  • Sonic Origins is yet another re-release of the classic Sonic games, but it also tries really hard to feel like more than that. How well does it succeed?

    One of the biggest missed opportunities for this release imo is not making Amy playable. It almost feels like false advertising with how much she's featured in the cutscenes and official art and pretty much every piece of media surrounding the game...except the actual game itself. Their poor wording of "new playable characters" as one of the features when they really basically just meant "& Knuckles" didn't help either.

    • @iggyminious
      @iggyminious  2 года назад +16

      Definitely agreed. I thought about this while I was editing the ending and saw the shot of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy together.

    • @jomaq9233
      @jomaq9233 2 года назад +9

      Almost as if Amy might have actually been initially planned to be added but was cut surprisingly late into development (definitely not confirmed at all, but would not be surprised if this was the case)

      @@jomaq9233 i was thinking the same, and even worse, sega decided to cut amy off to add her as a DLC (even the smallest way to milk more money, they would do it, for sure)

      To be frank and before people got their hopes up about it, i think it'll be more than appropriate to have Knuckles playable in CD, but not Amy, she's still on the NPC side. Besides, I find that having Piko Piko Hammer adds up nothing to the profile as she don't have it originally.

    Sonic 1 Forever, Sonic 2 Absolute, Sonic CD Restored and Sonic 3 AIR are still the definitive way to play these games and add SO MUCH added features and optional tweaks to make them almost addicting to play, not to mention mod support! They even implement a MUCH more Mania-accurate Drop Dash and remove the roll/spindash lock that Origins decided to keep in for whatever reason. CD Restored even has Knuckles and Amy as playable characters, and the fact that you can even install these versions on a Modded Switch or potato PC, they absolutely put Sonic Origins to shame.

    • @iggyminious
      @iggyminious  2 года назад +2

      I still haven't touched Sonic CD Restored, but I highly agree with everything else. The only reason I didn't readily recommend them in the video is that they're a potential hassle to get working for some; I remember it being a bit of a pain to get the APK files for Sonic 1 and 2 off my phone to decompile them, and the digital versions of CD and 3&K aren't readily available any more (thanks, Sega🙄). That's not even factoring in the procedures you'd have to go through to play them on console, if that's your preference. If you're able to get past those barriers, though, then Origins doesn't have much of a leg to stand on.

    My problem with this collection just really is the pricing. I don't feel that what this collection has to offer is worth the price they are asking (especially for me, being a Brazillian having to pay over 100 Reais) even though this is the best versions of theses games.
    Also, I am really sick of Segas business practices, so I will vote with my wallet, and won't buy this game.

      it's worth $20 tops...I'd consider $30 if they fixed a lot of the issues and went out of their way to get proper licensing or did a remix of ice cap and carnival night. But they didn't...because they didn't care and it shows :/
      If they added metal and amy as ACTUAL new playable characters (cuz tails and knuckles are not "new") then I'd consider the full $40 or even have them sold separately as a $10 DLC. But that's it...charging anymore for "island cameras" and shit like c'mon that's pathetically low SEGA

    fun fact: the reason why sonic 3 has the only good drop-dash is (probably) because the drop-dash was originally planned to be sonic's ability in sonic 3, but was replaced with the drop dash, and can be accessed by messing with the files of the sonic 3 prototype.

    Only Super Sonic theme in S3K was remixed by Jun Senuoe.

    Origins at best should cost 3.5 dollars. Not 40.
    4 dollars with the inclusion of MJ's tracks.
    Let me remind you origins consists of 3.5 prehistoric 2d games that were at best ok.
    The soundtrack is compressed, it still looks like they were just ripped from their corresponding consoles and just added widescreen.
    Most important of all: it's just another re-release. These are not new games.
    Tomb raider-Core's legacy, despite being 3D and not being that outdated, and despite it having three of my favorite games, I would still spend only five dollars for it. One game - one dollar. And no, I am not counting chronicles as a new game.
    Also, I would buy it on Gog due to it being a DRM-free store.
    Origins on the other hand... Not only did SEGA include devuno, the only available versions have DRM. Meaning if you bought it, you wasted your money, as you only bought the access to play it... Same access which can be revoked at any given time.
    The only game ever I would spend a lot of money on, just to pay for the access to play it is left 4 dead.

    "Remastered visuals" a lie...legit looks the exact same as previous ports
    "New playable characters" also a lie because tails or knuckles don't count and they didn't even put knuckles in CD
    "Additional music tracks" aka we replaced ice cap and carnival night zone with some shitty half assed prototype instead of one of the better prototypes we had (Also mislabeled shit)
    "Bonus mission mode" The missions take less than 3m each and are pretty much just defeat x amount of this enemy, collect x amount of rings, etc :/
    "Letterbox BGs" wow PNGs!! So cool!
    This collection feels like a big hunk of garbage SEGA wanted by x date because they needed money NOW and didn't care about quality...everything about this SCREAMS money grabbing corporate greed. Like $40+? Really SEGA?? AND THEY DELISTED THE ORIGINAL TITLES LMAO!!!

    Even though origins is decent, that even with direct fan development involved they didn't make it as good as it should be & make the engine's development team unhappy, looking at how poorly they do nowadays, they should just hire fan-developer & let them take over for a few years & sega should just see what makes it so succesful, even though i love origins, i can't just ignore the flaws & this is still my oppinion
