Thank you Liz. This is a really organised approach for initial stages that I really want to tap into more to make my practice more intentional. Much appreciated!
Hi Giovanna I’m so glad it was helpful. I find with colour especially, if it’s not organised and ad hoc then things I’ve explored get lost and confused. So having some sort of structure helps me with that. As I move forward I will have multiple pieces on the go- inevitably things get disorganised and a bit ‘all over the place’ so it helps with that too. With colour especially it’s easy to think you’ll remember colours used etc but it’s surprisingly easy to lose track. So my organisation comes from my frustration with that rather than focus on organised!!
You are very welcome Rebecca- and you can create it all with a very limited palette as shown here. The other advantage of creating in this was is that the colours harmonise ( work together). Enjoy trying your own mixes. Such fun!
Enjoyed that very much, thank you. I love that you start with words, and using the paint chips is a clever way to get colour thoughts down quickly and develop your own mixes as and when.
Hi Jillayne yes it’s an overall feel plus the individual words that’s the start point- this was encouraged on several courses I’ve taken and it seemed to help. I think developing our own mixes is important- it’s only when you really start mixing that you learn more about colour - it’s amazing how many colours can be produced from 3 primaries and white!
You are welcome Kate. It’s something I’ve developed over a few years as I find it helpful to dig deeper. It’s also helpful when the colours evolve in a project which they often do. Food luck with it. Hope it’s helpful.
Thanks Melinda it’s early days for the project but previously when I was less organised I found that stuff got confused/lost - things end up getting more muddled anyway so being intentionally structured at the outset helps with that. I’m so glad you like the series so far- I think it has depth and angles to explore which is exciting to me. And having the information in a series journal is so useful as it gives a bit of a timeline and gathering of the materials and thoughts for the project.
So much great information packed into this video. I love your process and so learning so much from seeing it. I love how you organize the project into smaller units and build them up over time to create. Thanks for sharing these things !
Thanks Tom you are very welcome. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Yes I think it’s important to break things down so that it’s more manageable and less overwhelming. And as the work evolves the painting palette might well do too.
Thank you so much for your feedback Jillian- I’m so glad the video was helpful. Yes the sketchbook for each project is so helpful because it keeps things together so I will often dip into previous ones- having had experience of things getting lost or forgotten I decided to sort things more. It’s well worth the time and effort. I talk about aspects of it in my online sketchbook course too. www.lizackerleyart.com/for-artists
I like the idea of the colour swatches from paint charts and magazines, its a good springboard to start from
The approaches really help me so I’m sure they will you too. I find it helpful to see colours in this way rather than just separate swatches.
That's new to me the time frame when to pick the palette. Great expressive names for colours. Thank you once again for a great visual chat,
Thanks Leila - time frame? It’s fun coming up with the names and makes you think more about the subject.
You mixed very beautifull colors Liz. Inspirationaly.
Thanks Dieneke I’m glad you liked the video.

Thank You Liz Ackerley, for Reminding me of the Importance of Recording All Color Mixes. 🎉❤ Toom@CapeTown
You are welcome. I often get in quite a muddle with this if I’m not careful!
Seeing these beautiful colors is very inspiring. I look forward to trying more of my own mixes. Thanks for sharing.

Very helpful, thank you! I’m going give this organized approach to fleshing out my ideas a go. Can’t wait to get started!

The planning ahead with color for your art projects makes all the difference . Love your ramshackle series.

What a wonderful video, I love the idea to prepare a sketchbook for each project and those colours are to die for. I really need to get more organised

Thank you, that was really useful.
You are welcome Alison. Glad it was helpful
Great help as there is so much to remember! Can you mix warms with cools and transparents with opaque. I'm really confused with this? Thanks. 😮
You mean in the same painting? Yes you can - and having differences is important so that could work well
