Such very nice work here. It just truly illustrates what great starter scopes the XT series Orion Dobsonians are. Not just good starter scope but good scopes period. I have the XT8 and I love it. If some one is trying to decide between the XT6 and XT8 it is safe to say that you can't go wrong. The XT6 is as good or better at planetary viewing depending on seeing conditions. XT8 will have the edge with deep sky objects. XT6 has the edge in portability which is more important than many realize.
The main difference between the recorded image and what you actually view, is the lack of color, what you actually view will be in black and white. On a cold clear night, with a quality eyepiece.you should be able to make out some good detail on Jupiter and Saturn.
I did not use any kind of tracking for these pictures,i just recorded video as Jupiter drifted through the eyepiece. It does take alot of trial and error to get everything lined up properly, but if you have got the time and the patience you can get some pretty impressive results without having to spend alot of money.I think the XT6 is all most people would need, take the money you save and buy some eyepieces!
Considering buying the 6" or 8." To that end, I have a burning question: When you gaze through the eyepiece, is what your eyes see (regarding Jupiter and Saturn of course) something similar to what you have photographed in the video?
I do not think you would be disappointed with an XT6.I would highly recommend the Explore Scientific 4.7 mm eyepiece,or the TMB Planetary 5mm eyepiece for viewing planets.
Hello, I have an Orion xt6i telescope and I cannot seem to get an images to resolve/come into focus when I use the prime focus technique as well as a lens projection kit. How did you get your images to resolve? I have read a lot on the internet so far that implies that my type of telescope will never really work for taking pictures by attaching my camera without moving my mirror...something I am unwilling to do. Any guidance you can offer is appreciated! Great shots of Jupiter! LOVE!
Been thinking of buying a telescope forever and for my bday next month I think I'm finally going to do it. I've been flip flopping between the Orion xt6 classic, starblast 6 and spaceprobe 130st. The st is a bit cheaper but this may have convinced me to spend the extra $50.
Have you ever thought of building an equatorial platform drive or 'hiss' drive for your XT6? I have an XT6, and I'm interested in building a drive for tracking (although I see what you've been able to do without tracking devices). Very nice, BTW.
Great images..!! I've got xt6 for myself recently. Also bought a 5mm X Cel celestron. Is it a TMB type eyepiece? Can u let me what is a TMB planetary eyepiece?
Btw did you constantly have to track jupiter to get such an amazing picture like this . I have heard its hard to track objects in dobsonians . is it so?
Please I need advice, should I buy the Orion 10014 SkyQuest XT6 telescope or Meade etx80 at-tc I am a beginner and I can see a significant difference between the quality of the one and the other, well you might say that the Meade is mostly for beginners and it is of lower price but if the quality is so different I'm willing to pay 200 more bucks in order to by the Orion if it is worth it...does anyone have any advice?? Or suggestion for other telescopes??
Thanks snowpuppy!
these Orion XT scopes are a great value! They give some very impressive views,Jupiter and Saturn look pretty amazing!

Thank you for comments!
And I was thinking of buying xt10 as my first thinking that xt8 won't be enough...but this video of xt6 totally blew my mind!
I am not using a barlow, just a 5mm eyepiece, plus the zoom of my point and shoot camera

hello, i can't decide whether to get the celestron astromaster 130eq as a first telescope or this one. which one would you recommend?

I use an Orion SteadyPix Deluxe attached to the eyepiece

did you use a barlow or is the magnification on that scope that good?
How did you mount the point and shoot camera to get the pictures?

I used a Sony DSC-WX5 , to record HD video , and then stack with Registax 5.1
What kind of camera did you use to take these pictures?
Jupiter looks pretty big though the eyepiece, not as large as a dime, maybe half as big.But it is big enough to make out alot of detail

SKYquest 6 go for it
You can see the moons aswell
how big would you say jupiter looks through that eyepiece? size of a dime, smaller or what? without any zooms...
