death or disease. All of which should be prevented by his psychic shields and placebo discs. It's not snarky teeange rudeness to call out scammers, and to point out their own scams didn't work and failed themselves miserably. Ofcourse, attacking my character is much easier than evaluating your faith in a person who sold you snake oil. And where's any scientific testing? It's almost as if scammers today have a much easier time with the internet instead of being subjected to real life testing by real scientists with real life credentials.

    Thanks for covering the late John Latourette! Now you understand why he was recommended.
    To be fair, he did do at least one thing correctly: he helped my mother shed her fear of heights via hypnotherapy. However, one correct instance doesn't make up for a (CENSORED) ton of bullshido.
    Answer to your question: I do believe that someone can become a better martial artist, despite their teacher- as long as they learn legitimate skills and employ them correctly.
    Keep the bullshido at bay and keep the martial arts legit, bro!

      I just got to the end and your question. Yes, I think you can surpass your instructor in skills and morals. One of my first jiu jitsu instructors was a 5th degree and told made up war stories, let people down in every way you can think of personally, and got deep into drugs for a while until he had a heart attack. I'm nothing like him but his tricks and philosophy on defense made me who I am today (on the mats anyway).

  • @RealKoman
    @RealKoman 8 месяцев назад +6

    Before I took up martial arts, I used to be a dancer for a very long time. The first dance school I was in had a cult-like mentality all the way, with the founding family being it's leaders. Most of the things they ever taught were complete BS as well. It's not like in martial arts, in which you can actively get beaten up for trying to use your "knowledge" but still they made us develop some very bad habits and profitted off of young students following their questionable leads and never questioning their judgement.
    Based on that experience I can say that roughly 10% of people from that particular dance school had turned around and started accumulating real knowledge from more experienced and truthful sources. Only maybe half of these still represented the school after realizing they have been lied to all along. I myself ran away as soon as I found an opportunity to go to another dance school in my area (there weren't many where I lived at the time).
    So to answer the question: Is it possible to start practicing a legit martial art/sport/etc after years of being subjected to a fraudulent teacher? Yes. It definitely is. Is it easy to make the turn in life necessary to do so? Nope. It's hard as hell.

    My first instructor is considered a wacko by many in the same style/country I live in, and some of it's for good reason. He knew some stuff, he thought he knew other things, and he got really into chi and into the idea that traditional moves are better for fighting on the streets than modern ones, which just isn't true. Anyway, after falling out with him, I trained under several other teachers, attended a crapton of seminars and did everything I could think of to fill in the gaps, and my students are now doing pretty good. They did decently well at their last two tournaments, and we've improved and are still improving for the next ones. A thing I noticed after switching federations is that, everywhere you go there are a ton of instructors who think they're "masters" of their craft and only a handful who actually are (at least in terms of teaching, which is where my focus lies). Thanks for the video! R.I.P. Tourretes guy.

      Sometimes later in age we also come back and see things differently, Cho wasn’t what we thought, longevity and body wellness for life become more valuable, and competitive / tournament styles are one fun branch but there are many branches to the martial tree. Stay humble and be willing to make amends unless there is outright abuse or falsehood

    • @danidsds
      @danidsds 8 месяцев назад

      @@WindRider707 Hmm, I see your point. There is definite value in practicing martial arts for physical and mental health. I do so myself, never been much of a competition guy. Practicing kata in a park should be just as common practice as running.
      However, I do strive to understand and become better at preparing students for competitions because many of them want to participate.
      As for the past, unfortunately, amends are no longer possible. And as for the abuse/falsehood... Well, aside from making 13 year old kids teach classes in shady counties where not even an adult would feel safe, and coercing a 15 year old kid to make a public facebook apology for daring to go to another club for a training session the thing I remember most is the time when I was about to leave and my lovely instructor literally said that I must have a black soul like all the other instructors/students who were leaving. So, I guess I'm going to hell now:))
      Oh, and let's not even get into the lies/falsehoods cause, holy poop, there were many..

  • @brdr6012

    I absolutely believe someone can have a bad teacher but be a good martial artist.
    The founder of Isshin Ryu had a questionable list of teachers, he established his fighting style after he dreamed a goddess told him to, and he learned about half of kobudo before incorporating it into his system late in life Yet there are plenty of good Isshin Ryu practitioners out there who spar regularly, show ferocity in tournaments, and passionately defend their teacher as having good techniques at the end of the day.
    I will say that Isshin Ryu *works* though, since it has a deeply practical side. Someone learning from a dillman or an ashida kim would have to work much harder to be a good martial artist - but it is possible.

His old stuff was full of useful information and he was truly adept in his concepts, kicking, speed fighting, etc. Sadly in the later years of his life his mind started to go and he suffered from many delusions not to mention he could no longer physically demonstrate his "speed" concepts, (how to hit a man 11 times in less than one second), he got sloppy as he got older. OK...Rob has got a couple of things confused, but that's easy to do with LaTourrette...who is a conman. First Jack "Tower", is actually Jack LaTourette, the son of the speed master. He learned from dear old daddy to create a fake name....you see Jack "Williams " IS the fake name the speed master has used for more than 30 years. He uses "Williams" as his spokesman, salesman, supporter, firewall.
    Now, at one point LaTourette was a serious martial artist. But at some point he realized big money could be earned by peddling bullshit. Let's face it, it's tough to earn big money running a little dojo in Oregon. But putting ads in every major martial arts magazine and selling tapes and books, that can bring in some big money.
    I bought several videos from him in the early 90's, l spoke to Jack "Williams" several times on the phone...and he sounded exactly like the speed master! I asked him about this and he said he mirrored the "Dr" in every way and actually began to speak like him, both in tone and cadence. Lol...yeah right, l didn't fall for that.
    His death is no great loss, and proof that his energy bullshit was just that...bullshit!

      I met La Tourette a number of times throughout my life, and had several conversations with him... I always felt like I needed to go home and wash my soul, after speaking to him. I swear a lot when I talk, and I dont mind a crass joke, but he would say and do things with the soul purpose of provoking someone to the point of rage, if he could.
      I ran into him once at a Blockbuster Video store. I was holding a Jeff Speakman video in my hand, reading the back of it. I went to an exhibition that Speakman did in honor of Ed Parker, and it was quite impressive. I was telling that to my then Wife, and this little 10 year old kid gabs the video out of my hand, squares off with me, and states "you think Spearman's impressive, because you're either a moron, or give never met a REAL Martial Artist" ... Catching me off guard, and looking around for his parents, I said in a kind but firm tone, as I could tell he was only a child, with very poor manners "and do you have someone in mind who you think is more skilled?" ... With out hesitation, he says "I sure fucking do, asshole... My dad could beat Jeff's ass, and yours at the same time" ... The very next moment, La Tourette steps up behind me and says "I'm fucking John La Tourette, and that's my kid you're talking to there, his name is Jack, and I've trained him to call out bullshit, when he hears it, it see it" ,
      I turned to him, and reached out to shake his hand, and he just dead started me down, like be was daring me to be the slightest bit disrespectful. I had met him briefly, one other time, at a restaurant, one of my instructions introduced me to him, but had never had any kind of real interaction with him, up until that point. He invited to his school, and said if I "wanted to truly learn something in life, and about figuring, I'd pay him a visit" there...
      The next week I went down there, because I wanted to see how deep the rabbit hole went, and how dirty it was (id heard stories about him for years prior to officially meeting him that night). With in 10 minutes of me walking through the door, he told me that he remembered meeting my wife at a marketing convention a few years prior, and went on to tell me how "nice her ass still looked, so she must be still keeping in shape, I know she used to be a driver and a runner... See, I don't forget anything" ... That was my first of 3 conversations I would end up having La Tourette.
      My dad was a Medford Police Officer for many years, and helped start the first SWAT team in Southern Oregon. La Tourette used to train many of the Medford Officers, and my dad warned me that his tactics in both business, and interacting with people, were questionable at best, but that time, along with a couple of other times I ran into him over the years, made me quite certain that he would never be someone I would want to learn anything from, no matter how skilled he was... And make no mistake, he was indeed a very skilled fighter, and had a legit 5th degree in Taekwondo that he earned in Korea, during his time stationed there, several years prior to meeting David Day, who introduced him to American Kenpo.

    Ramsey Dewey made a good point when he was looking at Tai Chi and other "less effective" martial arts, that if you already have a good grasp on fighting then you can pull really useful stuff from unlikely sources so you can have a legit black belt from an unlegit sources. Having said that, don't know how you could spend enough time around this guy to get a black belt unless you're delusional or reasonably consistently high.

    I was previously informed that Ed Parker had trained him, and I had viewed his striking videos showcasing his utilization of the American Kempo hand technique, similar to both Parker and Speakman. His videos were fascinating to watch as it appeared he made contact with his opponents, and the sound of his hands striking them was audible. However, I was unaware of his recent claims of possessing psychic abilities or boarding a crazy train.

    I had ALL of LaTourette’s “speed hitting” “speed fighting” etc. (in my defense,I was an insecure young teenager answering ads from the back of black belt magazine!!!).
    There are kernels of decent-to-ok stuff in his kenpo curriculum, but it’s almost all bullshit.
    His PhD is bullshit, and his NLP and Huna stuff is bullshit too.
    I don’t know about cloud busting, but it seems like something he’d have a video on.
    I think if someone trained with a crazy person who also had a solid martial arts base, and they focused on that and decided they weren’t interested in the crazy, then they could end up alright.
    EDIT: a-fucking-mazing, his disc …he got even bullshitier! 😮 🤦‍♂️

    To answer your question, It is possible to train under someone who is crazy and end up being legit but not likely. I actually knew John in the early 1980’s and know the man who took over his Ed Parker’s Kenpo dojo in Boise. He was, at one point totally legit and and was indeed known as Dr. Speed. He wrote a pretty good book back then titled Mental Training of a Warrior that was a staple at the time about visualization. He started showing signs of instability before he left Boise and is known to have acted pretty erratically. It’s sad he will be remembered for what he became later in life rather than his early career.

    This answer is a bit different from what you asked, but I'm convinced that there is value to train under the very best instructors of whatever martial art you decide upon, including ones that are suspect. That way, if there is something to be learned from the art, you've learned it from the best source possible, and if there is nothing of value to learn, you've studied it with the only people who would be qualified to provide you with that experience. To circle back to your original question, if the art has nothing of value to teach, then the student who studies it will have nothing to learn and cannot come away better for the experience except being more knowledgeable about the art's flaws.

    I have trained with crazy people but had to break away. You can get value from crazy people as long as you sift through the garbage to find the treasure. This is not easy but it can be done with hard work.
    So yes you can learn things from crazy people but it is near impossible to represent them sanely as a black belt or teacher. You will need to break away and reorganize.

    To answer the question of the video, yes assuming you have been able to leave the bad organisation and find a legitimate gym/dojo to train at. But then the question becomes, is that bad instructor your instructor or is the new gym/dojo instructor your instructor instead?

    I had a chief instructor for a bit who was a complete whack job and kind of a creep. He was a pretty decent businessman tho, and had the good sense to recruit talented black belts from other local schools - they ended up teaching the advanced classes and creepy McWhackjob would mostly do promotions, membership management, and hitting on the single moms when they came to pick their kids up.

    To answer the question of the day, it seems like people almost never turn out good after training under a psycho for extended periods of time however sometimes you see people with experience train with a bullshito master for a short period of time and it seems to have no negative effects like Alex Pereira with Steven Segal

    I tend to agree with you. Even if someone was well meaning to not perpetuate the nonsense they were taught it’ll inevitably come through in some form or fashion. Also the sunk cost fallacy will most likely take over. It’s easier to perpetuate nonsense than accept that you wasted time with make believe martial arts.

    It was (I'm guessing) his son messaging you, most likely. La Tourette himself, died a year ago (from what I've heard).
    La Tourette was a legit badass. The dangerous kind. He was horribly cruel and abusive toward the majority of his students... But he truly was a very skilled and powerful force to be reckoned with, when it came to fighting.
    He personally trained Josh Haynes (Ultimate Fighter winner, and UFC fighter, who's currently a Deputy Sheriff in Las Vegas, Nevada)

    18 black belts. Even Chuck Norris only has 7 black belts and that includes a few honorary ones and one he gave himself (and also very legit ones in Tang Soo Do, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Judo). And he's been studying martial arts nonstop since the Korean War.

    • @SupremeGreatGrandmaster
      @SupremeGreatGrandmaster 4 месяца назад

      Since the Vietnam War. Chuck was stationed in Korea during the Vietnam Conflict while his brother, Wieland, was sent to Vietnam where he was killed. Chuck Norris was born in 1940. It's unlikely that he would be fighting in Korea from age 10 to 13.
      Your points about the multiple belts are well-taken, however. 👍
