This has been mentioned multiple times in the comments below, but FYI that credit card number you see is from a demo setup in 1Password. You won’t be able to buy anything with it ha ha. 😁
@@Abhilashbbb True, but it was only added in Windows 10. In Windows 7, the instructions looked like this: 1. Go to your device manager and find your device (your mouse or trackpad) 2. Find your device's Hardware ID. 2. Open regedit.exe 3. Lookup the following thing: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Enum/HID//Device Parameters 4. Change the key named FlipFlopWheel from 0 to 1. Not fun, so I'm glad that MS added this as an option in device preferences in Win10.
It's funny because I scroll the Windows way for computers, but I apply this method of "scrolling" to console controllers by inverting my y-axis. To move the stick down, it looks up, and vice versa.
I know a lot of people feel that way about it. I was training a guy at work on the new Mac they gave him and the idea of natural scrolling on his mouse put his head on tilt (he's been a Windows-only user up to this point).
The moment Apple introduced natural scrolling I immediately started using it and adapted to it. For the Trackpad this really is a way more natural way of scrolling and I couldn't go back to the old way of scrolling. I always use the Trackpad, but I think using natural scrolling for a mouse is strange. I think it's really strange natural scrolling can't be adjusted independently for mouse and Trackpad. When you go to System Preferences and disable natural scrolling for mice it's also turned off for the Trackpad. Both the setting for natural scrolling in the Mouse pane as the one in the Trackpad pane are just linked to the same natural scrolling setting. They should be independent of each other, so there should be a separate setting for each input device.
ijslandernl I do see the case for having separate settings there. We also have to remember that Apple is thinking about their own Magic Mouse when setting up natural scrolling. With Apple’s mouse natural scrolling feels great to me but with a regular scroll wheel it is a bit different.
Great question! It's good to use a VPN on your laptop even when connected to a mobile hotspot. ZDNet covers it here: www.zdnet.com/article/how-to-get-vpn-protection-for-your-laptop-while-using-a-smartphone-wi-fi-hotspot/
Good refresher for people who have used a Mac for a while. Especially hot corners. I hated it but am rethinking it now with the key combinations. Thanks!!
Used macOS for the first time today on my first ever apple product. Hadn't used a trackpad in 2 years but when I used the MacBook Air trackpad , it was so smooth and amazing. Took me like an hour to get accustomed to the two fingers scroll thing and it's very nice.

Sari Ta Yes, I think that’s important for any computer. I mention Sophos in the video and I it’s a great option. They have a free version for home users that is quite capable. You can find it at home.sophos.com/en-us.aspx
@@EverydayApple1984 that's great! I will try from that link. and my very last curiosity; will it be safe enough to use these free antivirus software? Thank you for responding 😊
Sari Ta Glad to help! It’s definitely safe. Sophos has a paid option and they basically use the free version to try and funnel people in to the subscription option, but you get the same basic protections. The paid version just has some other useful functionality.
everybody might have a different experience. Never used an anti virus program on my mac until recently (just to test it out). been having my mac since 2015. I do have an ad blocker, and a file cleaner app. Dr. Cleaner (free). through that app I got to Dr. Antivirus which is also free. both work great.

For back up, why would I use time machine or back blaze instead of iCloud? Am I wrong to synchronize my iPhone, iPad and my new Mac Pro with my Apple ID using iCloud?
For me, it's not an either-or. I currently back up 3 ways: 1) docs with iCloud, 2) Most of my hard drive with Backblaze in the cloud, and 3) My entire hard drive as an exact copy to an external hard drive, using Carbon Copy Cloner.
Just treated myself to a mac, and this helped alot, especially since the trackpad was driving me nuts i was about to return it. Thanks also for the backup tips and security tips, most videos dont even mention those

They are both fine options, but prefer 1Password because it creates stronger suggested passwords but you can use keychain by creating your own strong passwords (use upper/small case letters, numbers and symbols), then you can choose to save them with iCloud. But an advantage with 1password is that it will inform you when there is been a vulnerability so you know to change your password when that happens. That's incredibly helpful when you have you have many different passwords, as I do.
I knew about basically all of these. I ve been a Mac user for many many years. But there is one thing that I learned that I was amazed I didn't know about, and that is you can combined hot corners with a hot key. Thank you so much 😁
Jason.... speaking to you from 2020 (late to this vid!) -- Would you consider a larger Cursor, when you demonstrate? Trying to read any text, follow your directions-- AND spot the moving Cursor can be one too many---! Found Myself doing mini-rewinds, to see the action..... Thanks!
Awesome! Yes, you’ll have an adjustment period! I’m hoping to have a video posted in June about what System Preferences you should look at first with a new Mac, so keep an eye out for that.
Make sure you have the Apple Store - take off the default for being able to reboot off an external drive - so you can... reboot off an external drive. My 2018 kept crashing, trying to install Mojave and I the Apple Store Network was slow... so it took hours to reinstall the OS, just so we could enable the external boot... which ended up enabling Mojave to install successfully. (Maybe have a sequence wrong but I spent hours on call and in the store until I was back to my base machine...)
George Rady Yeah, by default Macs with the T2 processor will not boot from an external drive, which is a security feature until you need to do that. 😬 AppleInsider.com just posted something about this a few months back, but that article doesn’t help you now, I suppose.
I make sure my external drives are plugged in before I go to bed because I have the backup schedule set for the middle of the night. And I will plug in the photos drive when I need to open Photos.

It depends on 1) your budget 2) what software you are accustomed to using. If you want a Mac, then you’d do fine with anything made in the last 5-7 years for the purposes you listed. If you can afford something new, then get a new MacBook Air, but here's an example of something that is a little older but would do fine: amzn.to/2tzpg9l

Kalpesh Panchal that accept for number 4. Unless you are planning to spend a lot of time on websites that are not secure, free WiFi is just fine and VPN’s are a waste of money. Unless you want to protect your metadata from your provider or want to illegally watch things that are not available in your country. And even then it’s still the question if or when the VPN gets hacked and if your comfortable to intrust some random VPN employees with your data. I mean, I am not an expert on this kind of stuff by any means, but this is just what I’ve read and heard from people who know a lot more about this then I do.
Scrolling is a matter of perspective. You can either think you’re pulling the top of the page, or think you’re pushing the bottom. You can’t say one is more natural than the other. But in Mac, the fingers move in the same direction as the page.
saikat93ify Yes, that’s right. Of course Apple will refer to it as the more “natural” way to do it, but you’re either pulling the page (like in iOS) or pulling down the scroll bar on the side of the screen.
They are both fine options, but I prefer 1Password because it creates stronger suggested passwords. If you want, you can use keychain by creating your own strong passwords (use upper/small case letters, numbers and symbols), then you can choose to save them with iCloud. So there’s a program called mega that opens which is not shown in the video. It has a max limit of what can be downloaded and you have to wait for 6 hrs to complete the download. I’m not sure if that’s for everyone now or just because I apparently downloaded the main file twice it put me over a limit. They do work as per the video but some may have to wait 5 mins for them to do so. For some reason mine took a bit to recognize the serializer to actually open. I’m on an old Mac (early 2011) though that I figured out how to install Catalina. That might be why.

1. I’ve set up a hot corner but when I click there, top left, nothing happens. Any idea why? 2. When I try to set up Time Machine I am led to “other airport time capsule”. What on earth is this? Don’t think I’ve got any back up yet. I do love your no nonsense style. I have managed to follow some of your recommendations!
Hi -- couple of observations. VPN's cause a lot of sites to fail or not authenticate. You can't log into PayPal, for example, or sites that use cookies to 'trust' a particular computer. A lot of sites that you store in 1Password or LastPass won't behave normally either -- needs to be used judiciously. Same general observation for password management. Increasingly a lot of sites separate the screens for UserID and Password, or the password manager doesn't recognize the fields or loses focus.... have to use THIS tip judiciously, as well. In terms of other tips, I'd recommend BOTH a Time Machine and a cloned backup.... makes restoration a breeze. I think you could update this video or add some additional tips around moving from one mac to another (migration assistant, re-installations, etc... Thx.
Great feedback and suggestion. I'll add migration to my idea board (maybe I should buy a new MacBook so I can do such a video heh heh heh). You are right that VPN can cause the occasional issue, depending on what site you are at, but my experience is still good at most sites (I just logged into PayPal to test it and I was able to log in... I'm sure results could vary though). As far as 1Password goes, it does a dang good job of handling those separate user/pass screens... But again, there is the occasional hiccup.
Is the vpn just necessary on the macbook or also on the windows laptops? I always had a windows but just switched to apple, never used a vpn on my windows.
eline mars VPN encrypts the data you are sending and receiving on whatever computer you’re using (windows or Mac) so others-such as your ISP or someone snooping on a public Wi-Fi network you’re using-can’t read it. The ability of VPNs to protect your privacy are all the more relevant considering that your ISP can now legally record your web activity and sell your history to advertisers and other organizations that want to know something about you. Privacy is a huge issue.
Just got a new MacBook Air and it’s pretty overwhelming even though I have an iPhone an iwatch lol. Are the password apps really safe? No one else can access my account? I have so much to learn but I’ll start with this video thanks.
FeliciaTakesLasVegas Just start with the one question, what do I want to do with this MacBook? Then learn what you need to from there. And yes, the password apps are safe due to the encryption they use.

muziklova220 1Password does generate better passwords but it’s getting hard to justify the cost for 1P when you can create your own complex passwords and save them via iCloud. I’m going to release an updated version of this video in 2019 and may alter that part a bit.

Heh, there most certainly best VPN's out there - PIA, Nord, or Proton, in that order, for pricing, what they offer, and the technicalities (which I won't get into here) those are the best, a VPN isn't just "a VPN", there's a LOT that goes into one and why choosing one because they offer a lifetime membership is a terrible idea - especially privacy and/or anonymity.
Thanks for the additional info and the three recommendations. I'll start gathering a better knowledge base about this topic before posting anything else about it.
@@EverydayApple1984 No problem! Thank you for reading the comments and being willing to look into it. And if you're looking to use one PIA offers everything form proxy, multiple country's and states in the US, and no bandwidth limit and for their price of either $6.99 /month or $40 per year ($3.99 /mo) and their encryption options and not to mention their reputation and the fact they they keep no logs - they're by far the best out there.

For those of you who dont want your data being backed up to the cloud, just have an auto backup program that backs up all documents on your hard drive to a flash drive and you can rotate between 2 different ones and keep one off site.

Gregory Rose III Yes, on today’s MacOS or on an iOS device like iPhone or iPad, iCloud offers to save your passwords for you and that’s definitely a good option. Good luck with the endeavor to learn coding!
Soysauce I’m not sure for RUclips but for google chrome you have to search it on safari and there will be a download for Mac option and you can set it as your default search engine instead of safari
You should be able to just do a Google search for "Google Chrome" and you'll get a download link. And there is no stand-alone app for RUclips on the Mac. Just use your web browser to go to YT.
Joshi Ji This is a point I wish I would’ve addressed in the video, but I like to have more than one backup method. But your question is valid and a lot of people will probably just want to stick with one method, like iCloud or Backblaze. I’m finding Backblaze is more cost effective for backing up everything though.
Hot corners with modifier keys - a godsend - so now I'm using them again - I kept triggering off my screensaver (which is same as yours - top left with 5 second timeout for password). Now I use CTRL to activate, and bottom left to show Desktop when CTRL is held.
dash8brj Nice! Yeah I probably should go ahead and set up the modifier keys on my Mac at work because I train people on that one and the first time they hit a hot corner they freak out when all the windows go flying ha ha. 😂

lori Lori 1Password has a lot more functionality, but as of 2019, keychain is competent enough to save your passwords and retrieve them with ID method. I still prefer 1Password because it creates stronger passwords for me but you can create your own strong password (use upper/small case letters, numbers and symbols) and then save them with iCloud, so that's a fine option too.
Finally a video that actually helps 😂 I finally coughed up the money to buy myself a MacBook for college, and I’ve been searching RUclips for a video of what applications I should have, and what I should do with the MacBook. yea same I was thrown off when you said that, I recently switched to Macbook and I "natural" scrolled without even thinking about it.
It's funny because I scroll the Windows way for computers, but I apply this method of "scrolling" to console controllers by inverting my y-axis. To move the stick down, it looks up, and vice versa.
Kevin Franco same I learned to play inverted way back, now it just feels natural.
Rachael Zzz Cool Story Bro
Natural scrolling makes sense for touch and track pad; but, it does NOT make sense for a mouse.
Jaynen XO if you have a Magic Mouse totally makes sense

@@EverydayApple1984 that's great! I will try from that link. and my very last curiosity;
will it be safe enough to use these free antivirus software?
Thank you for responding 😊
Sari Ta Glad to help! It’s definitely safe. Sophos has a paid option and they basically use the free version to try and funnel people in to the subscription option, but you get the same basic protections. The paid version just has some other useful functionality.
everybody might have a different experience. Never used an anti virus program on my mac until recently (just to test it out). been having my mac since 2015. I do have an ad blocker, and a file cleaner app. Dr. Cleaner (free). through that app I got to Dr. Antivirus which is also free. both work great.
Saving this for Wednesday when my MacBook gets here...I’m a windows user switching over and really wouldn’t have a clue what to do first if not for videos like yours. Thanks for the info!

*1. Mouse settings*
2. Hot corners
3. Password manager (1password)
4. Choose and install a VPN app
5. Back up data (time machine / Backblaze)...
You got it!

You should avoid touchbar models. And you really should avoid Time Machine.

Just be sure you are logged in with your Apple ID. But keep in mind that MacOS apps usually are paid for separately from iOS apps.
This is the one of the LONGEST docks I have ever seen

I just bought a new MacBook Pro but I’m only doing hot corners and backup to an external sd. One pw and vpn is overkill 🤷♀️
I can understand that. Enjoy the new MBPro!
My new Mac should be in my hands within 2 weeks. Never had one before so I’m trying to absorb as much info as I can get. Thank you for this.
Doesn’t Apple have it’s own password manager? Keychain or something? Think you can sync it with iCloud.
yup

Space gray. It honestly doesn’t look dark
Thank you! My parents gifted me the new mac book pro for my graduation and as an over decade long windows user... adjusting has been hard lol
Oddly enuff, it took the techs at the Apple Store a while to figure that one out..
I’ve been using a Mac for years and still found this helpful.
So glad it helped!
For the backups, do you need all the external hard drives plugged in all the time? Ex... your photos external hard drive.
I make sure my external drives are plugged in before I go to bed because I have the backup schedule set for the middle of the night. And I will plug in the photos drive when I need to open Photos.
Thank you so much. Kind of a dumb question I know, but I would never know unless I asked! 😂 thanks for your answer! Makes perfect sense!
Perhaps the first thing you should do is get rid of all the crap in your dock and use spotlight

1. Disable Natural Scrolling
2. Setup Hot Corners
3. Install 1Password
4. Install a VPN
5. Choose a BACKUP Method (Time Machine, BackBlaze, etc.)
Kalpesh Panchal This list with details is also in the description. Thanks for summarizing though!
Install Windows

Wow ! That’s a lot of info. I am a windows user but I have an iPhone and iPad Pro 12.9. Some useful info here but a lot to learn. I’m in the process of upgrading my laptop and have been researching the pros and cons of finally getting a MacBook Pro or the new HP Spectre X360. Decisions! Decisions!
Randall Holmes If you are already familiar with Windows there is something to be said for sticking with what you know, but I think it’s worth it to switch over to MacOS. After watching a few RUclips tutorials on switching from Windows to MacOS you’d probably be good to go. Good luck with the decision!

2. When I try to set up Time Machine I am led to “other airport time capsule”. What on earth is this? Don’t think I’ve got any back up yet.

Love that Vulfpeck is on the other tabs

muziklova220 1Password does generate better passwords but it’s getting hard to justify the cost for 1P when you can create your own complex passwords and save them via iCloud. I’m going to release an updated version of this video in 2019 and may alter that part a bit.
Why pay for any password saving apps when apple includes that service for free and is better trusted.
