    House of the Dragon is an upcoming American fantasy drama television series created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal for HBO. It is a prequel to the television series Game of Thrones (2011-2019) and is based on Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood. Set two hundred years before the events of Game of Thrones the series chronicles the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to the Targaryen civil war, known as the "Dance of the Dragons", and the war itself. House of the Dragon received a straight-to-series order in October 2019 with casting beginning in July 2020 and principal photography beginning in April 2021 in the United Kingdom. The first season of the series is scheduled to premiere in 2022 and will consist of ten episodes.

    Maybe the "hours are critical" are because of how long it took them to get back and his wounds were already festering and we just missed the side eye Maester Oreo gave Rice Crispies for not having him heal at Rooks Rest... especially since that's what they did with his dragon. I mean they did take the castle and garrison it, surely the Maester didn't die during the explosion left by Mealeece. Unless of course all the Maesters from Rooks Rest to Rosby were all murdered by Aemond which is why his sword was unsheathed at the end of the battle, he wasn't trying to kill Aegon with it he just finished killing the Maester! And then afterwards he left them all to fly back to King's Landing alone and murdered all the other Maesters. He could get away with this by Larys Strong warging into all the guards of each castle so that they wouldn't notice Aemond murdering people blatantly mid day. It all makes sense now.

      I figure that the maester of Rooks Rest tried to get him stable but that he had no more than a single silver link in his chain (i.e., he only studied the very basics of medicine) and figure that Maester Orwyle (who had many silver links and was among the best healers in Westeros) would have a better chance of saving him.

    The Rhaenrya Alicent Sept scene was a really good example of my major problem with the season. There are a lot of well written, acted, and directed scenes that work very well on their own, that make no fucking sense whatsoever when you think about them in relation to both each other and the overarching plot. Steve Toussaint did a phenomenal job with the opening scene but as you said, he was on Dragonstone, how did the message get delivered, was there a week time jump in between episode 4 and 5? It boggles the mind that they can write such emotional scenes for such talented actors and just sorta wing it for everything else.

      @yasmina3999 Месяц назад +2

      Because they write separate scenes and not a linear plot.
      The scenes where Rhaenys shares wisdom with Rhaenyra look good, until you remember that for 6 years she believed that Rhaenyra killed her son and still kinda believes in it.
      The scene of Otto screaming at Aegon looks good until you remember that Otto killed Lord Caswell, didn’t say anything to Cole when he killed Lord Beesbury but suddenly lost his head because of 10-15 rat-catchers. Also, his speech about how stupid Aegon is and how good Viserys was looks beautiful if you don’t think that Aegon had previously done almost everything as Otto said and made one mistake after the death of his son ( which smart Otto should understand), while Viserys led the kingdom to civil war for 20 years.

      Rome depended mostly on food imported from Egypt, because the elites bought up all the food land and used it for their cattle, vineyards, etc rather than planting grain, and because the population of the city itself increased due to a lot of migration from the hinterlands and because those within the city were guaranteed a dole of free grain subsidized by Caesar.
      I don't think King's Landing would get much food from Essos, but it probably got a lot of its food from the Vale. The Reach produces the most food, but the Vale produces the second most as the Vale of Arryn proper (not including the mountains that make up most of the kingdom of the Mountains and the Vale) is the most fertile land on the continent. It is far more productive on an acre by acre basis, transporting food by ships on the Narrow Sea is probably more efficient. Still, the Reach should have plenty of food they could cart to the city along the Rose Road too.

    So, about the food geography: Bringing in food by land has a limited range because everything that can bring food by land eats food. A half a million people city like King's Landing may very well depend on food shipments by sea. Rome at its height got its food from North Africa, maybe King's Landing gets it from the Reach via the Narrow Sea (which would explain why pirates at the Stepstones were such a priority problem in Season 1).

    The plot with the food crisis could have been fixed if it was caused by the mismanagement of Aegon 2's council instead of the blockade. They could have mentioned that the food is being sent to the front to feed the soldiers and since winter is coming, they need to keep as much food in reserves as possible.

  • @lamnaa
    @lamnaa Месяц назад +1

    The Blackwood's actions being shocking is kinda weird because it all sounds... pretty much like standard pre-modern warfare. Robbing peasents was how you fed a army until the steam train was invented. And hostage taking is just... how it goes in the Middle Ages and in Westros. One of the first characthers we meet in Game of Thrones, Theon, is a hostage.

    King's Landing getting food via naval supply makes sense, given how much more efficient ships are compared to wagons pulled by animals who need to eat grain themselves (even if you get small horses that can get by with only grass, the grass near the roads is limited and they can't pull as hard). For most of the realm, sending the food to King's Landing by ship makes more sense than sending it by land. We have trucks and trains and planes, and ships are still the most efficient transport method by a country mile.
    But now that the blockade is in place, all the transporting has to shift to land routes which leads to overloaded logistics networks. So it's quite possible that food transports are stuck kind of near King's Landing. If you're about to starve, going towards the food to save time makes sense, and in the city it might be sold out before you can get any. If only the show had actually explained it a bit more.

    @wilsonfricke7079 Месяц назад +1

    okay here all these complaints are valid, It didn't break my immersion personally and I can think of some explanations for these hitches, but it woudl be some very simple rewriting to put them into the episode as exposition...well I'll go and name them off anyway,
    1. either the Maester did send off a raven as rooks rest was being captured (the main body of the castle was destroyed but the tallest twoer was intact that is the most logical place for the ravenry to be) or elese Baela was sent out when Rhaenys mission was taking alarmingly long and saw the beheaded dragon on the castle ruins and flew back to tell Rhaenyra who sent a raven to Corlys on that note...
    2. The army could be very quickly shadowed by a ship (even the royal barge that got so much screen time in season 1 and they probably still have the set and cgi rendering for) and Criston coudl have loaded Meleys head along with Aegon in a box for a swift but not instantaneous sail back to the Capitol under guard of Vhaegar where an escort party was arranged for their ticker-tape parade
    3. Yeah there's no explaining the small folks reactoin to Meleys, well I mean there is as they woudl reasonably see it as a portent of a war of dragons being brought to their home town, a lot of them do mention how Rhaenyra will want to answer for this, but there's no explaining the authors intent that they were sad because they loved Meleys, that dragon-floor-explosion scene is just cancer, a mistake made in a fit of passion and lacking in oversight that keeps cascading to ruin future scenes
    4. Jace wanting to secure the crossing does make sense to get the Starks on the west bank to check the Lannister Army that is very leisurly making its way across the Red Fork to take Harrenhal (maybe they're buildling lots of barges) Jace does explain this later but there has been a real loose usage of the term "Riverlands" so far, its mostly being used to describe the particular area that lies between the red fork and the gods eye not so much the Trident
    5. The starvation in the captial does make sense if you consider the geopolitical situation, at least as it was establsiehd in the books at this point, Daemon has a stranglehold on the Northern Kingsroad from Harrenhal while the Reach's bounty is being cut off along the Rose Road by Bitterbridge which decalred for Rhaenyra after Lord Casewell as beheaded, or hanged in the show, also the capitol does rely heavily on the breadbasket around the flatlands for a lot of their food as seaborn traffic is a lot more efficient. The small folk are trying to make for Tumbleton which can still be getting shipments of food from along the Mander past Bitter Bridge.
    6. I think that Simon was shot as if he could be looking at whatever he saw Daemon looking at before refocusing, but no I think she is a physical something or other being heavily glamoured not some Weirwood aparation
    7. Baela was talking about his exploration of the Summer Seas on one of his Nine Voyages not the war in the step stones
    8. The River Lords gathered at one castle, likely Darry, agreed on standing up to Daemon with one voice, and then road to Harrenhal as soon as they were a full compliment to wake him in the wee hours of the morning. They are more confident in standing up to him as a unit and that can't be done by a raven it needs to be in person to make the statement they want. They are upset particuarly by the sacrilige the Blackwoods comitted in burning down septs, also the greater part of the women and children taken would belong to knights and lords to use as hostages for their compliance but this made the other Highborn of the Riverlands protest in solidarity it didn't necessarily come down to symapthy for the small folk (whose well being the Lords do care for to an extent for pragmatic reasons, guaranteeing their safety is essential to the feudal contract and an outbreak of brigandage in the kingdom would put the peasants in a tizzy, as a group they did have some leverage over their lords especially on the cusp of winter as the harvest is being brought in)
    9. The riderless dragons being mentioned in the last season finale where mentioned with the idea that Rhaena might be able to claim one of them, the camera clearly pans over to her to indicate this in that scene. That's why Daemon approached Vermithor with a song, to get him accostomed to human company so that he could then bring his daughter down to give it a shot. They do mention Rhaena trying and failing to claim one in this scene which is something I would like to have seen as its so vital to her arc in this show. Daemon might also have been hinting at trying to seek out Laenor when he mentioned Seasmoke, not sure how they would pull that off unless they did the whole Laenor is show-Addam posing as his own bastard but the show didn't go that route. It does still make sense though that taking the step from exposing family members to danger by claimng a dragon to allowing practical strangers to cliam dragons fills them with trepidation.
    All of these things though could be expressed with very simple and illuminating throw away lines, or full blown new scenes that would be well worth the budget I'd say, and were'nt so I have to admit it is a flaw with the writing...I'll give it a 7/10

    I'm fairly sure that the commoners are not all dragon history buffs. Few would remember Balerion's death, and dying of old age is not the same as being killed. As for Arrax, the government's official stance could be that he disappeared after Luke crashed him in a storm. The crowd's reaction to seeing the very embodiment of their rulers' power destroyed is among the few things I didn't have an issue with in this episode.

    I think the naval blockade make sense as transporting goods by sea is way more efficient than by land. Delivering goods by land is extremely expensive in this world. And for the people to get hungry, it's enough to blockade some of the food, even if they do more transport by land now to compensate the loss of sea travel, it's not nearly enough.
