“Hi Ren" is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered more than 6 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day.
Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on RUclips are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.”
Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal.
Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world.
Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” and his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake).”
As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”), Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), his former bandmate, Romain Axisa (“French Song”), which are all great.
"The Big Push" busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are awesome and well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong,” “War Pigs,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive.
In anticipation of his stay in Canada for more treatments, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work.

Ren is definitely a genius, and also VERY skilled at his craft. I'm so glad that he chose to write something so vulnerable, as it tells those of us that are also "sick" that we're not alone, and that we can have a voice.

It's pretty much the same reaction from everyone, speechlessness. No one knew what was about to happen when they started the video. It's incredible really and you said it man, he's a genius. With just a guitar he has inspired millions, who never heard of him a day before hearing it for the first time. That is success, talent, genius or whatever you want to call it. Great reaction though, you brought up some things that made me think about it again.

Man I’ve gone down the Ren musical genius rabbit hole and have now watched Hi Ren reactions over fifty times. Your reaction has been one of my favorites, the way you understood the genius of all of it and your reaction to all of it was amazing.
IMO, He’s done something that if we all would let it could/would/should change mindsets in humanity, as I have watched multiple people, cultures, genres, react to this and they are all the same in the end they are moved beyond words as I was and am. And at least for me, makes me want to be a better human being for myself, and to others! Faith hope and love to all!

Like most people I was introduced to Ren through Hi Ren and he blew my mind. Then I dove deeper into his catalog and he blew my mind again.
Do the Tale of Jenny & Screech (FULL) next to see what I'm talking about. Pure storytelling genius. It's a trilogy of songs combined into one video and I promise it will blow your mind. Ren is one of a kind, there is nobody else making music like this today.
In today's music center were everything sounds the same like mid to late 80's but then Nirvana & Grunge/Alternative Rock came & saved music, Ren is exactly the artist needed to inspire & rejuvenate music! He has "IT"! Your mind will be blown the more you go down the Ren Rabbit Hole Sway!

What's hard is the lyrical cadence within the verses. He barely has time to breathe. He has a good handle on controlling his breath between words.

Since I've discovered Ren he has quickly shot to the top of my favorites. All his music is great. Hunger and chalk Outlines are two of my favorites from him.
Most of Ren's stuff is not this theatrical, except for Jenny and Screech. You'd want to do the full version on that one. It's a long one, but it's actually three shorter songs that tell a tragic tale, and they need to be played in order. The Hunger is just a raw display of his rapping talents. Sick Boi goes well with this one, but it's more something you could bump to. I think you'd like the beat on that one. Chalk Outlines is deep af. Check that one out if you want to know what it's like having two angels sing in your dagone ears. This dude is on another world with an ocean of talent all to himself. My fav is Hold On from back in the day. Talent like that don't come from nowhere. He's been at this for a minute.
Ren is a deep dive man. Really talented in many areas. Checkout Money Game 1&2, Genesis, Dear God, Tale of Jenny and Screech (full). You're gonna love this guy.

I'm a 49yr old man and come upon Ren when this dropped I've heard this song at least 50 times and still amazed by his music his art.. actually all I've heard so far from him is pure art and a very talented young man. Sucks he has had to deal with his illness but glad he's finally getting the help he's needed over the last 10yrs or so. Ren spent years in his bedroom with disease. Even before COVID. So he had A LOT of time to reflect. Unlike any, at least in this lifetime. REN IS THE VOICE OF A GENERATION
