  • Narn Centauri War returns to Babylon 5 from B5's The Fall of Night (episode 22, season 2). Please note this is all the relevant CGI extracted in order from the episode.
    I recently started re-watching (yet again) my Babylon 5 DVD box set collection. Figured I'd do a favour to all my subscribers that did so because of the B5 content I uploaded in the past.
    Although it's entertainment, we can also consider it educational for anyone studying CGI of the mid 90's.
    This is a non-monetized channel.

    The thing is Centauri warships are very much glass cannons between ion cannons, plasma accelerators, gravitic torpedoes and lasers they can dish out a massive amount of firepower but cannot sustain even a small fraction of it in return - to the point that a single squadron of starfuries firing at the more common Vorchan-class cruiser will tear it apart in seconds - due to both the fact that Centauri doctrine favours speed and agility and a weakness shared by all ships with a gravity based propulsion system in that the wings/fins where the drive field projectors are have very limited to no armour. The result is damage there can quickly lead to the loss of the ship even Minbari ships have this weakness.

    • @Gothic7876

      Even after earth gets gravitic drives they still retain the doctrine of lots of thick heavy armor and loads of guns. In the books they actually revamped the old Nova class with the new engine system because now they had artificial gravity which allowed the Nova to be basically the fleet flagship due to its size and firepower, supported by Warlocks and Omegas, and escorted by the Hyperions and older Olympus class ships.

    I always wondered WHY the Centauri Cruiser decided to open fire on the only outpost of a known militaristic race. They had to know that Babylon 5 would be well defended AND considered a neutral "harbor". That neutrality alone should have been obeyed. They could easily have followed the Narn into slipspace by using fighters.

      @AndrewJamesWilliams 3 месяца назад +2

      Arrogance and overconfidence are the main reason that Centauri captain opened fire. He didn't think that the station would fire back and that its weapons systems had been upgraded a few months prior. Of course he also didn't think that if he did destroy the station he would start dozens of new wars including a war with the Minbari. Minbari who would certainly quickly pounded the Centauri into the floor and if Morden's "associates" tried to help the Centauri the Minbari would declare them Shadow minions and burn there worlds to glass with there most feared weapon the antimatter converter.

    This whole situation is based off of normal neutral status ports procedures. When two adversaries enter a neutral port, they aren't allowed to fight otherwise the locals may punish them. When one of the ships decides to leave, the other may not depart until a minimum 24hrs later. When the Centauri powered up to attack, within the control zone of a diplomatic station, they declared themselves renegade.
    This battle is less about the rising power of Humanity or the fading status of the Centauri, than it is about the growing disregard of diplomatic and legal norms by the Centauri Republic. Acts such as this will only drive the galactic isolation of the Centauri. The closest comparable act I can think of is PRC diplomatic staff grabbing protesters off the street and dragging them within their compound in order to beat the crap out of. An equally unacceptable act by any state claiming the status of a civillised nation.

      They were all bark no bite. They drove the Centauri off their homeworld through a war of attrition, their advantage to their growth was because the Centauri emperor was liberalising his people, Sheridan said he was generous to the Narn, only ever made concessions and the Centauri fell back. It should be noted, the Narn conquered remote colonies of other races yet they fell hard to the Dilgar and the Gaim, the latter of which they tried to take their homeworld. While the Shadows intervened three times in the Narn Centuari war, it was shown the the Centauri won most campaigns and offensives without Shadow intervention because the Narn were just a paper tiger, G'kars uncle admitted they were facing defeat in mere months and his attack on Gorash VII was but a stalling tactic in the hopes they'd form alliances (they had none thanks to attacking other races), building more ships and troops.
      On the Centauri side, they looked weak but they were a sleeping giant, they beat back the Interstellar Alliance with robot ships and took a few blows under Drakh rule but the Centuari were shown to be strong enough to attack the Earth take on Earthforce in The Lost Tales.

      Yes they could do fantastic CGI shots now in 4K but why? Who would buy the series? how would WB make money on it?
      Redoing CGI for Star Trek TNG 4K cost millions, apparently the sales were very lackluster and this cause Paramount to abandon any future 4K upscaling and refreshes of all the other ST franchise series like DS9, Voy, Ent.
