Also if you fill it with vinegar or descaler (as you would to clean a scaled-up kettle) it will dissolve the deposits.

The deposits are more likely to build up in the tank if the filter isn't changed regularly. Just opened mine due to a leak (3.5 years old) and it's quite clean inside, even though I live in a hard water (limescale) area.

If you ever looked at all large water distribution pipes under the street they are full of sand rocks, rust and junk. Hot water tanks in areas with hard water (high calcium and magnesium salts) water heaters get all filled up with the stuff. As a rule it's not toxic or dangerous.

It's not the tank buddy, it's your water. Make sure you have a filtration system connected and you are replacing the filter regularly. Switching to a kettle makes no difference, you are still ingesting those same hard water deposits.

That is what a typical water heater looks like inside.

Hard water deposits will do that to you. Here's how I clean my Insinkerator to prevent that from happening. You'll see pics in the video from when I took one of my old tanks apart.ruclips.net/video/MvRDqQkkXaE/видео.html&lc=UgyaOBet1k-OaMamwsx4AaABAg
