    Technology and security is great, but our government and corporations have already proven themselves incapable of the kind of responsibility this power requires.
    Most people I don't think object to this technology because of its implications at face value, they object to this technology because current institutions cannot be trusted with this.
    The uproar on data mining and privacy concerns came because institutions were practicing a gross overreach of their power, so if someone is finally showing the self-restraint to make it illegal right away then good on them.

  • @tandy139
    @tandy139 5 лет назад +37

    I wonder if we can stop technology like this spreading. We give up our facial recognition pattern so easily to our phone by letting it draw bunny ears on our image or tagging our friends on social media. All the time the company behind the software is learning how to spot us in a crowd and probably earning big money selling our facial pattern. Perhaps living in a future police state dystopia is unnavoidable. If it can be done with technology, it will be. I fear humanity will learn the hard way as always.

    I am probably a paranoid but I've had cardboard covers over the cameras on my phone for ages. Ever since a company that had no legitimate use for camera data demanded access to camera information for their app, I've had them covered.

    • @holocene2164

      Nah, you're not paranoid. Most people don't really know how easy it is for these companies to take pictures of them, record them, locate them, etc without them even knowing it. Most people don't disable unnecessary permissions either. And, those companies are not only selling people's data, they are not securing them properly. Unfortunately, most people are tech illiterate. Knowing how to use snapchat is very different than understanding how snapchat works. In any case, instead of cardboard, you might want to try stickers. Works perfectly and won't elicit as much comments...

    One of the biggest things to be worried about is how securely facial recognition data in our personal devices and services is stored. I mean private companies already sell private data all the time, imagine facial recognition data with our name attached to it being distributed around. This data should be treated same as passwords and company should not know anything about it.
    General face recognition should be just straight up banned, and I think photos on social media services should be somehow protected against at least outside face recognition. Tough I'm not sure how viable that is.

  • @onee
    @onee 4 года назад +8

    I think we need perhaps some sort of law that only allows you to access this information when necessary. Like how the NSA has 24/7 access to your social media data. But it is only used when you are on a list with suspects.

    Facial recognition is profiling, profiling is wrong.
    They will automatically consider you guilty by association for anything and everything when as humans we have the right to experience anything and everything we want and explore everything.
    Perfect example is her LGBT comment.
    Say someone does visit these places, facial recognition will assume your guilty by association when in fact someone may be there just for information purposes only or human experience.
    Illegal all of it is illegal and violates human and civil rights.

    Another misuse of Facebook. We can totally trust commercial interest. I am getting tired of companies making profit off my personal information without my knowledge, or permission. Google already has encouraged people to use an app that will trace one's every step, purchase, inquiry, visit, and conversation via phone. Machine learning predicts what one will do next. Big Brother would love this commercial activity, and these companies would be happy to sell it to him. How many people would object if their parent or boss tracked their every move, purchase, inquiry, visit, or conversation?

    Greene is obviously intelligent and fair-minded, so I appreciated this conversation. However, many of the problems she cited are problems that existed before this technology emerged. Yes, the technology has a magnifying effect, both on the good outcomes and the bad ones. And yes, conversation about how policy can influence those outcomes is much needed. But as I listened I couldn't help but think that there was very little that was new.

    An Italian mafia boss who has been on the run for decades has been arrested after he was spotted on Google Maps.
    Gioacchino Gammino, 61, was found in Galapagar, Spain, where he was living under the name Manuel.
    A Google Street View shot showing a man resembling Gammino standing in front of a grocery shop was key to tracking the fugitive, investigators say.
    Gammino escaped a Rome prison in 2002 and was sentenced to life in jail the following year for murder.
    And you never expected Google to use those images for anything except helping you. Google got the reward for this man's capture. Millions of Europeans privacy was violated for Google's profit.

    WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A PERSON LOSES AND GAINS AND LOSES WEIGHT? Look at how actors can dedicate to a role where they play a POW or survivalist role? Angles change and fat deposition changes.
    Ive been mistaken many times for someone else at least 50 x .
    Its rediculous to rely on when trying to police ppl. Totally not reliable.

    People can always know where you are by tracking your phone. Besides people don't really care about privacy because we post all of our information on social media, we give up privacy for convenience.
