I swear to god, there could be an entire college level course analyzing this song. I love how Ren's monologue at the end re-contextualizes the song. The brighter the light shines, the darker the shadow it casts. The "dark" Ren doesn't escalate until Ren starts to get more confident.

Ren is different ... in all ways good. This performance has brought grown men and women to tears, and made more than one person reflect, deeply, on their own life. This song is healing and cathartic to many. It is kind of the "Bohemian Rhapsody" for mental health. Ren's life story is rough, yet he is still "standing besides us today". You should go down the Ren rabbit hole and see just how talented of a performer Ren is. He is a bard like story teller, rapper, hip hop throw back, singer, and modern day minstrel. He drags people into genres like rap and hip hop that have never listened to anything in that genre, and they are awed by the performance. Great reaction ... please let the tears flow ... new sub!

    Welcome to the RENaissance. ❤
I think you might be the first reaction I've seen to specifically name intrusive thoughts. As Ren says, it's not a battle to fight against them, but they are a part of us and we have to learn how to live and work with them, to learn how to dance.
For those of us who are creative, we have an active channel through which to guide that dance. As a writer, I use my intrusive thoughts as fodder for my work. And once they're on paper/on the screen, then they become fiction and I can move on.
If you want to dive down the rabbit hole, the usual suggestions include:
    > Chalk Outlines ft Chinchilla (live) - featuring more of his singing voice
    > The Tale of Jenny & Screech (full) - a tragedy from the streets of London as told by a modern bard 😿
    > Sick Boi - the 2nd release from his upcoming album 🔥
    > Illest of Our Time - the 3rd and most recent release from his upcoming album 🔥🔥
The following are all more rap/hiphop and are all great to listen to:
    > Losing It
    > The Hunger - my personal favorite just for all of the wordplay and flow changes
    > Power
    > Genesis
    > What You Want
    > Bittersweet Symphony
    > Right Here, Right Now
    ~ Peace 🕊

The first time I was TRAUMATIZED....I started therapy....now I love to watch reactions, and am able to enjoy the music, the wordplay, the acting.....It was all TOO MUCH at first. Too much truth. Bite the bullet, watch the whole thing FIRST. Go ahead and cry, everyone does. Then go back and watch it again, and again. I love the other reactions....I'm not alone, not by a LONG SHOT....He just put SPOTLIGHTS on the elephant in the room, and calls it out without hesitation. This is so much more important than music being "pretty" or "soothing." So much more than "I can dance to it." Who cares? This....THIS is everything.

Great reaction. Ren became seriously ill in 2010 but his condition was misdiagnosed for 6 or 7 years. The meds he was given just made him worse and he was often stuck in bed for up to 23 hours a day. He became resigned to not surviving his 20s. In 2016 he was finally correctly diagnosed with Lyme Disease and he was given stem cell transplants which improved his health. However the years of incorrect treatments have left Ren with a badly damaged immune system and some brain damage. He is currently receiving specialist treatment in Canada which is likely to take at least 6 months

Part of me wants to think because he's independent he may not get the same treatment as artist on a label but that's purely speculative. Something to keep in mind with Ren's videos. Ren and his cinematographer Sam don't do anything by accident they are both sticklers for detail. Everything you hear or see is intentional, this includes shadows, breathing, his facial expressions... for example(spoiler free) in the tales of Jenny and Screech, he visibly shakes himself to prepare for one section.... they are fantastic together. Ren creates the art, and Sam captures it perfectly

The more you learn about Ren and his story and continued struggles the more and more you become a fan. His story alone is what made me become a fan but then I listened to his music… when people say this guy is on a whole different level, it’s really no exaggeration. He dips into so many different genres from folk to hip hop to reggae to classic rock, etc. He also plays literally every instrument, produces and mixes his own beats for his rap songs, and for his music videos it’s usually himself and his friends working the cameras. He’s a Busker in the UK and has been doing this since he was 12 years old. His latest single Illest of Our Time came out a couple weeks ago on his 33rd birthday. There’s not many people in this world that truly “get” music the way that Ren does. I truly hope you dive into more of his stuff to see his full range!

Love this song. Our biggest critic is ourselves. If that voice wins we give up but we can always push through and prove that voice wrong.

I really appreciate your reaction. Chels, as I saw you listening, it was like me listening for the first time. Ren's material is so raw and vulnerable, and most importantly, it connects us all in a time where we are so disconnected. This performance transcends anything I have ever seen before, and it is a true work of art. Ren has suffered for so long with many illnesses, and for him to put his heart and soul into this had to be exhausting (Lyme disease can be so brutal). Like he said, he is choosing to be a student, and not a victim. How empowering!

The infamous words to take from this and when you hear it is "You are your own worse critic." This is true in so many ways. The fact that he expresses it so much to where the fact that when you listen to this. There are so many ways that people to relate to it. It's not just something that is true for musicians but so many other people can suffer from this. All of us have that constant internal struggle and have that consistent battle that we must overcome. We suffer through it and some people may not understand it. A LOT of people will definitely be able to relate to this. I have responded to this song on other channels and it's always refreshing to see other peoples reaction. To know that other people have some form of connection to it. To know that there are people who relate to this and I am still always enjoying said reactions. Not just from this but from the other rather deep one that he has done. I am sure you guys have reacted to it but if you haven't the name of it is called "Su*cide"

I saw a post about the Big Push and I looked back to see if you reacted to them.
I noticed 2 things. You commented on how talented Ren is and I also saw that you guys are fans of rock music.
Ren was (not sure if he still is) on a band called The Big Push. They have a few videos of them doing street performances in the U.K.
They do War Pigs, Painted Black, Sympathy for the Devil and Paranoid by Black Sabbath. Wait until you hear how good (great actually) Ren truly is with his vocals and, especially, his guitar play! He plays the electric guitar so well he could just be a guitar player and be great
You'll see when you react. It will blow your mind!

This was an enjoyable reaction. I wrote this introduction to Ren when I first discovered him earlier this year, as there wasn’t a Wikipedia entry for people to look him up prior to March 2023. I have posted this info to every “Hi Ren” reaction I have come across since, and I hope it will be of some use to the uninitiated. “Hi Ren” is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered nearly 10 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day.
Ren is an independent artist/singer/songwriter/busker from Brighton, UK. He plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern-day bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on RUclips are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.”
Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal.
Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world.
Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right Here, Right Now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” "Hold On," his new release “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake),” and his latest release "The Illest Of Our Time," just to name a few.
Ren's performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned It /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the Moon/No Diggity,” “Feeling Good/Trouble So High/Masterblaster (Jammin'),” “Latch,” “Wild Thoughts/Crazy in love (Live Session),” “Same Old Situation (Live, feat. Ren),” “What Went Wrong” Part I&II) are definitely a must. Also, his collaborations with Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), Orlean ("Jessica"), his former bandmate Romain Axisa (“French Song”), are all great. Last but not least, Ren’s busking sessions with Liv Sangster are awesome. I recently discovered that Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful.
"The Big Push" (Ren Gill, Gorran Kendall, Romain Axisa, and Glen Chambers) busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are amazing and well worth checking out. All but the drummer sing lead vocals at times. Ren, Gorran, and Romain all play multiple instruments. Ren plays acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, and drums. Gorran plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, and harmonica. Romain plays acoustic, electric, bass guitar, ukulele, and piano. They are each incredibly gifted artists, and their solo work is completely different from each other. Well worth checking out. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," "Watch Out," “War Pigs,” “Roadhouse Blues,” "My Generation," “Paint It Black,” "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong” are awesome. On “These Boots Are Made For Walking,” “Praise You” (Fatboy Slim Cover), “What Kind Of Woman Is This,” all three take a turn singing. The songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive.
The band, at least for the time being, performed their last official busking session and gave their last concert in September of last year (2022) due to the fact that Ren was leaving for Canada to undergo specialized medical care and surgeries for his multiple health issues.
In anticipation of his stay in Canada, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work. Ren just released his newest song, “Illest Of Our Time,” on his birthday, March 29.
